Abstract

Population growth which is not supported with the availability of natural resources causes gaps or limitations in meeting daily needs through natural resources. As a result, rural communities need certain rules or norms used as behavioral guidelines in utilizing the natural resources. One of them is through the existence of kewang customary institution. However, as the community develops, its effectiveness is experiencing a decline. This study examines the role of kewang customary institution as a biosecurity strategy for community livelihood asset in Negeri Booi, Saparua Island, Central Maluku Regency. This study was done in a qualitative manner with a case study method. The key informants involved included members of the kewang, head (raja) of Negeri Booi, farmers and customary leaders. In-depth interviews, observation and focus group discussion (FGD) were used to collect the data. The results showed that the kewang of Negeri Booi played an active role in securing the livelihood asset while at the same time protecting Negeri Booi's territory. However, the inclusion of economic interventions left the kewang members vulnerable. They were faced with the choice to carry out their duties and functions as a local institution securing the livelihood asset or to violate the convention to meet their daily household needs. In general, the community in Negeri Booi still recognized the existence of kewang customary institution by respecting and carrying out every decision taken.

Abstract

This study aims to describe views on poverty through limited natural resources in the form of clean water scarcity and the coping strategies for the poor in overcoming it in rural areas on a small island. It took place in Rumeon Village, East Seram Regency, Maluku Province, Indonesia. This study was conducted using a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. In-depth interviews, observations and documentations were used to collect data. The data was analyzed by following the steps proposed by Moustakes, and the source triangulation method was used to examine the data validity. The results showed that community had been suffering from water scarcity for a long time and had received no assistance. Factors causing the water scarcity included seawater contamination on the water sources, climatic and environmental changes, and population growth. The community attempted to overcome the clean water scarcity by utilizing resources available to them as a coping strategy applied including water harvesting and the use of alternative water sources. In addition, as a result of the long-standing condition of clean water scarcity in Rumeon Village, the community had to utilize the social and cultural values as an effort to overcome it so as to reduce the high cost and not to cause conflicts among them.

Abstract

Women are always identified with only domestic work. In fact, women are a potential source of income for the sustainability of household livelihoods. Moreover, when compared to men, women have a greater level of tenacity, innovation and creativity than men. This condition is illustrated through the diversification activities of fish products which until now have only been consumed as is. The Community Service Team, Department of Development Economics, FEB, Pattimura University provides training and science and technology diffusion. The training was carried out by means of counseling regarding various diversification of products made from fish, while the science and technology diffusion was in the form of fish sauce products. The results of service activities show that fish products that are easily damaged and rotten can be given added economic value through diversification as well as being an alternative source of income for households in the form of fish sauce. Then, women in Mahia Hamlet have the desire to help their husbands earn additional income, but this desire is often hampered by various obstacles such as knowledge of product diversification and marketing.

Abstract

This study examines communities' efforts to address income distribution inequality by leveraging local wisdom mechanisms. Income inequality is observed at regional and national levels and manifests in gender disparities. This research aims to explore how local wisdom, particularly the practice of "picking nutmeg seeds," serves as a mechanism for mitigating income inequality experienced by women. This study seeks to understand women's income distribution behaviors through the lens of local wisdom. Data collection methods include in-depth interviews, participant observation, and focus group discussions (FGDs), while data analysis is conducted using thematic analysis to identify, analyze, and report emerging patterns. The findings reveal that the traditional practice of nutmeg collection functions as an informal insurance mechanism, ensuring the sustainability of household livelihoods, particularly for widowed women in the Negeri Booi-Samahu Amalatu Indigenous community. Furthermore, the research highlights the role of local institutions within the nutmeg farming community in fostering a system of shared prosperity rather than shared poverty. This collective well-being is achieved without the exploitation of community members, including women, particularly widows. Additionally, according to the Saemaul Undong principle, local wisdom strongly correlates with rural development and community empowerment. Through active participation, resource management, and self-reliance, local wisdom is a foundation for sustainable community development and equitable economic opportunities.

Abstract

The composition of regional products according to economic sectors may generally reveal a region’s economic structure, therefore the number of workers employed in the economic sector can be interpreted as an indicator of the economic sector’s workforce absorption potential. The purpose of this study is to identify and assess determinants of labor demand (open unemployment, Human Development Index (HDI), and minimum wage) in the islands, specifically Maluku Province which consists of 11 regencies / cities. This study employed a descriptive-quantitative method, employing a multiple linear regression analysis. The results show that the open unemployment, HDI, and minimum wage have a negative and insignificant impact on the labor demand in the islands. In fact, labor demand issues in the islands were more complex than in continental areas, such as regional egocentrism, which expected the “local community youth” to have priority in the labor demand yet they had no skill mastery. As a result, investing in education through “specialization” of labor was predicted to be critical to the labor absorption.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the causes and potential solutions to poverty traps experienced by coastal women. Utilizing a systematic literature review method, the research identifies and synthesizes relevant findings from existing studies. The results reveal that the primary drivers of poverty among coastal women include disparities in educational attainment and limited access to economic resources. These constraints, coupled with restricted employment opportunities, contribute to economic dependency on male family members. Such dependency heightens the risk of domestic violence and reinforces the intergenerational transmission of poverty. To address this issue, the study recommends promoting women’s economic empowerment through entrepreneurship training and improved access to financial capital, which may enhance income generation and reduce economic vulnerability.

Abstract

Empowering women through Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises by utilizing the availability of local resource potential can be an alternative source of income. Although MSMEs provide opportunities, women still face various limitations such as the ability to create new products, marketing and promotion. This community service activity aims to improve women's understanding and skills in developing businesses through the availability of local resources. The method used is Participatory Action Research (PAR) in the form of training and lectures. The PAR method allows for a sustainable and responsive process to the dynamics and needs of the community that are constantly changing. The implementation of the activity in the hall of the Cooperative Office, precisely in Namrole District, South Buru Regency on November 16, 2024, involving 21 female MSME actors from various types of businesses. The results show that the efforts made by women are not yet optimal. Where, the products produced are not yet diverse enough and their marketing is limited to the Namrole District area. The training provided has motivated women in developing their businesses in the form of increasing women's understanding in managing businesses by utilizing local resource potential.

Abstract

Women are often viewed solely as domestic workers responsible for taking care of household needs and requirements. Yet, women have the opportunity to find employment and earn income, thus ensuring the sustainability of household livelihoods. In a microeconomic context, income inequality exists between women and men in various countries, both developing and developed. This income inequality can be addressed by optimizing the local potential of each region through MSMEs. This reality is further complicated when faced with the geographical location of archipelagic regions that possess unique natural resource potential for development, yet many residents live below the poverty line. The solution to empowering women through MSMEs based on local potential involves fostering awareness of women's potential, strategies for overcoming inhibiting stereotypes, strategies for overcoming psychological barriers, and empowering women to run their businesses.

Abstract

Poverty remains a major, multidimensional and complex issue that impedes the government’s efforts to boost regional economic growth. This condition is further complicated by the islands’ geographical conditions, which are severely limited in terms of access to education, and transportation. This study examines the impact of Human Development Index (HDI), unemployment rate, and minimum wage on the poverty rate in 11 districts / cities in Maluku Province. This study was conducted using a quantitative-descriptive method, utilizing secondary (time series) data obtained from the BPS Maluku Province during the period of 2004-2022. The data was examined using multiple linear regression analysis. The findings indicate that the Human Development Index (HDI) exerts a partial, positive, and statistically significant influence on the poverty rate, as evidenced by a regression coefficient of 1.886081 and a significance value of 0.0008. Meanwhile, unemployment exhibits no statistically significant impact on the poverty rate, as indicated by a coefficient of 0.011252 and a probability value of 0.9139 (> 0.05). Conversely, the regional minimum wage has been observed to exert a negative and significant influence on the poverty rate, as evidenced by a negative coefficient of -0.395722 and a probability value of 0.0000 (< 0.05). However, the simultaneous estimation of all independent variables indicates a substantial impact on the dependent variable. The implications of this research suggest the necessity for government policies that prioritize island development through the equitable distribution of infrastructure, including education, training, healthcare, and transportation. It is anticipated that this approach will contribute to the reduction of poverty and the enhancement of welfare across the Maluku Province as islands.
