Abstract

This study is a quasi-experimental study aimed at finding improvement in students in teaching English reading skills through previewing, questioning, identifying, reading, and summarizing strategies. The study population consisted of students in Class VIIIA, 15 in the experimental class and 15 in the control class, and all students in Class VIIIB. The research data was collected through the distribution of pre-test and post-test questionnaires. The data were analyzed using SPSS 22. The analysis found that the students' performance improved after implementing the Preview, ask question, Identify, Read, and Summarize strategy in the experimental class. The mean score for the experimental class in the pre-test was 66.67, but the mean score for the class after the test was 89.60. Meanwhile, the mean score for the control class in the pre-test was 61.60, increasing to 82.40 using conventional methods. This means that implementing the PAIRS strategy improves students' reading comprehension. The intensity of each is meaningful at literal, interpretive, and critical levels. The phase encouraged the students to practice and improve their reading comprehension.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the performance of certified teachers using multisource feedback through multivariate data analysis. The researchers distributed an online 5-point Likert scale questionnaire. A total of sixty-one public elementary schools consented to participate in this study, with each school being represented by its principal, a group of teachers, and a cohort of students. The researchers conveniently chose a group of fellow teachers and students to avoid the school principals intervention. This study showed the covariance among school principals, fellow teachers, and students assessments. The findings in this study included the significant difference between students and teachers in the performance of certified teachers subject mastery. In contrast, the school principals indicated a similar perception to that of their fellow teachers. This study confirms that students gave an average score to teachers subject mastery, although the school principals and fellow teachers assessed it to be very good. Thus, a teacher certification program is expected to contribute to the teachers professionalism and the students excellence. A teacher certification program is anticipated to enhance the professionalism of teachers, particularly those specializing in English education. An individual possessing a high level of professional expertise is indispensable for the facilitation of quality education and learning.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate and evaluate how students at SMAN 4 Takalar perceive the challenges they face and how they are resolved when teaching descriptive text writing, especially in the wake of the covid-19 pandemic, using the Jigsaw model cooperative learning strategy. Traditional teaching and learning environments were drastically changed by the global pandemic, which created new challenges for both teachers and students, particularly in skill-based areas like writing. Students frequently struggle with descriptive text writing because it requires careful attention to detail, a comprehensive vocabulary, and logical arrangement. By encouraging active participation, peer-to-peer instruction, and cooperative problem-solving, the Jigsaw model, a cooperative learning approach in which students become “experts” on a portion of the material before teaching it to their peers is proposed as a potentially successful tactic for minimizing these learning difficulties. Particularly, this study looks into how students perceive the challenges that come with writing descriptive texts and how the Jigsaw method either helps them get outside existing challenges or creates new ones. Data will be collected through in-depth interviews, and documentations with eleventh-grade students at SMAN 4 Takalar using a qualitative research methodology. The anticipated findings will provide insight on how students explicitly perceive challenges in producing descriptive texts (such as vocabulary acquisition, idea development, organization, and grammar) and offer insights into how the Jigsaw technique affects these perceived issues. Students are expected to report advantages like higher confidence, better structural comprehension through collaborative text construction, and expanded vocabulary through peer interaction. On the other hand, the study will also find out what new challenges students have when using the Jigsaw strategy in a post-pandemic context, like adapting to group projects following extended periods of distance learning, controlling group dynamics, or ensuring personal responsibility. This study has significant implications for creating better and successful writing instruction strategies in the changing educational environment, providing useful advice for English teachers in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study examines how students at SMP IT As'adiyah Kaloling, a distant Islamic boarding school in Bantaeng, Indonesia, use TikTok in relation to their vocabulary knowledge and motivation in studying English. The study, which used a one-group pretest-posttest design and a quantitative technique, recruited 27 seventh-grade children. A vocabulary test, an interest survey, and structured interview questions were among the tools. With the mean score rising from 47.78 on the pretest to 86.67 on the posttest, the results showed a considerable improvement in the students' vocabulary mastery. This resulted in a normalized gain of 0.74, which was classified as high. With scores increasing from 37.63 to 44.89 and a normalized gain of 0.67 (medium-high category), students' engagement also improved. TikTok videos were used in the classroom for activities like sports and noun learning from @bluepopenglish. TikTok videos were used in the classroom for tasks like studying nouns from @bluepopenglish and sports vocabulary from @tinyme. All students considered TikTok-based learning to be more engaging and inspiring, according to structured interviews. The results are consistent with prior research that highlights TikTok's pedagogical potential for vocabulary learning and student engagement. This study's uniqueness is its rural setting, which demonstrates that, with teacher guidance, TikTok can be successfully included even in schools with little resources. TikTok showed to be an interesting tool that promotes vocabulary mastering and boosts students' enthusiasm and confidence in learning English, despite drawbacks such internet connection and the lack of a control group.

Abstract

This study investigates the challenges and strategies experienced by English teachers in utilizing Wordwall as a digital assessment tool in a rural junior high school in Indonesia. While digital platforms are increasingly integrated into English language teaching, their application in under-resourced environments poses unique complexities. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the study draws on in-depth interviews with two English teachers from SMPN 1 Tinondo, Southeast Sulawesi. Data were analyzed thematically using Braun and Clarke’s framework, revealing three major findings. First, infrastructural barriers, including limited internet access, shared digital devices, and inadequate training, significantly constrained the optimal use of Wordwall. Second, despite these limitations, teachers acknowledged various pedagogical benefits, such as increased student motivation, interactive assessment experiences, and alignment with competency-based curriculum goals. Third, teachers demonstrated creative adaptation strategies, such as rotating device access, using group-based tasks, and modifying content formats to accommodate technical challenges. These strategies reflect a high degree of teacher agency in overcoming contextual constraints. The study contributes to the discourse on digital assessment in rural EFL contexts by highlighting not only the technological and pedagogical dimensions but also the socio-cultural factors that shape implementation. The findings offer valuable implications for teacher training, policy development, and digital tool design tailored to low-resource settings

Abstract

Kada Tominaa (Ethics Advice) is a distinctive form of Toraja oral literature expressed in ritual contexts, especially in Rambu Solo’ (funeral) and Rambu Tuka' (thanksgiving). It serves as both ritual poetry and a cultural medium that conveys ethical teachings, cosmological beliefs, and communal values across generations. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach to analyse the literary expressions of Kada Tominaa. Data were collected from ritual speeches delivered by traditional speakers (Tominaa) and supported by interpretations from community elders. The analysis focused on specialised vocabulary, metaphorical meanings, and sociocultural functions embedded in ritual discourse. The study reveals that Kada Tominaa employs specialised vocabulary rarely used in daily Toraja conversation, including Ombo’ (born), Kombong Mentolino (becoming human), Tangkean Suru’ (family prayers), and Tibaen Passoeanna (let him go there). These terms carry layered metaphorical meanings, symbolising the interconnectedness of life and death, human responsibility, communal solidarity, gratitude, leadership, and spiritual continuity. The vocabulary serves as a cultural repository, preserving ancestral wisdom while reinforcing Torajan identity and social cohesion. The findings highlight that Kada Tominaa is more than ceremonial speech; it is a vital medium of cultural continuity that integrates language, metaphor, and ritual performance. By embodying ethical principles and cosmological perspectives, Kada Tominaa sustains the Toraja worldview and ensures the transmission of traditions across generations.
