Abstract

Limited knowledge, shame and taboo when talking about sex in children causes parents to play a less active role in sex education. As a result, children have wrong perceptions, deviant sexual behavior and an increase in cases of sexual violence. The purpose of community service is to increase the understanding and ability of parents in providing sex education from an early age. The activity begins with the identification of the role and assessment of the understanding of the students' parents. The core activities are psychoeducation about sex development, sex education and prevention of sexual violence against children, assistance activities through simulation practice and roleplay to provide information on sex education. The results of the evaluation of cognitive aspects showed that the majority of participants' level of knowledge before psychoeducation was sufficient (75%) and after being given psychoeducation 75% of participants had good knowledge. The psychomotor aspect found that the majority of participants (75%) were able to provide information on sex education to their children directly and 25% were in the sufficient category. The conclusion is that there is an increase in the knowledge and ability of students' parents in providing sex education to their children. Keywords: the role of parents, sex education

Abstract

Background:  Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic disease with increasing prevalence in Indonesia, largely due to lifestyle changes. Blood glucose control in T2DM patients not only relies on pharmacological therapy but can also be supported by non-pharmacological interventions such as progressive muscle relaxation and lavender aromatherapy. These therapies are believed to lower blood glucose levels by reducing stress and promoting relaxation. Aims: To examine the effect of a combination of progressive muscle relaxation and lavender aromatherapy on blood glucose levels in T2DM patients. Method: A quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group approach was used. A total of 30 hospitalized T2DM patients at a hospital in Tasikmalaya were recruited through incidental sampling and divided equally into intervention and control groups. The intervention group received progressive muscle relaxation for 30 minutes and lavender aromatherapy for 5 minutes twice daily over three consecutive days. The control group received standard hospital care. Random blood glucose levels were measured before and after the intervention. Results: A significant reduction in the intervention group from 265.93 mg/dL with an SD of 41.24 to 220.40 mg/dL with an SD of 51.67 (p = 0.000), while the control group showed a non-significant decrease from 281.13 mg/dL with an SD of 45.55 to 268.87 mg/dL with an SD of 51.01 (p = 0.205). A significant difference was also observed between the two groups after the intervention (p = 0.015).  Conclusion:  the combination of progressive muscle relaxation and lavender aromatherapy was effective in lowering blood glucose levels in T2DM patients. It can be considered as a complementary non-pharmacological therapy in diabetes management.

Abstract

Background: Adolescent girls often have limited knowledge regarding dysmenorrhea management, partly due to the lack of engaging and comprehensible health education. Aims:  To determine the effect of animated video-based health education on the knowledge of dysmenorrhea management among female adolescents aged 13–15 years at SMPN 10 Tasikmalaya. Method: A quasi-experimental study with a one-group pretest-posttest design was conducted. A total of 55 seventh-grade female students were selected using simple random sampling. The intervention involved a 5–10minute animated educational video covering the definition, causes, symptoms, and management of dysmenorrhea. Data were collected using a 25-item validated and reliable knowledge questionnaire (Cronbach’s Alpha = 0.826) administered before and after the intervention. Results: The average knowledge score increased from 42.11 (pretest) to 86.55 (posttest). Statistical analysis using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test showed a significant difference in knowledge levels before and after the intervention (p = 0.000). Conclusion: Animated video-based health education is effective in improving adolescent girls' knowledge of dysmenorrhea management. It is recommended that animated videos be considered as an alternative medium for delivering reproductive health education in school settings.

Abstract

Background: Pneumonia is a lower respiratory tract infection that affects the alveoli and is characterized by cough, shortness of breath, and increased respiratory rate. It remains a global health concern, with approximately 9.2 million cases reported annually worldwide and 309,838 cases in Indonesia in 2018. Non-pharmacological interventions such as effective coughing techniques and peppermint aromatherapy may help alleviate clinical symptoms, particularly by reducing respiratory rate. Objective: This study aimed to determine the effect of implementing effective coughing techniques and peppermint aromatherapy on changes in respiratory rate among pneumonia patients. Method: This qualitative study used a case study approach conducted over three weeks, from April 8 to April 28, 2025. The intervention was applied for three consecutive days to two respondents, with daily monitoring of respiratory rate changes. Results: After the intervention, the first respondent’s respiratory rate decreased from 25 breaths per minute to 19 breaths per minute, while the second respondent’s rate decreased from 27 breaths per minute to 20 breaths per minute. Conclusion: The combination of effective coughing techniques and peppermint aromatherapy effectively reduced respiratory rate in pneumonia patients. This intervention can be applied independently as a supportive therapy to help improve respiratory function in patients with pneumonia.

Abstract

A decision-making tool for family planning flipchart is used for contraceptive counseling, but the use of this flipchart is suboptimal. In this study, primary study resulted in innovative decision-making tools for family planning applications. “Si KB Pintar” was also developed, a tool that women can use to discuss contraceptives with their husbands after family planning counseling. This study analyzed the effectiveness of family planning counseling during pregnancy by applying postpartum contraceptive use. Analytical quantitative quasi-experimental methods were used with a control group design. The sampling method was two-stage sampling. In the first stage, from 22 primary health care (PHC) in Cirebon City, Indonesia, 11 intervention and 11 control groups were selected using random allocation. Five participants were taken from each PHC in the second stage using simple random sampling. The findings indicated that participants given family planning counseling using an application had a 2.4 times higher likelihood of using postpartum contraception compared to flipcharts after controlling for age and parity variables. Because these applications are only for Android users, applications should be produced that all users can utilize in further study.

Abstract

Background: Stroke is a clinical sign in the form of disruption of brain function, which can cause symptoms including balance disorders including muscle weakness, processes in thinking, the brain's ability to store memory, fluency of speech, to loss of body balance. Research results of the Ministry of Health in 2018, the prevalence of stroke patients in Indonesia has increased by 10.9%. Of stroke patients, 80% experience weakness on one side of their body, which results in a lack of muscle contractions due to the cessation of blood supply to the brain. The impact of weakness experienced by stroke patients can cause imbalances and disrupt the ability to carry out daily activities. Conducting an Activities Daily Living (ADL) assessment is one form of measuring independence or functional ability. Aims: The purpose of research is to determine the level of independence of stroke patients in carrying out daily activities. Method: This research uses a qualitative design with a case study approach; the process is carried out for 2 weeks, from April 6, 2023, to April 19, 2023. The presentation of data on these two respondents used the Katz index instrument. Results: The level of independence of Respondent 1 is included in category F, which is dependent on bathing, dressing, going to the restroom, and defecating / bath. In contrast, respondent 2 is included in class G, namely total dependence, where patients cannot eat, continent, move places, go to the restroom, bathe, and dress independently. Conclusion: The case study results obtained the level of independence of the two respondents with the category of Total dependence.
