Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which the Consciousness-Raising (C-R) method improves students' writing skills and to identify the factors that influence the improvement process. The study was conducted with third-semester students in the English Department, consisting of 16 students. The research design was Classroom Action Research (CAR) and was carried out in three cycles over a period of 12 weeks, with four meetings including one test in each cycle. The cycles comprised of planning, action, observation, and reflection. Qualitative data was obtained through observation, field notes, and interviews, while quantitative data was obtained from students' writing tests. The results of this study showed improvement in the students' writing skills, as demonstrated by the teaching and learning activities throughout each cycle and the increasing scores of the students' writing tests, which went from 65.45 in cycle 1 to 77.63 in cycle 2 and 88.22 in cycle 3. The decrease in errors in each test cycle also supported this improvement. The observation and field notes indicated that the C-R method increased students' attention and awareness, resulting in more focus and engagement in the learning process. The factors that influenced the improvement of students' writing skills were motivation, the role of the instructor, classroom environment, materials, and media. The C-R method was found to be effective in improving students' writing skills and resolving writing problems. The researcher therefore recommends the use of this method, taking into consideration the supporting factors.

Abstract

English learning is applied in schools to develop students' knowledge, language skills, and positive attitudes towards English. The skills in learning English that should be mastered are: a) listening, b) speaking, c) reading, and d) writing. The four types of skills have different levels of knowledge, so they can be taught in different ways. To master these four skills, students must first master the language component, also known as language-focused learning, which consists of vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. The problems experienced by students of SMA Negeri 4 Sungai Penuh in learning English include (1) Students' understanding of English language material is still lacking, (2) lack of guidance on the essential components of learning English, (3) still lack practical activities in learning English and (4) decreasing students' interest in learning English. The methods implemented are the lecture method, cooperative learning, student-centered learning, and interaction methods. The results of community service show that the students of SMA Negeri 4 Sungai Penuh get an increase in knowledge, which can be seen from the results of the pre-test in the poor category and the post-test results in the medium category. From these results, the Community Service team concluded that language-focused learning-based English assistance increased students' interest in learning English. They already have a basic knowledge of English based on language-focused learning to improve the four skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This community service activity is expected to provide broad insight for students and the school, especially in learning English.

Abstract

This study aims to examine EFL Students’ dependence on ChatGPT and its impact on their English learning process. The study focuses on second-semester students of the English Education program at an Islamic higher education institution in Jambi, Indonesia. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, using semi-structured interviews with five participants. The data were analysed thematically to identify students’ experiences and perceptions. The findings indicated that ChatGPT provides positive benefits, including improvements in vocabulary, grammar, and writing skills, as well as rapid feedback accompanied by clear explanations. However, the study also reveals several negative impacts of ChatGPT use, such as decreased critical thinking skills, excessive dependence on AI-generated content, and reduced intrinsic motivation for independent learning. Therefore, this study emphasises that although ChatGPT serves as a supportive tool in English language learning, its use needs to be carefully managed to ensure responsible and effective application. The findings offer insights for educators in integrating ChatGPT by balancing AI technological support with students’ own learning efforts, so that learners remain active and independent in the English learning processThis study aims to examine EFL Students’ dependence on ChatGPT and its impact on their English learning process. Abstract

Critical reading (CR) is a crucial academic literacy skill for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students to evaluate and engage with academic texts. This mixed-method study explored Indonesian EFL students’ perceptions of critical reading, including their self-assessed CR skills, perceived institutional support, gender differences, and frequently read English reading materials. Quantitative data were collected from 100 students through questionnaires, followed by interviews with 10 participants. Results showed that students had positive perceptions of critical reading and recognized the importance of this skill in an academic context. However, advanced skills such as identifying bias and evaluating arguments remain challenging. The study found that gender was not a significant factor. Qualitative findings revealed linguistic difficulties and limited institutional support, even though students frequently interact with academic texts. Practical implications for teachers and educational institutions in the Indonesian context are put forward.

Abstract

This study aimed to answer the main problem whether learning achievement could be viewed from self-regulated learning, future orientation and parental support to obtain empirical support. This research used quantitative methods, the sample of 103 people. The data was collected with instruments, scale (1) self-regulated learning, (2) future orientation and (3) parental support.  Learning achievement used report card grades. The results showed that learning achievement could be viewed from self-regulated learning, future orientation and parental support. It got very significant empirical support., score F reg=43,155 dan p=0,000 (p<0,01). Self-regulated learning, future orientation, and parental support provided an effective contribution of 55.4% to learning achievement. The biggest SE was from parental support 37.4%, followed by self-regulated learning 12.7%, and future orientation 6.6%. Based on the findings, the researcher suggests: (1) parents need to maximize learning support for children, strengthen emotional support, instrumental, and informative support. (2) teachers need to introduce self-regulated learning to students. (3) teachers and parents to explore the future orientation of children or students well, so that they grow stronger for a more planned future. And (4) researchers recommend the following research in elementary, junior high, senior high school and PT.

Abstract

Technology plays an important role in supporting students’ English skill development. This study aims to investigate EFL students’ perceptions of Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) in improving English skills and to examine whether these perceptions differ by gender. Previous studies have widely explored EFL learners’ attitudes toward technology-assisted English learning. However, many studies discuss learners’ perceptions in general and pay limited attention to MALL or gender-based comparisons. Findings on gender differences also remain inconsistent. Some studies report differences in attitudes and technology use, while others find no significant variation. This inconsistency leaves gender’s role in MALL perceptions unclear. Moreover, few mixed-methods studies combine quantitative and qualitative data to explain how gender may or may not influence students’ perceptions of MALL. To address these gaps, this study employed an explanatory mixed-methods design. Quantitative data were collected from 72 students using Davis’s (1993) technology integration questionnaire and analyzed descriptively. Qualitative data were obtained through semi-structured interviews with ten participants and examined using thematic analysis. The survey results showed that students had generally positive perceptions of MALL, especially in terms of usefulness and ease of use. The findings also indicated no significant differences between male and female students. Interview results supported these findings by showing that MALL helped students understand learning materials and develop their English skills. Overall, this study suggests that MALL can serve as a practical technology-based medium in English instruction. It also provides lecturers with useful insights for increasing student engagement and supporting effective English skill development.
