Abstract

This study aims to compare the performance of two injection molding designs—Design A and Design B—for producing plastic hardness test specimens. Design A showed a fill time of 1.03 s and cooling quality covering 84.2% of the part, compared to 1.06 s and 72.4% for Design B. Design B, however, exhibited deflection of 0.96 mm versus 1.15 mm for Design A, and a maximum sink mark depth of 0.5687 mm versus 0.5773 mm. These characteristics in Design B support dimensional stability and limit visible defects, making it suitable for fabrication. Optimization strategies, such as adjustments to packing pressure, gate location, and the cooling system, are proposed to improve Design B's performance in terms of production efficiency and quality. The results indicate that, despite advantages in Design A, Design B offers a viable option for large-scale injection molding, balancing quality and operational efficiency.

Abstract

The hydroponic pilot project in the Batam State Polytechnic area was motivated by problems with economic conditions and declining health conditions during the Covid-19 pandemic. This project is expected to support the "growing your own food movement" in an effort to reduce unemployment, increase food security and a healthy lifestyle. The hydroponic method was chosen because it is very easy to do and does not require a large area of "‹"‹land. In this community service activity, a hydroponic plant building framework will be made as a prototype of an efficient and efficient hydroponic building so that it can be used by the wider community. This activity is also useful for applying design knowledge as one of the PbL activities carried out by CAD, CNC, CAM, and Fabrication Engineering courses in the Mechanical Engineering Department, so that it can become an arena for higher education participation to support people's lives. The method of implementing this community service activity is to make observations to find a suitable area to build a hydroponic plant house, then the results of the observations are poured in the form of a design by utilizing software so that the materials needed and the shape of the framework that is built can be known. The last activity is making a hydroponic plant place. This activity is planned to be carried out from April to November 2021. Based on the results of the evaluation of the service program questionnaire for product distribution, it is known that the majority of respondents are satisfied with the products produced.

Abstract

This community service initiative aims to enhance the skills of vocational school students in utilizing Laser cutting machines, serving as a platform for students in the Design and Visual Communication department of SMKN 9 Batam to fabricate products based on their own designs in preparation for the professional world. The participants involved in this initiative consist of 78 students from the aforementioned department. The community service program is structured through various stages, encompassing initiation, preparation, execution, activity review, and the compilation of a final report. Enthusiastically engaged, the participants, primarily from the Design and Visual Communication department, had previously focused their learning solely on the design phase. However, through this community service project, they actively participated in the fabrication process of designs they had created. Utilizing CAD applications, the designs were transformed into tangible products using acrylic as the raw material, ensuring that the resulting products align with the envisioned design. This initiative provides a valuable avenue for students to bridge the gap between design and fabrication, fostering practical skills crucial for their future endeavors in the workforce.

Abstract

This paper discusses in depth the implementation of the Village Community Empowerment Program (P2MD) carried out on Jemare Island. The main focus of this program is the application of appropriate technology, which includes public street lighting and a water pump system, both powered by solar panels. The main objective of this initiative is to improve the quality of lighting and the provision of clean water on the island, two important aspects that are greatly needed by the local residents. Through a series of intensive observations and discussions with the local residents, the community service team was able to identify and solve various problems faced by the residents. As a result of these efforts, four street lights have been successfully installed and operated, and the water pump system has been successfully connected to the water pump machine and water storage tank. It is hoped that this initiative can have a significant positive impact on the quality of life of the residents of Jemare Island, support their business activities and economy, and provide a solution to the uneven distribution of electricity by the state electricity company (PLN). This solution is practical because it utilizes renewable energy in the form of sunlight, which is abundantly available on Jemare Island.

Abstract

This paper provides a detailed investigation into the effects of Trioctyl Trimellitate (TOTM) plasticizer levels on the hardness of Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) materials. The study reveals an inverse correlation between the level of TOTM plasticizer and the hardness of PVC, with an increase in TOTM levels leading to a decrease in hardness. This trend is consistent across various PVC samples, despite minor variations. The role of plasticizers in determining the physical and mechanical properties of PVC is further explored, emphasizing their function in reducing PVC's crystallinity, thereby producing a clearer and more flexible material. This research contributes to the understanding of how plasticizers can be used to tailor the properties of PVC, leading to the development of two distinct types of PVC: Flexible PVC, which contains a plasticizer, and Rigid PVC, which does not. The findings underscore the importance of plasticizers in material design and engineering, offering valuable insights for future applications.

Abstract

This research aims to develop a Procedure Qualification Record (PQR) for Repair Through Thickness on S355 KT0 material using the GTAW method for the root, SAW for filler and capping. The welds were repaired using gouging and grinding before undergoing repair welding with the SMAW method. The study employed experimental methods with Non-Destructive and Destructive tests following AWS D1.1 and Client Specification MHK-COMP-SPE standards. The test results indicate defect-free welds that meet AWS D1.1 standards in terms of mechanical properties such as tensile strength, bending, impact, and hardness. The tensile strength values reached 609 MPa (longitudinal specimen) and 539 MPa and 540 MPa for transverse specimens. The lowest impact test value was 139J in the fusion line +2 mm repair to original welds area. The peak hardness test value was 240 VHN in the HAZ (repair to original weld) region. The test results were also used to formulate a PQR that aligns with specific requirements. This research is expected to provide guidance for performing repair welding on S355 KT0 material.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of machine availability on production output at PT XYZ. Data collection was conducted from January to March 2024, focusing on machine downtime, total operational hours, and weekly production output. The method used involves the calculation of Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF), Mean Time To Repair (MTTR), and availability, followed by a correlation analysis between availability and production output. The results show a strong correlation between availability and output, with a correlation value of 0.852. In Week 6 and Week 11, machine downtime caused availability to drop to 98.41% and 97.96%, respectively, which directly impacted production output. Based on these findings, it is recommended that PT XYZ improve preventive maintenance and minimize downtime to maintain optimal machine availability and maximize production output
