Abstract

Indonesia has the second largest peatland area in the world, of which 19% is damaged due partly to forest fires and encroachment. The Orang Kayo Hitam (OKH) forest park located in the Indonesian province of Jambi is one among several peat forests in the country that remain largely intake. But as do other forested areas, the park faces severe encroachment threats. Multistakeholder partnership as stipulated by Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 17 offers a reasonable strategy to mitigate the threats. This article studies the driving and restraining factors, both externally and internally, that affect preservation of the park’s peatland as well as the development of effective partnership strategies. Results of the force field analysis show that community’s knowledge and awareness about the link between the park’s ecological and economic functions are the strongest internal driving factors, while lack of them are the strongest restraining ones. Availability of endemic species and frequency of forest fires are the strongest external driving and restraining factors, respectively.

Abstract

Berbak and Sembilang National Parks are conservation areas that become habitats for various types of plants and animals, including birds. This stud ypurpose to find species diversity, species evenness, species richness, dominance, species abundance and bird conservation status in Simpang Village. Data collection was carried out using the point count method and transect as many as 3 points which were assumed to represent one ecosystem, namely swamp ecosystems, shrubs and water bodies. The results obtained were 36 types of birds from 22 families. The value of the diversity index in the type of swamp ecosystem of 2,295 and the water body of 2,940 is in the medium category and the shrub ecosystem of 3,754 is relatively high. The three types of ecosystems have a stable distribution of types ranging from 0.21 < E < 1, no species dominate, but have a varied wealth of species, namely in low swamp ecosystems, medium shrub ecosystems and high water body ecosystems. This is due to the existence of three different types of ecosystems in the village, so that each ecosystem has a diverse species composition. Thus, Simpang Village is still classified as having a well-maintained diversity of birds, but still has to make efforts to conserve birds so that the bird population does not decrease, one of which is through continuous counseling by involving parties to educate and increase public awareness in the conservation of birds and their habitats.

Abstract

Vegetation is essential for birds to fulfil their life requirements. Monoculture coffee plantations, coffee-based agroforestry systems, and forests in HKm Wana Jaya provide potential habitats for various animal species, including birds. This research assessed bird diversity, richness, evenness, species dominance, feeding guilds, and conservation status across these three land cover types. The point count method was employed for data collection. Data were quantitatively analysed using the Shannon-Wiener diversity index, the Margalef richness index, the Pielou evenness index, and the Simpson dominance index. The study recorded 35 bird species from 19 families comprising 167 individuals. Species diversity values across all three land cover types fell within the moderate category, with forest exhibiting the highest value (2.988), followed by coffee agroforestry (2.648) and monoculture coffee (2.035). The highest species richness was found in the forest (5.429) and the lowest in monoculture coffee (2.970). The highest species evenness was recorded in coffee agroforestry (0.935) and the lowest in monoculture coffee (0.849), while species dominance values across all three land cover types were categorised as low (0.061-0.172). Insectivorous birds dominated feeding guilds across all habitat types, revealing unexpected ecological resilience. Of the species recorded, 29 are classified as Least Concern, two as Vulnerable, four as Near Threatened, while 10 species are protected under national legislation, and three species are listed in CITES Appendix II. The findings suggest that while forests maintain the highest biodiversity value, coffee agroforestry systems can provide crucial supplementary bird conservation habitats in modified landscapes.

Abstract

Coffee agroforestry in protected forest areas has the potential to be operated as a nature tourism destination. The purpose of this study was to analyze the feasibility of coffee agroforestry in the KPHL Batutegi area as a nature tourism area. Data collection was conducted by field observation and interviews using questionnaires. Data analysis was carried out using a modification of the Directorate General of Nature Tourism Object Operations (ADO-ODTWA) guidelines in 2003. The results showed that the potential of coffee agroforestry in KPHL Batutegi bordering Penantian Village and Sinar Banten Village has a medium potential value index. This means that the coffee agroforestry area in KPHL Batutegi has criteria that are not yet feasible to develop, because the element of accessibility (infrastructure), especially in the type of road taken with poor road conditions, makes it difficult to access the coffee agroforestry area. Tourism objects in the medium classification can be developed because a lot of planning is needed in structuring a good area in the future.

Abstract

The presence of birds can indicate whether the environment supports the life of an organism or not because it has a reciprocal and interdependent relationship with its environment. The diversity and abundance of bird species can indicate how the area is doing. This study aimed to determine birds' diversity, richness, evenness, dominance, feeding groups, and conservation status in the Simpang Rusa Ecosystem Recovery Area (SRERA). Data collection was done by direct observation in the field using the point count method. A total of 47 bird species from 24 families with a species diversity value (H') of 3.11 in the high category, species richness value (R) 7.62, species evenness value (E) of 0.8 in the good category, and species dominance (C) of 0.07 in the low category. 6 feeding groups were identified, namely insect eaters (53%), fruit eaters (18%), animal material eaters (12%), fish eaters (7%), seed eaters (6%) and nectar eaters (3%). Four protected bird species were found, namely Elanus caeruleus and Spilornis cheela, Gorsachius melanolophus and Rhipidura javanica. Based on the IUCN Redlist, there are two bird species with Near Treatened status, namely the Phaenicophaeus diardi and Cyornis turcosus, one species with Vulnerable status, namely the Acridotheres javanicus, and 42 other species with Least Concern status. Based on CITES, two bird species have Appendix II status. Annual monitoring is needed to monitor the population and mitigate threats as a conservation effort.

Abstract

Urban forest is one form of green open space. Urban forests play an important role in maintaining the sustainability of ecological functions in a city. This role could only run optimally with the availability of urban forests. The purpose of this study is to analyze the status of land ownership and analyze the efforts that can be made in maintaining urban forests. This study used image analysis, interviews, and field observations. From the results of this study, the status of urban forests based on the Mayor of Bandar Lampung Decree in 2010 had different statuses at each location. The urban forest ownership does not exclusively belong to the government. Of the 5 locations, only 1 location owned by the Bandar Lampung City Government, with 1 location that is not recognized (problematic), 1 location did not have a certificate of rights yet, and 2 other locations were private locations. The best effort that could be made to maintain the existence of urban forests is to control urban forest land as ownership in the name of the City Government with the support of certain regulations that can be done. Abstract

This study aims to determine the conflict mitigation efforts that have been carried out and analyze strategies for managing human-elephant conflicts in the Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park. The research data was collected by focus group discussion and observation. The collected data were analyzed descriptively based on the factors of strength, weakness, opportunity and threat analysis to determine the strategy for managing human-elephant conflict. The results of the study indicate that several efforts have been made to reduce the incidence of conflict through patrols, monitoring, and dispelling and escorting using firecrackers. The strategy supports an aggressive growth policy (growth oriented strategy). It is hoped that the incidence of human-elephant conflict can be reduced or suppressed through a holistic and integrative approach. Mitigation of human conflict with elephants that can be done in the long term is by making special interest tourism programs and increasing human resource capacity.
