Abstract

Communicative language teaching (CLT) is a set of principles about the goals of language teaching, how learners learn a language, the kinds of classroom activities that best facilitate learning, and the roles of teachers and learners in the classroom (Richard, 2006:2). Classroom interaction occurs in the process of applying CLT which requires the participation of both learners and teacher. The study aims at finding out how CLT and classroom interaction implemented collaboratively in the effort to increase learners speaking skill at private senior high schools in Ruteng, Flores. Its mixed method research combining the use of descriptive quantitative and qualitative study design with phenomenological approach. For the purpose of quantitative study, its chosen 123 students by using cluster random sampling, meanwhile for the purpose of qualitative data, its chosen 12 students and three English teachers by using purposive sampling. The research result showed that CLT characteristics (82=66.7%) and teachers role (98=79.7%) were mostly categorized as high level of CLT implementation. Meanwhile, material, media and learners role were mostly categorized as medium level. English teachers always involve their students in the productive activities. However, they mostly used book or hand out as the media to deliver materials. Integrating technology into classroom, using games as one of method to cheer up the students boredom hardly ever undertaken. Regarding the implementation of classroom interaction; initiation was mostly in the category of low level (76=61.8%). Students mostly do the activities of learning English designed by teacher. They are not engaged with learning autonomy that leads them to have self learning habit. Consequently, students are only able to accomplish the simple tasks

Abstract

This community service (PkM) activity was carried out at SMPN 6 Langke Rembong, Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, with a focus on the application of storytelling techniques to improve the English speaking skills of grade VIII students. This activity was designed as a response to the low self-confidence and involvement of students in speaking English in class. A total of 21 students were involved in this program which lasted for three learning sessions. Various methods were used, such as interactive presentations, storytelling practice, language games, small group discussions, and joint reflection. Storytelling was chosen because it was able to present a pleasant learning atmosphere, bring language closer to students' experiences, and foster their courage to appear and speak. The results of the activity showed that students were more confident, active in using new vocabulary, and enjoyed the learning process as a whole. In addition, this activity also showed that learning strategies that touch on students' affective aspects can have a significant impact on improving their language skills.

Abstract

This study aims to explore students’ perceptions of corrective feedback (CF) in EFL speaking activities and how it contributes to the development of their speaking skills. While many previous studies have focused on teachers’ perspectives and feedback strategies, this research emphasizes the students’ point of view to understand their preferences, emotional responses, and perceived benefits regarding CF. The study employed a quantitative descriptive method using a questionnaire distributed to EFL students. The data were analysed to identify patterns in students’ attitudes toward various types and timings of feedback. The findings reveal that students generally have a positive perception of corrective feedback. Most respondents agreed that CF helps them improve their speaking performance, particularly in areas such as vocabulary, pronunciation, and fluency. Contrary to common concerns among educators, the majority of students did not feel embarrassed or demotivated when corrected. Instead, they reported increased confidence and motivation when their errors were addressed constructively. Furthermore, students expressed a preference for both immediate and delayed feedback, indicating flexibility and awareness of different instructional strategies. The study suggests that corrective feedback plays a significant role in supporting learners’ speaking development. It also highlights the importance of incorporating student perspectives when designing effective feedback practices in EFL classrooms.

Abstract

In order to understand the structure, procedure, and causative marking of the Dawan language, this paper addresses causative construction in the Dawan language. Since the writer is a native speaker of the language, the primary data from the field study was corroborated by written materials like the bible in the Dawan language as well as by intuitive data. The elicitation technique combined the two sets of data to obtain valid data. The outcome demonstrates four distinct forms of causative construction: affixation, complex sentences, verb serialisation, and the addition of a causer argument. The transitive form, derived from an intransitive clause, adds the causer argument. S is transferred to the O function, and a causer argument is added to the A function. The conjunction natuin or fun indicates causative marking in a complex sentence. This study considers the Dawan language's causative verb serialisation the most fruitful construction. There are two types of this construction: causative serialisation and cause-effect serialisation. In the first type, V1 is an action verb with the lexical meaning "causative," V2 is the outcome (effect) of what V1 has done. In contrast to the first, the causative verbs moe/mo'e "make" and eik "bring" occupy V1 in causative serialisation, while the outcome of the action in V1 occupies V2. The final method is causative construction by affixation, or the morphological process.

Abstract

Despite the growing recognition of interactive and game-based learning in language education, limited research has explored how collaborative teaching strategies can effectively enhance elementary students’ motivation, confidence, and language learning in rural Indonesian contexts. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of interactive and game-based English learning through collaborative teaching strategies in enhancing elementary students’ motivation, confidence, and language acquisition. The study was conducted at SDK Ri’I, Cibal Distric, Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Using a case qualitative study approach, data were collected through classroom observations, student interviews, and teacher reflections. The participants of the study were one teacher and 25 students who involved in the teaching and learning process. The participants were taken purposively based on predetermine criteria. The findings revealed that the integration of games and interactive activities through collaborative teaching strategy increased student engagement, fostered a supportive learning environment, and improved vocabulary comprehension and pronunciation. Students showed enthusiasm, active participation, and a strong sense of collaboration during group-based tasks. However, challenges such as varying proficiency levels, fluctuating attention spans, and the need for diverse game types were also identified. Despite these challenges, the approach proved successful in promoting both cognitive and affective development. The study highlighted well-designed interactive strategies to make learning enjoyable and support holistic language development. Thus, it’s essential to integrate interactive and game-based methods through collaborative teaching strategy in English language instruction at the elementary level.

Abstract

Abstract

Ritual language in Manggarai holds profound cultural-ecological significance, as it encodes collective values, environmental wisdom, and human–nature interdependence. Yet, despite eco-linguistic concerns over how language shapes and reflects ecological relationships, the lexicons of Teing Hang Woja have not previously been examined through this perspective. This study aims to describe the ideology and meaning of lexicons used in the ritual text of the teing hang woja in the speech Community of Manggarai, Flores Indonesia. This study also aims to describe the shift in the lexicons in the text as a result of changes in people's social activities. This is qualitative research with a phenomenological approach. Data were collected through interviews, participative observation, and Focus Group Discussion. Ten key informants were selected for interviews and FGD needs with several criteria. The results showed that the lexicons in the ritual text of teing hang woja contained the ideology of asking for an abundance of water, smoothness, and success of the agricultural process which were closely related to the socio-cultural conditions of the people as farmers. However, along with the social development of the community, the ideology contained in the text then expanded to other aspects such as the pleading for the success of the livestock business, education, and public health of the speakers. Meanwhile, the meaning contained in the text is more about stylistic meaning, affective meaning, social and reflective or spiritual meaning. The lexical analysis in Teing Hang Woja text not only provides insights into Manggarai's cultural ecology but also enriches eco-linguistic studies, emphasizing the importance of understanding language in efforts to safeguard ecological sustainability.

Abstract

This study aims to explore types of directive speech acts used in nurse-patient communication and understand why particular speech acts are used within this context. The research was carried out at Nursing Department, Universitas Katolik Indonesian Santu Paulus Ruteng, Flores. The study involved 20 participants, 18 nursing students with hospital internship experience and two nursing lecturers. Data were collected through interviews, focus group discussions (FGDs), and documents, then analysed using the interactive model by Miles et al. (2014). The results show that requesting speech acts are typically delivered in indirect and polite forms to maintain respect and patient autonomy. Recommending and advising speech acts are employed to encourage patients and families to make informed decisions regarding treatment and health behavior. These speech acts are crucial in fostering cooperation without imposing authority. It aligns with the principles of patient-centered care. Meanwhile, directing speech acts are used for both clinical instructions and logistical guidance within the hospital. It aims to show clarity and precision as an essential aspect for safety and efficiency. The study highlights that nurses tend to avoid direct commanding speech acts, opting instead for more polite and empathetic expressions. This approach supports the psychological comfort of patients while achieving effective communication. The appropriate and polite use of directive speech acts is essential in achieving successful health outcomes and enhancing the quality of nursing communication.

Abstract

Studies of cultural narratives as indirect speech acts and persuasive strategies in health promotion remain limited. This study aims to discover how "Go’et," a cultural narrative of Manggarai Community Indonesia, is used as an indirect speech act and persuasive strategy in health promotion. It is a qualitative study with a phenomenological approach. The study was conducted in the Rego dialect community, Manggarai, Indonesia. The study participants were chosen purposively based on predetermined criteria. The participants included healthcare providers, customary leaders, and community figures. Data from the study were collected using in-depth interviews, observation, documentation and Focus Group Discussion. The study indicated that the cultural narratives of Go’et in the Manggarai community in Indonesia are relevant to the context of health promotion. The cultural narratives are constructed in imperative sentences with the illocutionary power of advising, recommending and hoping. Using indirect speech acts through "Go’et" has become a persuasive strategy for shaping people's perceptions, beliefs and behavior.  Healthcare providers can adopt such expressions to positively influence patients' emotional states, enhancing their psychological readiness to recover or maintain good health. The study contributes to understanding how cultural narratives function as indirect speech acts in non-Western communities, particularly within the Manggarai context of Indonesia. By highlighting Go’et as a culturally embedded form of communication, the study expands the theoretical discourse on indirectness, politeness strategies, and persuasive communication in health promotion. Moreover, the study provides valuable insights into community-based health promotion strategies by emphasizing the compelling role of traditional discourse.
