Abstract

Translation quality assessment is based on the translator’s fulfillment in transferring the message. In the case of translating satire, it must consider adequacy aspects. This paper aims to analyze the translation of satirical utterances using the perspective of relevance theory. Based on this theory, the translation satire and its source expression should result in similar interpretations. The translators are not only required to translate the messages of the satire from the source text (ST) into the target text (TT), but they must also produce interpretative resemblance of the same relevance degree. This research uses qualitative method and aims to analyze the degree of relevance in the translation of satire. The data used satire in Animal Farm and its translation in the Binatangisme novel. The satirical utterance in the ST will be analyzed employing the satire classification. The findings indicate that degree of relevance determines the interpretative resemblance, the similarity of implicated conclusion, and success of communication. The degree of relevance contributes to the translation of satire.

Abstract

This study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how the principles of politeness influence interactions in formal contexts, particularly in video interviews featuring the IMF Managing Director after the 2022 G20 Summit in Bali. The research objective is to investigate the extent to which interview participants adhere to or violate politeness principles in their communication, focusing on the use of politeness maxims and strategies. A pragmatic approach is employed to analyze the interview transcript, yielding deeper insights into the interaction. The analysis reveals that interview participants actively employ various politeness strategies to maintain harmonious interpersonal relations while effectively communicating important policy and economic messages. However, instances of politeness maxim violations also occur, potentially influenced by communicative goals or cultural differences. This study highlights the importance of politeness in formal interaction contexts such as video interviews, as well as the complexity of balancing politeness with communication effectiveness. The implications of these findings are not only relevant for understanding politeness practices in video interviews but also for intercultural communication more broadly. Further research in this field is expected to provide deeper insights into politeness practices and effective communication strategies in formal contexts.

Abstract

Tract as a communication platform to call people to participate in demonstrations is still used by the French until 2019 in the Yellow Vest Movement. This proves the important usage of the track in France. The most important movement in French history that involves the utilization of tract was in Mai 68. By using it, the movement initiated by students of the University of Nanterre (May, 3rd 1968) was able to invite workers to join them on May 13 1968. However, it has a disadvantage due to paper usage: spatial limitations for the transmission of information. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to the choice of words, phrases, clauses, sentences, and presentations. Use qualitative methods and literature study; this article describes the utilization of the function accessory in the tracts on May 13 68, based on the sentence structure theory by Le Querler (1994). In the tract, variations of function accessories are presented according to the amount of paper used and to the freedom of presentation of the sentence by the creator. As a result, its utilization and presentation in the tract help the various groups involved on May 13, 1968, to gain a better understanding of the reasons and objectives to be carried out in the movement.

Abstract

French has several types of language varieties known as Registres de langue, including soutenu, courant, and familier. These varieties are used depending on the context of communication, the interlocutor, and the communication situation. This qualitative research aims to identify the types of language varieties used in Bumbu digital magazine. T Courant variety dominates the articles in the first three editions of the magazine. In this way, the target audience becomes wider because anyone will easily understand the contents of Bumbu magazine articles. Misunderstandings that may arise can be avoided. These findings support the view that language use in a news context can reflect the subjectivity of journalists (Bentounsi, 2021). The increase in the number of sentences and types of sentences in the three articles shows an increase in the ability to compose articles in French as well as adaptation and development in presenting information.

Abstract

Recently, social media like Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook have been widely used for tourism destination attractiveness. The research investigates how to create a tourism destination image on Instagram from a social semiotic perspective. Data comprises 17 photos of Blue Flame posted by 7 Destination Marketing Organizations (DMOs). Applying the Visual Grammar framework by Kress & Leeuwen (2021), particularly the representational meta function, and Speech Functions by Halliday & Matthiessen (2014), this study finds how verbal texts support visual modes in creating the image of the Blue Flame at Ijen Geopark. Findings show that: (i) Narrative non-transactional action photos are more frequently used to promote the destination image; (ii) Statements delivering praise are most often used to give positive value to the destination; (iii) Narrative non-transactional action pictures attract more viewers’ attention; and (iv) Post with conceptual symbolic photos can evoke viewers’ interest to know more about the destination. Based on the findings, eventhough a picture is the main visual semiotic resource on Instagram, it needs support by verbal resources to make its meaning clearer for viewers. Practical implications of the study and directions for future studies are presented.

Abstract

This research investigates the translation of archaisms, particularly here-words and there-words, from English to Indonesian, highlighting the unique challenges they present. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the study is framed by the Skopos theory and ISO 24495-1:2023 - Plain Language principles. The Skopos theory stresses the translation's intended purpose, advocating a functional approach that enhances the target text's communicative efficacy. ISO 24495-1:2023 ensures legal documents are clear, concise, and accessible, maintaining their legal integrity. The research examines a bilingual English-Indonesian contractual document, the Global Master Repurchase Agreement, to analyze the translation of these archaic terms. Findings show that translating archaisms demands careful attention to nuances, cultural connotations, and legal implications. The study reveals that using plain Indonesian expressions improves readability and reduces misinterpretation. Emphasizing cultural and contextual considerations, it advocates for strategies that maintain the original text's legal validity while enhancing accessibility. This aligns with the global movement towards plain language in legal documents, promoting transparency and efficiency in international transactions. The research provides insights into effective translation practices for legal archaisms, supporting the development of clearer legal documentation in Indonesia and contributing to the broader discourse on improving legal translation in a globalized world.

Abstract

This study aimed to obtain the characteristics of verb structure in the speech of Indonesian speakers with Broca’s aphasia and their relation to the Argument Structure Complexity Hypothesis (ASCH) and grammatical encoding. There are three questions, namely the interrelationships of verbs and syntactic functions, interrelationship of verbs and semantic functions, and the contribution to the ASCH and grammatical coding. Eight participants took part, divided into four with aphasia and four Non-Brain Damaged (NBD) participants as controls. The research used an experimental research method. The instruments were five images adapting Cookie Theft (an instrument used in an aphasia test in various languages) and 3 instructions to tell about daily activities. The results showed that participants with aphasia tended to use verbs in simpler structures than controls. Therefore, this study supports the ASCH about the argument simplification and tendency of grammatical coding problems, important as coming from Indonesian, an Austronesian language. Clinical implications are discussed.

Abstract

Anglicism is handled through rules and policies in order to maintain the purity of the French language. This study aims to determine motives of French and Quebec leftist media for using anglicism through their headlines. This qualitative study uses Tamine (1990) and Meney (2017) morphological theory, Le Querler’s syntactic theory (1994) and Hudson's concept of loanwords (1996). Despite the same ideology, the two media have different motives in using anglicism. Le Monde overrides the rules as a marketing strategy; while La Presse tends to follow them to maintain the French language as the identity of Quebec. Thus, this study supports previous research by Febrianne Miranda (2018) and Kautsar Miranda (2021) that Quebec is better in maintaining the French language sovereignty than the French government who is flexible in dealing with anglicism depending on the development of foreign policy and the ideology of its government. Keywords: anglicism, headlines, le monde, la presse, morphology

Abstract

Islamism is a political movement or doctrine that pursues the exclusive application of Islamic values in politics and society. As a state security issue, Islamism has also become a political concern for the French government, including Marine Le Pen, to fight against in the form of propaganda. This research aims to show Marine Le Pen’s use of sentence structure in one of her interviews in the live political broadcast Le Grand Jury to publicly propagate anti-Islamism so that it might influence the French public. This qualitative research uses syntactic theory by Le Querler (1994), Malraux's political propaganda theory (1928), and Leech's (1981) components of meaning. The research results found that the dominant sentence structure used by Marine Le Pen involves phrase complexes so that the delivery of her propaganda ideas becomes more holistic, clear, and full of emphasis, leaving no room for the public to question why France should start fighting the ideology of Islamism. The elements of fear, demonization and harassment in sentences are the political propaganda tools used to persuade. Thus, through the explanation of the sentence structure and the use of political propaganda tools, it is proven that this speech was used to propagate the Islamist movement and succeeded in increasing its electability in the 2022 elections. Keywords: Islamism, Marine Le Pen, Propaganda, Sentence structure
