Abstract

This study investigated the perspectives of non-English major students at an Islamic institution of higher education in Indonesia regarding the attributes of effective English as a Foreign Language (EFL) lecturers. The study aimed to identify key factors students consider important in learning English and to explore teaching strategies that enhance learning effectiveness. A quantitative survey method was employed, involving 300 students from various non-English majors. Data were analyzed using ANOVA to examine differences among groups, followed by post-hoc Tukey tests to identify specific group differences. The results indicated that students rated communication skills (M = 4.52, SD = 0.61) and teaching methods (M = 4.47, SD = 0.65) as the most important attributes of effective EFL lecturers. These were followed by lecturer credibility (M = 4.32, SD = 0.68) and knowledge of English (M = 4.29, SD = 0.70). Additional influential factors included the quality of interpersonal relationships between lecturers and students, fairness in assessment, and organization and preparation in teaching. Furthermore, the study found that the strategic use of the mother tongue (L1) in instruction increased students' confidence in using English. The implications of this study underscore the importance of flexible teaching approaches that accommodate diverse learning styles. The use of interactive methods, educational technology, and clear material delivery can significantly enhance the effectiveness of English language teaching in higher education settings.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which the Consciousness-Raising (C-R) method improves students' writing skills and to identify the factors that influence the improvement process. The study was conducted with third-semester students in the English Department, consisting of 16 students. The research design was Classroom Action Research (CAR) and was carried out in three cycles over a period of 12 weeks, with four meetings including one test in each cycle. The cycles comprised of planning, action, observation, and reflection. Qualitative data was obtained through observation, field notes, and interviews, while quantitative data was obtained from students' writing tests. The results of this study showed improvement in the students' writing skills, as demonstrated by the teaching and learning activities throughout each cycle and the increasing scores of the students' writing tests, which went from 65.45 in cycle 1 to 77.63 in cycle 2 and 88.22 in cycle 3. The decrease in errors in each test cycle also supported this improvement. The observation and field notes indicated that the C-R method increased students' attention and awareness, resulting in more focus and engagement in the learning process. The factors that influenced the improvement of students' writing skills were motivation, the role of the instructor, classroom environment, materials, and media. The C-R method was found to be effective in improving students' writing skills and resolving writing problems. The researcher therefore recommends the use of this method, taking into consideration the supporting factors.

Abstract

English learning is applied in schools to develop students' knowledge, language skills, and positive attitudes towards English. The skills in learning English that should be mastered are: a) listening, b) speaking, c) reading, and d) writing. The four types of skills have different levels of knowledge, so they can be taught in different ways. To master these four skills, students must first master the language component, also known as language-focused learning, which consists of vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. The problems experienced by students of SMA Negeri 4 Sungai Penuh in learning English include (1) Students' understanding of English language material is still lacking, (2) lack of guidance on the essential components of learning English, (3) still lack practical activities in learning English and (4) decreasing students' interest in learning English. The methods implemented are the lecture method, cooperative learning, student-centered learning, and interaction methods. The results of community service show that the students of SMA Negeri 4 Sungai Penuh get an increase in knowledge, which can be seen from the results of the pre-test in the poor category and the post-test results in the medium category. From these results, the Community Service team concluded that language-focused learning-based English assistance increased students' interest in learning English. They already have a basic knowledge of English based on language-focused learning to improve the four skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This community service activity is expected to provide broad insight for students and the school, especially in learning English.

Abstract

This study aims to examine EFL Students’ dependence on ChatGPT and its impact on their English learning process. The study focuses on second-semester students of the English Education program at an Islamic higher education institution in Jambi, Indonesia. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, using semi-structured interviews with five participants. The data were analysed thematically to identify students’ experiences and perceptions. The findings indicated that ChatGPT provides positive benefits, including improvements in vocabulary, grammar, and writing skills, as well as rapid feedback accompanied by clear explanations. However, the study also reveals several negative impacts of ChatGPT use, such as decreased critical thinking skills, excessive dependence on AI-generated content, and reduced intrinsic motivation for independent learning. Therefore, this study emphasises that although ChatGPT serves as a supportive tool in English language learning, its use needs to be carefully managed to ensure responsible and effective application. The findings offer insights for educators in integrating ChatGPT by balancing AI technological support with students’ own learning efforts, so that learners remain active and independent in the English learning processThis study aims to examine EFL Students’ dependence on ChatGPT and its impact on their English learning process. Abstract

Critical reading (CR) is a crucial academic literacy skill for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students to evaluate and engage with academic texts. This mixed-method study explored Indonesian EFL students’ perceptions of critical reading, including their self-assessed CR skills, perceived institutional support, gender differences, and frequently read English reading materials. Quantitative data were collected from 100 students through questionnaires, followed by interviews with 10 participants. Results showed that students had positive perceptions of critical reading and recognized the importance of this skill in an academic context. However, advanced skills such as identifying bias and evaluating arguments remain challenging. The study found that gender was not a significant factor. Qualitative findings revealed linguistic difficulties and limited institutional support, even though students frequently interact with academic texts. Practical implications for teachers and educational institutions in the Indonesian context are put forward.
