Abstract

The aims of this research are to find out the types and meaning of metaphor in poetry in English textbook entitled “Pathway to English”. The main data of this research are 9 poetry in the English textbook entitled “The Seasons”, “The Little Rose Tree”, “Alpine Glow”, “From Alcuin”, “A Man Young and Old: Human Dignity”, “Love and Friendship”, “Mountain”, “My Star”, and “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud”. In this research the researcher applied descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data. The researcher used theory of Parera to classify the types of metaphor and also used the metaphor identification procedure proposed by Pragglejaz to identify the metaphors contained in the poetry. The result showed that there are 22 lines that used metaphor, which 16 lines are anthropomorphic metaphor, 3 lines are synesthetic metaphor, 2 lines are metaphor abstract to concrete and 1 line is animal metaphor. The meaning of all these poetry is about life. By using metaphor the poet can also express their feelings to the reader to understand the implicit message contained in the poetry through the depiction or comparison made by the poet.

Abstract

The use of website in learning Foreign Language helps the students feel comfortable to speak. The objectives of the research is to investigate the Indonesian students’ self-rated degrees of their foreign language speaking anxiety (FLSA) and the effect of using language exchange website in online learning in overcoming the students’ FLSA. This study examined 100 undergraduate students of 4th and 6th semester majoring English education. Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) by Horwitz, Horwitz & Cope (1986) was adapted and distributed twice in the beginning of the class to find the state of speaking anxiety and in the end to see whether there is any significance effect after learning speaking by using a language exchange website. Finally, the six participants were chosen for interview. The interview was conducted to get more data about the foreign language speaking anxiety that they feel. It is found that the number of students who felt anxiety decreases after using language exchange website. Keywords:  Foreign Language, Speaking Anxiety, Language Exchange Website

Abstract

Character education is closely related to moral education, which is to shape and train individual abilities continuously for self-improvement towards a better life. Novel is a literary work that can convey the values of character education. The research aims to analyzing the values of character education in the novel 5 cm by Donny dhirgantoro. This research is a qualitative study using a descriptive design method. the data analysis technique by reading the entire data, analyzing the data in more detail and restating the data by described and interpreting the data. The result of this study are the value of character education  contained in the novel “ 5 cm” by Donny Dhirgantoro, namely, religious, hard work, love to read, friendly and communicative, social care,  and love  the homeland.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan faktor-faktor minimnya partisipasi umat Katolik untuk mengaku dosa, tindak tutur direktif Imam dan penerapan penitensi umat Katolik. Permasalahan penelitian didasarkan atas wawancara kepada 2 (dua) Imam yang mengtakan bahwa hanya 2,05 % dari 24.444 jiwa umat Katolik yang melakukan pengakuan dosa. Subyek penelitian terdiri atas 12 orang Imam dan 25 orang umat Katolik yang dipilih secara purposive sampling. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan googleform berisikan pertanyaan yang dijawab oleh Imam dan umat. Pendekatan teori menggunakan pendekatan pragmatik sedangkan pendekatan penelitian menggunakan kualitatif deskriptif dan analisis data dengan cara mereduksi, menyajikan data serta menarik kesimpulan. Untuk mengukur keabsahan data menggunakan teknik trianggulasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan faktor minimnya pengakuan dosa yaitu umat belum memahami pengakuan dosa, dianggap pengakuan dosa tidak terjamin kerahasisaannya, umat malu dan takut mengaku dosa. Tindak tutur direktif Imam kepada umat Katolik terdiri atas tindak tutur bersifat meminta, mengajak, menyarankan, menyuruh dan mengharapkan. Intinya agar umat mengaku dosa kepada Imam. Umat Katolik menerapkan penitensi dalam bentuk doa, derma, karya amal dan pelayanan kepada sesama, pantang secara suka rela dan berkorban. Akhirnya, baik imam dan umat merekomendasikan agar diadakan program katekese tentang pengakuan dosa demi peningkatan partisipasi aktif umat dalam mengaku dosa baik secara kuantitas dan kualitas. Abstract

The lack of new reading material is one of the factors reducing students' interestin reading. This makes this research focus on adding reading material withdescriptive text by raising an object that is rarely exposed. Abstract

Background. Teaching English to EFL learners is a challenging task. However, most English pre-service teachers fail to meet the challenge during their teaching practicum. Therefore, it is essential for the pre-service teacher to know the challenge they may face in teaching practicum. It can help the pre-service teacher prepare themselves for teaching in a classroom. Purpose. This study aims to investigate the challenges faced by English pre-service teachers. It focused on the factor that could be a challenge that bothered the pre-service performance in their teaching practicum. The internal and external factors were also discussed. Method. Three participants participated in this research from different universities. Three of them were doing teaching practicum in the same school. Diaries and mentor feedback were used to collect the data. Results. The findings exposed that there were internal and external challenging factors in teaching. The external challenging factors were the student’s motivation and the lack of facilities. The internal ones were classroom management and teacher proficiency. Conclusion. This research contributed to the instructional practices for EFL pre-service teachers. By knowing the challenges, EFL teachers can overcome them before teaching.

Abstract

Pelatihan peningkatan kompetensi guru dalam penggunaan Canva untuk pembelajaran berdiferensiasi di SMP Swasta Primbana Medan bertujuan untuk memperkuat keterampilan guru dalam memanfaatkan teknologi untuk mendukung implementasi Kurikulum Merdeka. Kegiatan ini berangkat dari kebutuhan untuk meningkatkan kualitas materi pembelajaran dan keterlibatan siswa melalui penggunaan alat digital yang inovatif. Pelatihan ini melibatkan sesi teori dan praktik yang dirancang untuk mengenalkan fitur Canva dan aplikasinya dalam pembuatan materi ajar yang visual dan interaktif. Metodologi yang digunakan dalam pelatihan ini mencakup pendekatan kualitatif dan kuantitatif. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara, kuesioner, observasi, dan analisis dokumen untuk menilai peningkatan keterampilan guru dan kualitas materi pembelajaran yang dihasilkan. Hasil dari pelatihan menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan dalam keterampilan guru dalam menggunakan Canva, yang berdampak positif pada kualitas materi pembelajaran. Guru-guru di SMP Swasta Primbana Medan kini dapat menciptakan materi yang lebih menarik dan sesuai dengan kebutuhan siswa, yang pada gilirannya meningkatkan keterlibatan dan motivasi siswa. Pelatihan ini juga berhasil membentuk komunitas belajar di kalangan guru, di mana mereka saling berbagi pengetahuan dan pengalaman dalam penggunaan Canva. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa integrasi teknologi seperti Canva dapat mendukung pembelajaran berdiferensiasi dan pelaksanaan Kurikulum Merdeka dengan lebih efektif. Rencana tindak lanjut meliputi pendampingan berkelanjutan dan pengembangan modul pelatihan tambahan untuk memperkuat kemampuan guru dalam memanfaatkan teknologi pendidikan.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of case-based learning (CBL) on enhancing collaboration and communication skills among early childhood education (ECE) students. A meta-analysis was conducted using 25 effect sizes from studies published between 2022 and 2024, involving 1,056 participants and sourced from databases such as ERIC, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and Wiley. The JSAP application facilitated statistical analysis. Results indicate that CBL significantly outperforms conventional learning methods in fostering collaboration and communication, evidenced by a high summary effect size of 1.013. CBL offers an interactive, student-centered approach that places students in real-life scenarios, encouraging active participation, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. Through intensive group discussions and collaborative activities, students learn to articulate ideas, respect diverse perspectives, and engage constructively in group settings. These findings underscore CBL’s potential as an effective pedagogical approach for developing essential interpersonal skills in ECE, which are critical for students' professional preparedness. Future studies should consider longitudinal impacts and cross-cultural contexts to validate these outcomes further.

Abstract

Hasil pengabdian ini menggambarkan peran Duolingo sebagai alat pedagogis digital dalam mendorong pengembangan kosakata bahasa Inggris pada siswa Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan (SMK). Duolingo, sebagai aplikasi pembelajaran interaktif, memberikan akses ke modul pembelajaran yang beragam dan relevan dengan konteks industri, memungkinkan siswa mengasah keterampilan kosakata secara praktis. Interaktivitas aplikasi ini memperkaya pengalaman pembelajaran melalui latihan interaktif dan permainan kuis, menjadikan proses pembelajaran lebih menarik dan efektif. Keunggulan Duolingo terletak pada fleksibilitasnya, memungkinkan siswa SMK mengaksesnya kapan saja dan di mana saja, memberikan ruang untuk pembelajaran mandiri. Aplikasi ini juga memberikan umpan balik instan kepada guru, memungkinkan pemantauan kemajuan siswa dengan lebih efisien. Dengan pendekatan personalisasi, guru dapat menyesuaikan metode pengajaran sesuai dengan kebutuhan individu siswa. Secara keseluruhan, Duolingo bukan hanya sebuah alat pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, tetapi juga mitra strategis dalam mendukung pengembangan kosakata bahasa Inggris pada siswa SMK. Dengan inovasi, interaktivitas, dan fleksibilitasnya, Duolingo membawa pembelajaran bahasa Inggris ke tingkat yang lebih tinggi, membantu siswa SMK membangun keterampilan bahasa yang esensial untuk kesuksesan di dunia kerja global.
