The results show that East Seram Regency has 4 basic sectors – including agricultural, forestry and fisheries; mining and quarrying; real estate; and health service and social activity – in addition to 13 non basic sectors. Meanwhile, the economic sectors which have the potential to grow faster and are specialized include the agriculture, forestry and fisheries; mining and quarrying; processing industry, electricity and gas supply; water supply, sewerage, waste and recycling management; construction; wholesale and retail trade, and car and motorcycle repairs; provision of accommodation and food and beverages; information and communication; financial and insurance service; real estate; corporate service; public administration, and defense and compulsory social security; education service; health service and social activity; and other services. Further, the differential shift components which are found to be positive and growing faster compared to the GRDP of Maluku Province consist of the agriculture, forestry and fisheries; wholesale and retail trade, and car and motorcycle repairs; transportation and warehousing; provision of accommodation and food and beverages; financial and insurance service; and real estate. Furthermore, the development pattern in East Seram Regency still adopts the development pattern in continental areas as evidenced by the economic sectors in the marine and waters whose potential have not been fully utilized.

Abstract

Abundant availability of natural resources is not a guarantee for the welfare of community who live around them. The natural resources in archipelagic areas have their own diversity, both in terms of their utilization types and patterns. Coconut plants in the copra farming is one of the examples. This study aims to analyze determinants of poverty of copra farmers and contribution of copra farming to farmer household income. The research was conducted in Labuan Village, Nort West Seram District, Central Maluku Regency. There was a total of 35 respondents consisting of copra farmers participating in this study in April – June 2022. Data collection techniques were carried out through interviews, observation and questionnaires with the primary data source coming from copra farmers in Labuan Village. While data analysis is done by first calculating production costs, receipts, income analysis and business contributions. The results show that the copra farming was the income for the farmer households reaching IDR 4,794,304 and the production cost reached IDR 972,273. However, the copra farming contribution to the farmer household income was still relatively low at only 3.49%. Meanwhile, the determinants of poverty of copra farmers included limited access to assets, lack of capital, poor level of skills, and limited markets. As a result of these vulnerabilities, the farmers were required to look for new alternative income sources as a strategy to maintain their household livelihood.

Abstract

Product diversification efforts can be used as a strategy to develop knowledge and skills as well as an alternative source of income for community households. The product diversification can be more optimal if it is supported by the availability of raw material sources located close to the community and wide market potentials so as to lower production costs incurred. This study uses a mixed method with a sequential exploration approach. This method begins with the use of qualitative method, followed by the quantitative method and interpretation. This study puts more emphasis on the qualitative analysis. Respondents of this study include farmers, community leaders and the government of Negeri Booi. Findings reveal that the most suitable diversifications of nutmeg products in Negeri Booi were in the form of nutmeg cider business and nutmeg juice business. Both of these businesses were supported by the availability of abundant raw materials, not too big business capital, and wide marketing potentials. This phenomenon was also supported by the existence of local customs, traditions and wisdom which were always applied in the community activities to meet their household needs.

Abstract

Small and Medium Entreprises (SMEs) play important and strategic roles in the regional economy, as well as at the national level. The SMEs refer to productive public economic operations proven to be resilient in times of crises. At the regional level, the presence of SMEs has indirectly absorbed labor and lowered unemployment, which is a constraint to economic progress. However, at the regional level, they face insignificant challenges in expanding their business, particularly in terms of production capacity and marketing strategy. The Community Service Team of Department of Development Economics of Faculty of Business and Economics of Pattimura University, provided training and science and technology diffusion. The training was delivered through counseling on improving the production capacity and marketing strategy while the science and technology diffusion was spread through the development of nutmeg syrup products. Outcomes of the Community Service activity included identifying the potential and problems developing the SMEs, as well as providing solutions by providing a more appealing container for the nutmeg syrup than the previous one, and increasing group members’ knowledge of increasing the production capacity and marketing strategy for the nutmeg syrup products.

Abstract

This article highlights the meaning of ecclesiastical teachings based on the Bible as the Word of God in an effort to meet the needs of the poor in the Negeri (village) Booi congregation through the tradition or local wisdom of “nutmeg collecting”. This study employs Max Weber’s point of view on social action, where for every social activity carried out, there is always an internal motivation (Vertehen). This study was done in a qualitative manner with an ethnographic approach conducted in April 2022 – December 2022. The data was collected through in-depth interviews, observation and documentation. The data was analyzed following the stages proposed by Chariri with source triangulation as a strategy in examining the data validity. The results show that the local wisdom of “nutmeg collecting” could be used as a strategy in overcoming poverty problems, especially related to income inequality experienced by women. In the mainstream (classical/neoclassical) economic views, the behavior of this indigenous community was certainly very detrimental, as it was related to efforts to maximize income for oneself. However, on the contrary, this local wisdom also emphasized the needs of others which were supported by the religious teachings they believed in. This condition also emphasized that the presence of the local wisdom supported by the religious teachings was an informal insurance that the needs of the poor women of the indigenous community would always be met at any time through the availability of fallen nutmeg.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the effect of tax revenue and the General Allocation Fund on the spending ability of the Ambon City government prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, using a 10-year period data from the Regional Government Budget of Ambon City obtained from the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia, Directorate General of Fiscal Balance available online. The data collected was in the form of annual reports, with a total of 10 annual financial reports of Ambon City. The data was analyzed using classical assumption analysis and multiple linear regression analysis. The results show that both partially and simultaneously, the Regional Tax and General Allocation Fund have a significant effect on the capital expenditure of the Ambon City government. In other words, the higher the Regional Tax and General Allocation Fund, the higher the capital expenditure of the Ambon City government. This condition indicated that the Ambon City was still heavily reliant on the central government transfers. In fact, the Ambon City government should be able to optimize the sources of Local Own-Source Revenue and develop the region’s potential, such as the tourism sector, so that it could be independent in financing the regional economic development. This finding is also supported by the results of testing the coefficient of determination, where the R-square value is 0.951096 (95.1%), suggesting that the Regional Tax and General Allocation Fund could explain 95.1% of the capital expenditure of the Ambon City government, while the remaining 4.9% could be explained by other variables not included in the study.

Abstract

Title: Livelihoods Assets and The Efficiency of Supply Chain-Value Chain Model of Small Pelagic Capture Fisheries of Coastal Communities of Saparua Island This study aims to investigate livelihoods assets and the effectiveness of supply chain and value chain model of small pelagic capture fisheries of coastal communities of Saparua Island. This study combined a quantitative method using a survey design. The primary data was collected from field research using in-depth interviews and focus group discussions (FGDs), while the secondary data was collected from related agencies, jurnals, and reports. The data was analyzed using livelihood asset analysis and supply chain performance analysis. The results show that the coastal communities of Saparua Island have a diversity of livelihood assets, including natural assets, human assets, physical assets, social assets and financial assets. However, among the five livelihood assets that have a major contribution to livelihoods are natural assets and social assets. Meanwhile, the effectiveness of the supply chain-value chain model shows that the lower the marketing or production costs, marketing margin, consumer prices paid, but the producer prices received would be higher. The marketing activities could be considered successful if they were supported by a high customer purchasing power and proper distribution. This study concludes that there were two effective short marketing chains with only two actors (fishermen – collecting traders and fishermen – retailers / papalele women). The two marketing chains, however, must be treated differently, with the former having a lower effectiveness value than the later.

Abstract

Efforts to promote micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSME) are frequently limited by the knowledge on promotion, particularly because they rely on the word of mouth and the customers are the nearby communities. In fact, advertising on Google Maps is a powerful way to attract more customers. For this reason, the Community Service (Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PkM)) aims to train and mentor MSME partners in Rijali Village, Sirimau District, Ambon City in developing Google Maps-based business location tags for promotional purposes, delivered through lectures with elaborated explanation and demonstration. There was a total of 25 MSME partners participated in these PkM activities which took place on October 13 – 17, 2023. After the training and mentoring, there is an increase in the MSME partners’ knowledge and promotion skills using Google Maps compared to their pre-test score. The PkM output results in the MSMEs in Rijali Village being tagged on Google Maps.
