Abstract

The existence of the indigenous community in Meukisi Village is becoming increasingly concerning, because in recent decades this community has become vulnerable to change. In fact, the values of local wisdom have been deeply rooted and traditional in the lives of their ancestors. The approach in this study is qualitative using the case study method. Meukisi traditional leaders became informants. The researcher used techniques such as in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation studies. Meanwhile, data analysis techniques were carried out through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, conclusion drawing, and verification. The research found that the indigenous people of Meukisi have adopted yau as a guideline for their attitudes and actions. Yau has become a guiding star for the Meukisi indigenous community. The Meukisi indigenous community maintains and preserves yau through guidance and habit formation within the family and policies from indigenous institutions to provide guidance for the younger generation in indigenous activities that take place once a year. It can be concluded that, fundamentally, the existence of local yau wisdom values is dynamic because it adapts to the changing times, as it is able to survive in the face of globalization and is used as a means of strengthening the identity of the Meukisi indigenous community.

Abstract

This research highlights the importance of implementing Karen Armstrong's compassion values at SMP Negeri 2 Sentani to support harmony in religious diversity. Compassion must be taught in a pluralist educational environment to form empathy and strong character from an early age. Given the limited understanding of pluralism among students and the lack of integration of compassion values in the curriculum, this study aims to explore effective strategies in instilling these values. The method used was qualitative research with data collection through observation and in-depth interviews. The results showed that the value of compassion could increase mutual respect and support among students, which is realized through collaborative activities such as religious holiday celebrations and interfaith prayers. Teachers are essential in internalizing compassion through narrative, discussion, and cooperative learning approaches. In conclusion, implementing the value of compassion at SMP Negeri 2 Sentani not only creates a harmonious and safe environment but also forms a young generation that can live peacefully amid religious differences, showing that differences are strengths that can be embraced together.

Abstract

Papua is one of the most heterogeneous regions in Indonesia, with more than 261 ethnic groups and over 250 local languages, making it a unique laboratory of multiculturalism. This diversity presents both opportunities for harmony and risks of tension, thus requiring wise strategies for management. The Community Service Program (PkM) entitled “Building Harmony in Diversity in Papua” at IAIN Fattahul Muluk Papua aimed to strengthen awareness of tolerance, intercultural dialogue, and respect for both customary and religious values. The program was carried out through interactive lectures and discussions facilitated by the Head of STAKPN Sentani. The results revealed that harmony is not merely the absence of conflict but a dynamic process nurtured through justice, solidarity, and respect for differences. Discussions highlighted the role of students as agents of tolerance and religious leaders as social mediators. In conclusion, harmony in Papua can only be achieved if indigenous traditions, religious values, and inclusive education are consistently practiced as foundations of unity in diversity.

Abstract

This study stems from the ecological tragedy in Sentani, where the 2019 flash flood became a concrete symbol of the consequences of massive deforestation in the Cycloop Mountains. This phenomenon highlights the urgency of expanding the concept of civic responsibility within the framework of Citizenship Education, shifting the focus from the relationship between citizens and the state to the relationship between citizens and nature. Using a descriptive qualitative approach grounded in post-positivism, this study explores the meaning, values, and religious practices of Christian and Islamic communities through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation. The results of the study show that both religions emphasize ecological responsibility: Islam through the concept of khalifah, which requires the preservation of the earth, and Christianity through the mandate of stewardship of creation. However, field findings reveal a paradox: theological awareness has been formed, but ecological practices are still limited to the private space of places of worship and have not been internalized in public spaces that continue to be plagued by waste, pollution, and forest destruction. The novelty of this research lies in offering a civic ecology framework as a new dimension in Civic Education, where environmental destruction is viewed not only as an ethical violation but also as a betrayal of citizenship. The implications of this research expand the horizon of PKn: from education on law and democracy to education on conservation, which places faith, public ethics, and ecological sustainability as the foundations of 21st-century citizenship. This research contributes to the conceptual and practical development of ecological citizenship in Indonesia.

Abstract

This research explores the local wisdom of Tiaytiki of the Yepase community in Jayapura Regency, Papua, as a form of citizen virtue in caring for and maintaining the sustainability of marine ecology. The ancestors have passed Tiaytiki down to the current community, which serves to preserve marine resources through zoning mechanisms, prohibitions on overexploitation, and the application of customary sanctions. Rooted in local beliefs and cosmology, Tiaytiki is not only a technical customary rule but also a substantial moral expression that emphasises collective responsibility, social solidarity, and spiritual awareness to live in harmony with nature. The research has been conducted qualitatively using the case study method. Research data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation. The analysis shows that there are five dimensions of civic virtue in Tiaytiki: spiritual, social, educational, marine-ecological, and institutional, which can serve as a model for caring for nature. This model not only serves as a mechanism for marine conservation but also as an educational tool to instil ecological character in the younger generation. The findings confirm that Tiaytiki is the intersection of civic ecology and civic virtue, and that it contributes to the development of contextualised civic education oriented towards environmental sustainability.
