Abstract

One of the changes that occurs because of globalization is the change from monolingualism to bilingualism that causes problems that require them to adapt. Pentatonix, an american international artist, was interested to rearrange “Papaoutai” by Stromae and add it to their next album. Their French pronunciation was not perfect according to phonetic transcription in Le Petit Robert 2019. It was interfered by American English pronunciation as Weinreich stated that interference could be found when a multilingual speaker puts one language norm into another language (Weinreich, 2010), The aim of this research is to explain the types and causes of the interference in the song recorded in PTX Vol. III in 2014. The result shows that the interference was caused by under-differentiation of phones, re-interpretation of distinctions, phone-subtitution, liaison-caused mistakes, and inconsistency of Pentatonix when pronouncing the lyrics. There is also meaning-changing mistakes. Keywords: interference, French song reinterpretation, Pentatonix, Papaoutai

Abstract

Misinterpretation of intonation can cause obstacles in communication or more severe problems. One case, for example, of misunderstanding intonation was that nonnative speakers often thought that Lampungnese neutral speech uttered by native speakers was angry speech. This research was conducted in order to carry out the acoustic factor behind the misunderstanding. This study applied the IPO approach with three main activities: speech production, speech acoustic analysis, and perceptual test experiments. The data were recordings of Lampungnese neutral speech. The utterance consisted of three sentence patterns, each of which was repeated four times by four native speakers. Furthermore, the data were compared to Indonesian neutral speech to find out the contrast between them. The contrasts were considered according to the acoustic parameter which gave an angry impression in Lampungnese neutral speech. Results of analysis showed that neutral Indonesian and Lampungnese neutral speech were differentiated by pitch; Lampungnese pitch is higher and its contour pattern resembles angry speech patterns. Furthermore, experimental results showed that different pitch height and contour pattern lead to the perception of nonLampung speakers considering Lampungnese neutral speech as angry speech.

Abstract

Verbs dire have a wide range of semantic features. Therefore, there are various verbs that are semantically related to this verb. This results in the probability of using verbs that are not correct to describe a concept, idea, or feeling, hence it will cause ambiguity and error. On the contrary, this study discusses the similarities and differences in semantic features contained in dire verbs with an analysis using Leech's (2004) and Nida's (2015) theory of semantic feature. Verbs with dire meaning are research data obtained from the online dictionary Larousse.fr and analyzed using qualitative methods with literature study. There were 49 verbs with dire meaning which were then grouped according to the same components. It was found that the verbs can be classified as telling, dialogue, reading, ordering, articulating, publishing, informing, responding to words or actions, expressing, and affirming. Sketch engine has helped to find the minimum component and shows the verb usage in context. The difference in the use lies in the several components it contains: how to do audible activities, for example articulating, having dialogue, informing; the urgency of dire action, for instance what is contained in ordering and responding to an action or words, verb objects like fairy tales, imaginary stories, or facts; the contents of the discussion, such as facts, secrets, ideas, and thoughts; the way of expressing that is specific, detailed, and precise.

Abstract

Van Gogh, the Dutch post-impressionist painter, tried to form a community with Gaugin, the French post-impressionist painter, printmaker and sculptor. This article studied VG’s relationship with Gauguin in letters written by VG. The words choice, language style, letter structure, and syntactic functions used in the sentences of his letters were extracted from VG’s six surviving letters and analyzed using a qualitative method, CDA approach and Le Querler’s French syntactic functions theory. We discover that VG tried to build a respectful friendship through politeness but not completely in a formal language style. This asymmetrical relationship reflects through the contrasting diction, choice of pronouns and greetings, the use of implicit language and also by expansion in the sentence structure to be more polite. Through VG’s letter-writing style, their relationship evolves from being transactional into something more personal. Seniority and reputational differences often became a factor influencing relationships and communication. Keywords: critical discourse analysis, Gauguin, language style, syntactic function, van Gogh

Abstract

The glance of perfume advertising found in the previous study has two main themes: visual and verbal strategies. Video advertisement of Guerlain brand perfume from France for his latest male series, L’Homme Idéal, displayed containing both themes referred to the domination of monochrome colors and the narration of the explanation of perfume itself uploaded through YouTube social media. This study examines metaphors and signs in an advertisement to see how far the advertisement affects people’s minds in playing with their imagination, using a qualitative method and literature studies as a data collection technique. The analysis uses Kövecses’s metaphorical theory, Peirce’s semiotics, and Baudrillard’s hyperreality and is supported seven informants’ input. It is found that seductive language in the form of metaphors succeeded in attracting male consumers. Various signs are also found to help the metaphor visualize the ideal image of masculinity through handsomeness, intelligence, and strength. Combining these two types of themes in the depiction of lifestyle and the explanation of the perfume smell in this video advertisement has a great potential to affect people in achieving hyperreality.

Abstract

An annotated translation is a translation with notes or annotations of the equivalent selected in the target language with the aim of being accountable for the equivalent. This study examines a tale entitled “la Sorcière de la Rue Mouffetard” written by Pierre Gripari. This study employs qualitative methods and a comparative model to discuss translation problems and their solutions using translation strategies from Molina and Albir (2002). The use of interjection, idioms, and words containing culture is the problem in this fairy tale translation of language and cultural elements. Various dictionaries and websites are used both in the process of translating and the annotation process. The results of this study are expected to become one of the Indonesian-language fairy tales that will enrich children’s literature, especially from France.

Abstract

Abstract With the advancement and the integration of technology with education, learning through the internet is proven to be effective to raise learner’s capability, and more importantly foreign language ability. This research has a goal to see whether the use of foreign language learning application called Memrise as an additional lesson outside of French class at the university level is effective in French language learning. Mainly to see the improvement of three competence in the French language; Compréhension Orale, Grammaire and Vocabulaire competence. Participants of this research consist of college students who are attending a university French class at level A1 based on CECRL and have never learnt French as a foreign language before. The research method uses the qualitative approach of a case study comparing two groups: the observational group (given the task to use Memrise outside of class as an additional lesson) and the control group (without any additional lessons)..

Abstract

EasyJet, a UK low-cost airline service provider launched several attractive advertisements to attract consumers' interest, one of which is a series of posters issued in 2016. These posters are interesting because the words show complex morphological processes and implied meanings that can be extracted. Previous studies have mostly examined morphological formation or have conducted semiotic studies, but none have linked morphological processes and images on posters with a semiotic approach. Therefore, this study analyzes the word formation process in the 2016 EasyJet advertisement, which has undergone a derivation process, and finds out the meaning contained in the advertisement using a semiotic approach. This qualitative study examines the posters based on Lehmann and Berthet’s (2018) theory of word formation and Barthes' (2013) semiotics theory. The result of this study indicates that in this advertising poster, EasyJet attracts people to use its services in several market segments or consumer groups according to their respective characteristics. The stratagem revealed through these posters is that EasyJet is an airline that wants to invite its prospective passengers to explore new activities.

Abstract

Abstract

Managing cultural heritage is not solely the responsibility of the government. However, local people must be invited to play an active role too if preservation is to be successful, because utilization of the site and its resources is directly related to the interaction of people’s lives with cultural heritage and if utilization is not managed properly then social conflict will arise. Trowulan is recognized as a national heritage area through Decree No. 260/M/2013 from the Ministry of Education and Culture, but its preservation needs to be properly managed. This study applied the qualitative approach: observation on sites used by people either controlled by the state or owned by the community; in-depth interviews to persons who have a role in public life, and of central and local government officials; discussion groups with researchers, academics, observers, officials of the central government; and the study of legislation. This study captured the essence of people’s aspirations in the utilization of Trowulan to create amodel for community-based Trowulan utilization.
