Abstract

Many language learners, even language teachers, consider two words are synonymous. In fact, some words are not really synonymous. This sometimes triggers questions among language learners. They are confused whether two considered-synonymous words can be used interchangebly in certain contexts. Their confusion will appear more when they should describe something. Therefore, this study tries to find out phenomena around two words which are considered synonymous, namely rich and wealthy. Using British National Corpus (BNC) as the data which were analysed using the software Sketch Engine (SkE), this corpus linguistics based study found out that rich and wealthy are near-synonyms because they have identical sense but they are not substitutable for certain contexts. In addition, rich is more commonly used by people to describe both human and non-human beings. The results of the study imply that corpus linguistics provide benefits for English language teaching as we can really analyse language using authentic facts compiled in a corpus. A language teacher can also use corpus linguistics to teach vocabulary. In addition, a sociolinguistics phenomenon found out in this study implies that investigating two considered-synonymous adjectives can help language learners understand how people use the adjectives in socialising with other people. Abstract

Spiritual care is an important component in providing holistic nursing care to both individuals and families. Therefore, nurses need to have knowledge and skills to recognize and address patients’ spiritual needs. Unfortunately, the spiritual aspect in health care is often neglected. Spiritual care in health care has started to be taught in nursing schools, specifically in Universitas Pelita Harapan, in which spiritual care is one of the core subjects that is taught by a faculty member who went through a training in spiritual care. Realizing that spiritual care is not necessarily included in nursing curricula in most nursing institutions in Indonesia, a webinar on spiritual care was conducted, especially in the context of palliative care. The purpose of this Community Service is to inform spiritual care in the context of palliative care to nursing students throughout Indonesia. The webinar was held on August 7, 2020 which was attended by 202 participants from various regions in Indonesia. The method used was lecture and question and answer. Evaluation was done by giving pre- and post-tests to participants. Participants’ feedback was obtained at the end of the webinar. The implementation of this webinar was proven to provide additional knowledge to nursing students who participated, indicated by an increase in the average pre-test and post-test scores by 21 points. BAHASA INDONESIA ABSTRACT: Asuhan spiritual merupakan komponen penting di dalam pemberian asuhan keperawatan yang holistik baik kepada individu maupun keluarga. Abstract

This study explores how essay writing material integrating task-based approach and Global Englishes (GE) in English Language Teaching (ELT). Native-speaker norms and prescriptive standards are often emphasized in traditional writing pedagogy especially in higher education contexts, neglecting learners’ multilingual repertoires and the role of English as a global lingua franca. Due to this gap, Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) framework was used to design materials to scaffold academic writing skills and to justify students’ multilingual repertoires. Employing a qualitative case study, this study shows how TBLT and diverse English varieties can be integrated into essay writing tasks using data from needs analysis, classroom observations, and student feedback. This study involved our lecturers and fifty-three undergraduate students in an essay writing course, who share similar backgrounds and regularly use multiple languages. The findings show that (1) students participated more actively in writing tasks, (2) they demonstrated greater critical awareness of multilingual English use in their reflections and essays, and (3) they expressed increased confidence in using their own linguistic resources. The module also addresses the limitations of monolingual writing conventions in the Indonesian higher education context. Overall, the study shows that TBLT is an effective approach for integrating GE into writing classrooms. Aligning academic pedagogy with the sociolinguistic diversities of GE was the implication for material developers, teachers, and institutions.

Abstract

For some people, speaking a foreign language might be exceptionally difficult. Some individuals have a natural aptitude for smooth communication, whereas others face challenges in acquiring this skill. The factors that contribute to individuals speaking a foreign language proficiently came under scrutiny. The objective of this research was to examine the attributions that nursing students had for their improvement in English-speaking skills. Attribution alone pertains to the justifications and rationales individuals offer for their advancement, accomplishment, or even lack thereof in a specific area, such as language acquisition. The study included a total of 38 nursing students from the Faculty of Nursing at Universitas Pelita Harapan in Indonesia. Data collection involved the utilization of open-ended questionnaires and interviews as the primary instruments. The participants were instructed to offer written responses to three items on the questionnaire. Additionally, during the interview phase, the researcher engaged nine participants to elaborate on their written responses from the questionnaire. The data analysis indicated that the primary factors contributing to the improvement of nursing students' English-speaking skills were the importance of doing speaking activities, internal motivation, and amicable learning environment.
