Abstract

The use of vegetation stratification is closely related to the availability of food sources in that stratification, so that bird activity in utilizing existing habitat space can change, depending on the appearance of the habitat that provides food and other activity needs, such as for perching, nesting, monitoring prey, shelter, and rest. Habitat use can be described vertically which includes four levels, namely the ground surface and undergrowth (E), shrubs and bushes (D), lower canopy (C), middle canopy (B), and upper canopy (A). This research aims to analyze the abundance of bird species and their relationship in utilizing vertical strata of vegetation by bird species on coffee-based agroforestry land. The research was conducted on coffee-based agroforestry land in Penantian and Sinar Villages, Banten. The coffee-based agroforestry land is in the community forest area (Hkm), utilization block, KPHL Batutegi. Data collection was carried out using the point count method. The results obtained were analyzed quantitatively using the species abundance index and the vertical utilization of the canopy was analyzed descriptively. The research results showed that Penantian Village had 11 bird species from 11 families with a total of 82 individuals and Sinar Banten Village had 12 bird species from 11 families with a total of 87 individuals. The highest species abundance index in Penantian Village is the cucak kutilang (Pycnonotus aurigaster) and the cow swift (Collocalia esculenta) at 39% each. The highest abundance index in Sinar Banten Village is the kutilang cucak (Pycnonotus aurigaster) and cow swallow (Collocalia esculenta) with values of 39% and 34%. This shows that the cucak kutilang and the cow swallow are the birds most often found in the two villages. The vertical strata of vegetation used by various types of birds are canopy stratum C (4-20 m), D (1-4 m) and E (0-1 M), while canopy stratum A (30 m) and B (20-30 m) not found. This describes the condition of the vertical strata of vegetation in coffee-based agroforestry in the two villages which provides food sources, cover for shelter or nesting, and supports other activities only in these three strata.Key words: Agroforestry based-coffee, birds, species abundance, KPHL Batutegi, vertical strata of vegetation.

Abstract

Monitoring, managing, and maintaining conservation areas are challenges faced by various parties. The Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool (SMART) is an application used to measure, collect, evaluate, and improve the effectiveness of location-based monitoring and conservation activities and has been implemented at the Pemerihan Resort, Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park (TNBBS). Based on the SMART application, the research aims to analyze the findings of threats and wildlife on active patrol routes. The methods used are documentary studies and field observations. The data obtained from the documentary study is in the form of data from forest patrols for two years (2020-2022), then processed, classified, and analyzed into data on threat findings and wild animal encounter data directly or through signs of presence, which is then verified through field observations. The research results show that the data found from the SMART application during four patrol periods from 2020-2022 consisted of 143 threat findings and 841 wild animal encounters. The highest threat finding was animal hunting, with 56 findings (39%), and the lowest was logging, with three findings (2%). Twenty-three wild animal encounters were found directly or through signs of presence such as tracks, feces, scratches, and food remain. The highest wildlife encounter was the sambar deer (Rusa unicolor). The high threat findings indicate much human activity in the Pemerihan Resort Area, TNBBS, which can disturb wildlife and its habitats.

Abstract

Sengon (Paraserianthes falcataria) wood is used for various purposes, including furniture, plywood, pallets, and building materials. Consumer demand for decorative wood is increasing, so innovation is needed to make it more productive and efficient. A laser cutting machine is one of the alternatives to answer this problem. Because CO2 gas wavelength and energy density offer the highest cutting quality, CO2 lasers are appropriate for wood processing. This study aims to determine the effect of laser power intensity and cutting speed on cutting plywood to get the best results. The plywood used has a thickness of 12 mm. The laser intensities used were 30 Watt, 35 Watt, 40 Watt, 45 Watt, and 50 Watt with cutting speeds of 2 mm/s, 4 mm/s, 6 mm/s, and 8 mm/s, with nozzle standoff distance set to 10 mm. In each repetition on the same sheet determine the comparison or variation of each variable used. Based on the measurement results, the highest width was obtained at 50 Watt power and 2 mm/s speed, and the lowest at 35 Watt power and 8 mm/s. The highest depth was 50 Watt and 2 mm/s, and the lowest was 30 Watts and 4 mm/s. The overall color change (∆E*) increased with increasing laser power. The higher the laser power, the more the color change increases. The change in ∆E* decreased as the laser speed increased. The optimization of cutting sengon plywood with CO2 laser using RSM method resulted in an optimum combination at 40 Watt laser power and 8 mm/s speed with a desirability value of 0.623

Abstract

Birds play a significant ecological role and are also attractive for birdwatching tourism (avitourism), particularly in mangrove ecosystems which provide habitat and food sources. Exploring the avian diversity in the Cuku NyiNyi Mangrove Ecotourism Area for avitourism development can be a conservation effort for birds and provide economic incentives for local communities. This study aimed to identify bird species as potential attractions for avitourism in the Cuku NyiNyi Mangrove Ecotourism Area. Data analysis involved determining the conservation status and criteria of birds as potential objects and attractions for avitourism. A total of 32 bird species from 19 families were identified with a total of 113 individuals. Several bird species have conservation statuses that require attention, namely the cinnamon-headed green pigeon (Treron fulvicollis) which is categorized as vulnerable (VU) and the brahminy kite (Haliastur indus), crested serpent eagle (Spilornis cheela), racket-tailed treepie (Crypsirina temia), and malaysian pied fantail (Rhipidura javanica) which are protected species. The analysis showed that 18 bird species have the potential to be objects and attractions for avitourism based on criteria such as raptors, protected species, songbirds, endemic birds, and colorful birds. The avian diversity in the Cuku NyiNyi Mangrove Ecotourism Area supports the potential for avitourism to develop as a form of sustainable tourism for the protection of bird species while attracting tourists, especially birdwatchers.

Abstract

The sustainability of forest functions is closely related to the perspective of the communities living around it. This study aims to analyze community perspectives on forest conditions in KTH Talang Ponijan and Sidodadi I. Data was collected using a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation studies. The collected data were analyzed descriptively and qualitatively. The results of the research show that there are still differences between the community's views and their behavior towards community forest management (HKm). Most people in KTH Talang Ponijan and Sidodadi I utilize HKm land to improve their welfare. However, conditions in the field reveal that illegal practices such as logging, poaching, opening up new land for cultivation, and unsustainable land management threaten the balance of nature and worsen forest conditions. The government is expected to provide environmental education programs and facilitate training or guidance to strengthen the community's capacity to manage and utilize forests wisely.

Abstract

Peatlands are vulnerable to fire, causing ecological damage that threatens biodiversity, one of which is amphibians. The nature of amphibians which are sensitive to environmental changes can be used as a bioindicator of the quality of a disturbed environment, including in buffer villages around conservation areas. This research aims to analyze the diversity of amphibians and their relationship with temperature and air humidity. The method used is Visual Encounter Survey (VES) in two types of habitats, namely oil palm plantations and swamps. Data analysis used the Shannon-Wiener species diversity index, the Pielou species evenness index, and the Pearson correlation test. The research results found 6 species of amphibians, namely Hylarana erythraea, Hylarana nicobariensis, Fejervarya limnocharis, Fejervarya cancrivora, Duttaphrynus melanustictus, and Hylarana baramica. The diversity index (H') in oil palm plantations and swamps is H'=1.46 and H'=1.10 in the medium category. This shows that ecologically, the conditions of the habitat types of oil palm plantations and swamps in the buffer villages around the Orang Kayo Hitam Forest Park after land burning can support amphibian life. Key words: Amphibians, conservation area, diversity, tropical peatland.
