Abstract

This study examined the influence of animated video utilization as an instructional medium on enhancing elementary school students' critical thinking abilities in science education, specifically focusing on human body organs in sixth grade. Animated videos, which integrate visual elements, textual information, and audio components, are practical pedagogical tools that facilitate educators' more engaging and comprehensive content delivery. Critical thinking is conceptualized as a higher-order cognitive process involving systematically evaluating information, problem-solving, decision-making, and formulating reasoned judgments based on logical analysis and evidence-based arguments. The research employed a quasi-experimental methodology with a pretest-posttest control group design. The sample consisted of 46 sixth-grade students who were randomly assigned to an experimental group and a control group. Both groups were administered a pretest to establish baseline critical thinking abilities. The experimental group received instruction through animated video media, whereas the control group was taught using conventional instructional methods. A posttest was conducted following the intervention to assess the students' progress. Data obtained from the pretest and posttest were analyzed using an independent samples t-test, following preliminary tests for normality and homogeneity of variance. The analysis results demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in the critical thinking skills of students exposed to animated video instruction compared to those who received traditional teaching. These findings suggest that the integration of animated video media in science education can serve as an effective strategy to foster critical thinking development among elementary school students.

Abstract

Effectiveness of Project-Based Inquiry Learning in Developing HOTS-Based Scientific Literacy: Moderated by Science Process Skill. Objectives: This study examines three core questions: (1) whether the Project-Based Inquiry (PBI) model improves students’ HOTS scientific literacy, (2) whether students’ initial Science Process Skills (SPS) influence their outcomes, and (3) whether there is an interaction between the two. These variables were selected because HOTS-based scientific literacy and SPS are essential competencies for prospective elementary teachers. Methods: A quasi-experimental design was used with two naturally formed groups. The experimental group learned through the project-based inquiry model, while the control group used guided inquiry. Data were collected using a project assessment sheet and the HOTS scientific literacy test, with identical pre- and post-tests administered.  The data were analyzed using: 1) Normality and homogeneity test, 2) Paired sample t-test, 3) Independent sample t-test, and 4) Hypothesis testing was carried out using two-way ANOVA, where H₀ was rejected if the significance value was <0.05. Findings: The analysis for the learning model factor yielded a highly significant result (p = 0.000; < 0.05). The results show that the learning model had a significant effect on HOTS scientific literacy, with the PBI model outperforming guided inquiry (p = 0.000). SPS level did not produce a significant independent effect (p = 0.562), and no interaction was found between the learning model and SPS. These findings indicate that the PBI model is the primary factor driving students’ improvement. Conclusion: Overall, Project-Based Inquiry is an effective approach to strengthening HOTS scientific literacy among prospective elementary teachers. Although SPS levels did not independently influence outcomes, students across SPS levels still benefited from PBI. These findings offer theoretical insight into how inquiry–project learning supports higher-order reasoning and provide practical guidance for developing instructional designs that foster analytical and evidence-based thinking in teacher education programs. Keywords: project-based inquiry, guided inquiry, science process skill, hots, scientific literacy, science education.

Abstract

This research aimed to develop and evaluate Basic Science Concepts instructional materials integrating a project-based inquiry model (BAKDIPA) to improve among pre-service elementary teachers. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) design using the Plomp model, consisting of Investigation, Design, and Realization phases. The participants included 33 students in the experimental class and 35 students in the control class enrolled in a Basic Science Concepts course. Data were collected using validation sheets, SPS test instruments, and practicality questionnaires. Experts and practitioners assessed the validity of the developed product, while its practicality and effectiveness were examined through field implementation. The validation results revealed a high level of validity with overall mean scores of 4.10 for the Semester Learning Plan and 4.27 for instructional materials, categorized as “very valid”. Practicality assessment also indicated positive user responses, confirming that the material was feasible to implement. The effectiveness test using a paired t-test indicated a significant improvement in SPS, where the tcount (14.5) > ttable (2.87). The normalized gain analysis further showed an N-Gain of 0.813, categorized as medium effectiveness, while the distribution of SPS levels demonstrated that more students in the experimental class achieved high proficiency compared to the control class. In conclusion, the BAKDIPA instructional material is valid, practical, and effective for enhancing SPS in Basic Science learning for pre-service elementary teachers. This research provides a promising contribution toward strengthening inquiry-oriented science education in teacher preparation programs.
