Abstract

The Brexit referendum has stimulated European media to highlight the impact for Britain and other European Union countries. As a country established with two different political ideologies, French media has the ability to cover the latest global issues from the point of view of their political ideology. This research aims to see whether the French media shows a negative framing towards Britain and maintains the media ideology, right (Le Figaro) and center-left (Le Monde), in publicizing the news of the death of Queen Elizabeth II and the cancer diagnosis of King Charles III. This qualitative research uses the Creswell (2014) method, syntactic theory by Le Querler (1994), and media framing by Pan & Kosicki (1993). The research found that there is no negative sentiment from French media towards Britain. However, Le Figaro’s coverage reflects a negative framing towards the news of Charles III's current health. This is evidenced through the usage of simple sentences (les phrases simples) with a direct approach in Le Figaro’s headlines to give the impression of its focus to the continuation of the monarchy. By contrast, Le Monde’s coverage tends to use compound sentences (les phrases complexes) in the headlines with a descriptive content that focuses on the reader’s emotions. The dismantling script and rhetorical structure of news media framing by Pan & Kosicki (1993) are the essential elements of this research to identify how the French media frames news regarding two leaders of the British monarchy.

Abstract

This study examines the realization of politeness in the questioning patterns used by a Kompas TV journalist when interviewing the Managing Director of the IMF during the 2022 G20 Summit. The analysis focuses on three aspects: Leech’s (1993) politeness principles, sentence structure based on Kolln and Funk (2008), and the spontaneity of questions determined by the tendency to use written scripts. This study employs a qualitative method using data from an English-language interview transcript. The results show that non-spontaneous questions generally employ complex structures and polite modal expressions, while spontaneous questions tend to be more concise, using simpler structures yet still maintaining politeness through neutral and non-confrontational wording. These three aspects complement each other in maintaining the interviewee’s image and reducing potential face-threatening acts, particularly in sensitive diplomatic interactions. The findings emphasize that sentence structure and delivery play a significant role in shaping politeness within media discourse.

Abstract

Abstract

This article examines the effectiveness of virelangue as a strategy to overcome phonetic interference in beginners who have never studied French. This case study qualitative research used pre-test and post-test strategies to see the development of pronunciation from each trial, then analyzed the tests results using the theories of phonetics and phonology by Léon (1993) and Chaer (2009), the analysis of language errors by Tarigan & Tarigan (2011), and the theory of interference by Weinreich (2011). The results indicate that there is interference called phonetic treatment of borrowed words. The most difficult sounds to pronounce are [ɛ̃] and [Ê’]. Due to the limited knowledge of the research subjects, there is also hypercorrection. During these trials, there is a development of pronunciation that improved the research subjects accomplishment from average to outstanding. Asian language studies students, learning more difficult sounds, were the only group pronouncing the virelangue correctly in the last trial. Keywords: virelangue, reading aloud, phonetics, interference, pronunciation

Abstract

The COVID-19 disease required everyone to go into lockdown. All activities and communications were carried out through mobile devices, driving online content consumption to double. The Instagram app, which is part of social media, increased its visits by 43 percent during the lockdown of the COVID-19 pandemic. As users turn to social media, influencers are emerging as figures in shaping online interactions and trends. One of the popular French influencers is Léna Mahfouf (@lenamahfouf). As a global fashion influencer, Mahfouf often uses English transitions in her captions. This qualitative research will identify the types of code-switching found with Poplack's theory (1980) and the driving factors, with Hoffman's theory (1991). This research uses the qualitative method with a data collection technique and literature study. The results found that the most common code switching is intra-sentential switching (within sentences) because it is talking about a particular topic, namely fashion. French is identified as a Matrix Language (bilingual first language or dominant language) and English is an Embedded Language (language embedded in the switch). In conducting promotions with code-switching, the most prominent advertising appeals were found, which are the appeal to promote product features (feature appeal) and share the latest information (news appeal) related to fashion.

Abstract

Abstract

The Indonesian language is becoming increasingly important globally, creating a growing demand for its instruction, including in France. However, learners often face difficulties due to interference between their mother tongue and the Indonesian language they are learning. While some papers offered solutions to overcome these difficulties, these have tended to concentrate on the linguistic aspects and have overlooked the extralinguistic aspects. This paper seeks to address the issue by examining the extralinguistic aspects found in recordings of 10 Indonesian sentences containing phonemes expected to trigger pronunciation errors and spoken by three Malay-Indonesian studies students from different academic years at the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales (INALCO), from three different college levels. The data was collected through three separate interviews, including the recording of the aforementioned sentences and a discussion about the subjects’ linguistic background. The result was then examined to highlight the extralinguistic and linguistic factors affecting the production of interference. Afterwards, this paper then offers pedagogical suggestions. The study mainly uses phonemic interference and language learning theory, as well as theories related to the psychological and socio-cultural aspects of language learning. This research found that motivation and learning strategy are the two most important variables in the psychological aspect, while input and feedback are the most important aspects in the socio-cultural aspect. Nevertheless, the most decisive factor in Indonesian mastery is the duration of learning.

Abstract

Community Based Model of Trowulan Cultural Heritage Region Utilization. Managing cultural heritage is not solely the responsibility of the government. However, local people must be invited to play an active role too if preservation is to be successful, because utilization of the site and its resources is directly related to the interaction of people’s lives with cultural heritage and if utilization is not managed properly then social conflict will arise. Trowulan is recognized as a national heritage area through Decree No. 260/M/2013 from the Ministry of Education and Culture, but its preservation needs to be properly managed. This study applied the qualitative approach: observation on sites used by people either controlled by the state or owned by the community; in-depth interviews to persons who have a role in public life, and of central and local government officials; discussion groups with researchers, academics, observers, officials of the central government; and the study of legislation. This study captured the essence of people’s aspirations in the utilization of Trowulan to create amodel for community-based Trowulan utilization. Our model has produced benefits to social welfare and national identity. All aspects are related with each other to provide feedback (management board, legal aspect, blueprint, funding) so that it becomes strong and sustainable management. Abstract

The distinctiveness of style and expression in poetry is often reflected in literary movements such as symbolism, using symbols to bridge the real world and the world of ideas while emphasizing musicality in verse. Verlaine frequently explored themes of love in his works. His poem Le Rossignol portrays the experience of losing a first love and transforms it into a universal symbol of human suffering. This study examines the representation of lost first love through a qualitative textual approach, drawing on the theories of poetry to analyze structure as a unified whole and of sound to assess vocal and consonantal musicality. The findings reveal that loss is expressed through alliteration, assonance, rhyme, and metrical freedom, while natural symbols such as the bird, tree, and moon project the poet’s inner state. Thus, Le Rossignol demonstrates how Verlaine employs sound and symbolism to articulate first love as an existential reflection on melancholy.
