Abstract

This study focuses on the implementation of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in English learning to prepare students for the demands of Education 4.0, which aims to produce competent and high-quality human resources capable of performing effectively in the industrial world (Pohan, 2019). In today’s education, students are required to process broad information and develop understanding in various fields, including English. The research employed a qualitative descriptive method, which emphasizes describing phenomena using words rather than numbers. The study was conducted at SDN 1 Timpag. Based on the results, it was concluded that the HOTS learning indicators are developed comprehensively, encompassing six aspects: Creating, Evaluating, Analyzing, Applying, Remembering, and Understanding. However, there are areas for improvement in implementing HOTS in English learning, such as in storytelling planning, introducing animal objects and body anatomy, using simple greetings, and applying grammar.

Abstract

The brochure creation training as a marketing communication strategy at Pasar Badung aims to enhance traders' ability to promote their products and services through effective and attractive printed media. Brochures are an important communication tool in marketing, providing clear information and stimulating consumer interest. This training focuses on teaching graphic design and persuasive content writing, which not only highlights the uniqueness of the products but also attracts the target market, including both tourists and local communities. Through this training, traders at Pasar Badung are equipped with skills to create aesthetically pleasing, informative, and market-appropriate brochures. Additionally, participants are trained in selecting appropriate distribution channels, both physically at the market location and digitally via social media to expand marketing reach. The expected outcome of this training is to enhance the image of Pasar Badung as a unique and appealing shopping destination, while also introducing local products in a more professional manner. With well-designed brochures, Pasar Badung can more effectively attract visitors and increase transaction volumes, ultimately contributing to local economic growth and the tourism sector in Bali. This training is a strategic step in supporting the development of traditional markets as part of Bali's sustainable creative economy.

Abstract

This community service program aims to improve the basic Indonesian communication skills of a BIPA learner from South Korea, Jeung Min Yeoung, who has been residing in Bali for nine months. The training was designed using a tourism-based learning approach that integrates language practice into situational contexts, such as visits to local destinations, interactions with the community, and simulations of everyday conversations. This approach provides the learner with more natural language exposure and experiences relevant to daily life in Bali. The program included an initial language assessment, the development of communicative materials, intensive mentoring, and a progress evaluation. The results of the activity indicate an increase in the learner’s confidence and fluency in using basic expressions for asking questions, introducing oneself, shopping, and engaging in social interactions. This program is expected to serve as a model for tourism-based BIPA learning to support the development of communicative competence among foreign learners.

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted translation is increasingly used in tourism and hospitality education to help students produce English texts for international audiences. Previous research has mainly examined grammatical accuracy, fluency, lexical choice, and user perceptions, while the treatment of culture-specific meaning in tourism discourse has received less attention. This study examines the linguistic features and cultural representation found in Gemini-assisted English translations of Balinese tourism texts. It does not seek to establish Gemini’s effectiveness or improvement in students’ independent writing. Using a qualitative descriptive design, the study analyzed seven Indonesian-English text pairs purposively selected from a classroom dataset of twenty student texts, together with student reflections. The seven cases were chosen as information-rich examples representing ritual, agrarian heritage, religious practice, culinary culture, and local philosophy. Analysis was informed by Nababan et al.’s dimensions of accuracy, acceptability, and readability and Molina and Hurtado Albir’s translation techniques. Four main strategies were identified among seven focal culture-specific items: explanation (three items), retention (two items), semantic adaptation (one item), and generalization (one item). The English outputs generally displayed readable sentence organization and tourism-oriented lexical choices. However, because no independent student translation or control condition was available, these features cannot be interpreted as evidence of writing improvement. Textual comparison also showed that some local labels were retained, while others were replaced with broader descriptions. Such changes indicate differences in lexical specificity, but their effects on readers’ cultural understanding require further empirical validation. The findings support using Gemini as a classroom comparison and revision resource rather than as evidence of autonomous translation quality.
