Abstract

This study aimed to identify the Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria that cause subclinical mastitis in dairy goats in the Senduro sub-district of Lumajang regency, Indonesia. A total of 116 milk samples from 58 dairy goats were tested for the California Mastitis Test (CMT). CMT-positive samples were used for bacterial identification through phenotypic and genotypic analyses. Phenotypic analysis was conducted by culturing bacteria on natrium agar media and followed in selective media. The genotypic analysis employed a specific primer of S. aureus using the 23SrRNA gene and E. coli using the 16SrRNA gene as confirmation of the gold standart. The results of this study showed positive subclinical mastitis in dairy goat samples, which consisted of 21 samples of CMT 1 and a sample of CMT 2. Bacterial identification with phenotypic assays documented 16 samples having S. aureus and one sample having E. coli. The validated genotypic assays showed from 16 samples, validated 5 samples of S. aureus infection and one E. coli infection. In conclusion, bacterial identification of S. aureus and E. coli predominantly infects the SCM dairy goats in the Senduro sub-district as evidenced by the phenotypic analysis and followed by genotypic using the PCR method.

Abstract

Kata kunci: Bondowoso; sapi; pakan; fermentasi; kulit kopi Abstract The issue of feed availability is one of the major challenges faced by the beef cattle farming community in Bondowoso District, East Java. The cut-and-carry feed collection system becomes particularly difficult during the dry season. Most of the agricultural land in Bondowoso District is used for coffee plantations. However, the utilization of coffee husk waste produced by the local coffee industry remains suboptimal. Coffee husks contain nutrients that have the potential to be used as animal feed. Nevertheless, the presence of antinutritional factors and low digestibility limit their effectiveness as feed. This community service initiative aims to enhance farmers' skills in providing nutritionally rich beef cattle feed by utilizing coffee husk waste through solid-state fermentation technology. The program began with a socialization session on complete feed for beef cattle, followed by training on how to process feed from coffee husks, and concluded with monitoring the implementation of feed usage for livestock. The results of the service activities show that the farming community was highly enthusiastic about participating in all aspects of the program, including socialization, training, and monitoring. Beef cattle that were fed complete feed made from coffee husk waste processed using solid-state fermentation (SSF) technology for four months showed a higher body weight gain of 144 kg, compared to those fed unprocessed coffee husk waste, which gained only 120 kg. Keywords: Bondowoso; cattle; feed; fermentation; coffee husk.

Abstract

The role of Sidomukti Village as an agricultural and livestock center in Mayang District, Jember Regency creates obstacles, namely the lack of water when the dry season arrives, as a result of which farmers find it difficult to grow crops. This also has an impact on village farmers who use agricultural waste as animal feed. On the other hand, in the rainy season, the availability of agricultural waste as animal feed is very abundant, so it is necessary to utilize agricultural waste into alternative feed that has a longer shelf life through a fermentation process. The aim of empowering the community in Sidomukti Village through processing agricultural waste is to make fermented feed an alternative for breeders when the amount of feed is limited because of its long shelf life and increasing the appetite of livestock so that livestock become healthy. The partners of this program are breeders and farmers of Sidomukti Village through outreach and demonstration activities. The methods and stages carried out in this service activity include location observation, activity planning, outreach, practice/demonstration, and evaluation. There were 34 farmers as well as breeders and prospective breeders as participants in the socialization and demonstration. The fermented rice straw produced has a characteristic brownish color, a typical sour fermented aroma, and a slightly crumbly texture. Healthy livestock after providing fermented feed is one of the advantages of this program, namely not only as an alternative to the limited availability of animal feed, but also as an effort to maintain national food security.

Abstract

Breadfruit chips are an example of post-harvest processing of breadfruit yields. Generally, breadfruit is only sold in the market in its raw form which has many drawbacks such as low selling price, and short shelf life, the fruit is easily damaged during the transportation process until rot occurs in the fruit. Processing breadfruit into breadfruit chips can help increase the profit margins you get. Breadfruit also has a certain harvest period or what is known as a seasonal plant can quickly experience decay so that post-harvest processing is deemed necessary to keep the product able to have a long shelf life. Tenggir Village, Panji District, Situbondo Regency is one of the villages with a relatively large number of breadfruit trees. Villagers already have the desire and enthusiasm to use the breadfruit by processing it into breadfruit chips. There is a need for community service to empower village potential and design solutions that will be offered to the community. The purpose of this program is to provide alternative solutions for simple postharvest processing of agricultural products and increase the production capacity of the breadfruit chips home industry. The result of implementing this program is an increase in one of the breadfruit chip processing home industries with indicators of increasing production capacity and business turnover. Greater support in science and finance could be scaled up to support more targeted and significant business development.

Abstract

Sumberjambe District is one of the livestock centers in Jember Regency. The Raung Mandiri Livestock Group in Jambearum Village, Sumberjambe District, which was inaugurated at the end of 2023, already has 300 sheep. The problem faced is that members of the livestock group do not know alternative types of forage, how to propagate it and how to make silage. So far, food has been provided by searching for grass in the forest or in the fields every day, so it is hampered during the rainy season. The aim of this activity is to introduce alternative types of forage, cultivation methods and silage making in the context of initiating the Feed Bank. The methods used in carrying out activities include socialization and training, which involve participants taking an active role in activities that directly go into practice. The results of the activity showed that participants gain knowledge regarding alternative types of forage other than babandotan, elephant grass. Participants are able to reproduce, sow and plant forage seeds. Support for inputs for the initiation of the Feed Bank has been handed over in the form of chooper machines and forage seeds.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the prevalence of subclinical mastitis (SCM) and the correlation between CMT positive score, udder morphology and management practice in dairy goats in several regencies in East Java. The SCM identification was tested using the California Mastitis Test (CMT) method. The obtained data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively, and the correlation was determined using Kendall’s tau_b coefficient correlation method. The results showed the prevalence of SCM in Blitar, Lumajang, and Jember amounted to 19,35%, 0,86%, and 25%, respectively. The control management of observed dairy farms was relatively similar such as the milking frequency, feeding management, health control, and cage type. Milk production was moderately correlated with CMT (tb =-0.417) and low correlation with the udder shape (tb =1.51), side udder cross-section (tb =-0,293), teat angle of separation between teat (tb =0,204), and degree of udder separation (tb =0,128). The CMT also has low correlation with the BCS (tb =0,146), udder symmetry (tb =0,126), sided udder cross-section (tb =0,153). Then CMT also has a moderate correlation with housing type (tb =-0,380) and milking frequency (tb =0.365). In conclusion, the prevalence of SCM was relatively low to moderate and its correlation with udder morphology were low to moderate.
