Abstract

Abstract

In Indonesia, children still have a high incidence of dental caries; among children aged 5 to 9 years, the rate was 92.6%, and among those aged 10 to 14 years, it was 73.4%. Risk factors that contribute to childhood caries include child behavior and dental care utilization, family dynamics, and environmental. The health of teeth and mouths can be achieved with good oral hygiene. Oral hygiene can be influenced by gender, age, parental education, and dental visits. The study aimed to determine the relationship between sociodemography and dental visits with dental caries and oral hygiene at public elementary school in West Jakarta. This research is a cross sectional observational analytic using a questionnaire involving 174 respondents and direct examination of the oral cavity to obtain dental caries and oral hygiene. The results show that the p-values for the association between dental caries and gender, age, father’s education, mother’s education, and dental visits are 0.924, 0.588, 0.222, 0.172, and 0.115, respectively, all of which are greater than the significance level of 0.05. Similarly, the p-values for the association between oral hygiene and gender, age, father’s education, mother’s education, and dental visits are 0.231, 0.068, 0.064, 0.509, and 0.427, respectively, all exceeding the significance level of 0.05. In conclusion, the dental caries status of students at Kapuk 03 Pagi Public Elementary School is low, and their oral hygiene status is good. There is no correlation between dental caries and oral hygiene with gender, age, father's education and mother's education, and dental visits.

Abstract

Background: Previous research studies have found the persistence of various COVID-19 symptoms even after the patient tested negative on a PCR test; this incident is now known as long COVID. These long COVID symptoms are reported to appear in the oral cavity including long COVID effects on periodontal disease, as both long COVID and periodontal disease release similar proinflammatory cytokines such as Acute phase proteins, CRP, TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-2, IL-6, and IFN-g. Purpose: This study aims to show periodontal-disease severity-frequency distribution in COVID-19 survivors with long COVID and in non-COVID-19 patients. Methods: Patients' secondary data in the Periodontics Clinic Faculty of Dentistry at Trisakti University Dental Hospital (n=40) consisted of 20 samples from COVID-19 survivors who experienced long COVID and 20 samples from the non-COVID-19 group selected according to the inclusion criteria. Afterward, the data was recapitulated and processed into a research report. Results: The distribution percentage of generalized gingivitis was highest in non-COVID-19 patients, while generalized periodontitis was highest in COVID-19 survivors with long COVID. Based on periodontitis staging and grading methods, it is not proven that long COVID increases the severity of the periodontitis. Conclusion: This research shows that the distribution of gingivitis in COVID-19 survivors with long COVID has not increased. Meanwhile, the distribution of general periodontitis increased in survivors with long COVID. However, there was no increased severity of periodontitis based on the staging and grading method of periodontitis in the COVID-19 survivors with long COVID.

Abstract

Social media has evolved into an important tool for dental practitioners to promote their services and attract patients, necessitating a careful balance between effective promotion and upholding ethical standards to maintain patient trust. This research delves into the challenges and implications associated with using social media in dentistry, emphasizing the ethical considerations, legal frameworks, and the potential impact on public understanding of oral and dental health. By providing a comprehensive discussion on the importance of ethical promotion in the dental profession, the study not only highlights the need for dental practitioners to prioritize ethical standards in their social media activities but also offers effective strategies for attracting patients. These strategies include delivering relevant and informative content, engaging with followers, demonstrating professionalism and expertise, obtaining informed consent, and respecting patient privacy. The research underscores that navigating these complexities is essential for dental practitioners to promote their services ethically, contributing to the success and growth of their practice while safeguarding the integrity of health information and fostering positive relationships with the public.
