Abstract

This study focuses on discussing the debate around the ideal format of the general election system in Indonesia, between open, closed, and mixed proportional systems. There are three research questions raised in this study, how is the application of a proportional system in the dynamics of elections in Indonesia? What are the weaknesses and strengths of implementing a proportional electoral system in Indonesia, both with open and closed systems? Is it possible for two electoral proportional systems (open and closed) to be mated into a new system, a mixed proportional system, for example? This research was conducted based on a qualitative approach. The sources and types of data used are secondary data, especially those from library materials such as books, journals, previous research results, and information media, both print and online. After analyzing field data based on the perspective of political sociology theory, this study found the finding that since it was first held in 1955, elections in Indonesia have used a proportional system to date, starting from a closed system and then moving on to an open system. At the practical level, both of these approaches have weaknesses. Closed proportionality tends to weaken people's participation, while open proportionality makes political parties not optimally carry out their party functions. In order to bridge this problem, a new approach is needed, one of which is to implement a mixed member proportional (MMP) system. In general, the idea of a mixed proportional system has advantages in terms of strengthening the function of political parties and the participation of the people to directly elect their representatives.

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of religious contestation among Muslim preachers in contemporary Indonesia. This study is a qualitative research and uses the digital ethnography (netnography) approach. This study uses two sources of data, namely, primary data, in the form of text, visuals, videos, and images obtained from several social media platforms, and secondary data in the form of literature data from previous studies. This study finds that the contestation of religious discourse among Muslim preachers in Indonesia, in particular that which have taken place on social media, has revolved around four major issues, namely, the controversies of “rendang babi” (pork rendang), “pawang hujan” (the rain shaman), the regulation of sound amplifiers in mosques and prayer spaces, and the art of wayang (puppetry). The religious contestation among Muslim preachers in Indonesia follows two patterns. The first is the substantive-inclusive religious narrative pattern, which emphasizes the core and principles of a problem. Next is the exclusive legal-formalist narrative, which tends to be normative and rigid. This last narrative is typically associated with Muslims preachers who have conservative views. Keyword : Religious contestation, social media, religious figure, Muslim preacher.

Abstract

This study aims to conduct an in-depth analysis of the emergence of da'wah using new media (social media) in Indonesia and its role in producing a new popular Islamic culture among millennial preachers in Indonesia. Methodologically, this study used qualitative research with a netnographic approach. Two types of data sources, primary and secondary, were used, taken from the 2015-2023 period. This study found two findings after analyzing the field data. First, the phenomenon of da'wah conducted by Hanan Attaki and Felix Siauw in the new media space, especially through the Instagram platform, creates a new popular Islamic culture involving netizens in consuming religious information. Netizens tend to be exposed to the glittering flood of information that can shift their conventional religious understanding and faith.  Second, at certain levels, the contemporary da'wah model shown by Hanan Attaki and Felix Siauw can represent the presence and existence of a new popular Islamic culture in Indonesia. This is because the contemporary style shown by Hanan Attaki and Felix Siauw, in many of their da'wah activities, contains elements of mass culture and the new media industry in the form of visualization and commodification of religious dimensions, values, and meanings

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of Islamic legal pluralism in the system and practice of determining inheritance rights among the local Madurese Muslim community, by taking a case study in Rubaru District, Sumenep Regency. This study is a field study conducted based on qualitative research. After analyzing field data, this research found two important findings; First, the distribution of community inheritance in Banasare and Mandala villages is in accordance with KHI and Islamic law, because customary law was abolished after Islamization, thus affecting the community's hereditary beliefs and practices, as well as cooperation between Islamic culture and religion; Second, according to customary law the inheritance system among the local Muslim community in Rubaru District, Sumenep is as follows; a) Inherited to those who stay and not inherited to those who migrate as is the case in Basoka Village; b) Given entirely to men, because boys have a big responsibility in life and supporting their wives, as is the case in Karangnangka village; c) given entirely to women such as in Tambaksari village because the traditional inheritance of Rubaru District follows the individual inheritance system because when the property is distributed it can be divided among the heirs so that it is included in the parental kinship system in which descendants who come from the genealogy live parent. Abstract

This study examines the massive use of social media, its role, and its influence on splitting religious authority among internal Muslims in contemporary Indonesia. There are two research questions raised in this study: how is the existence and reality of the popularity of Indonesian Muslims amid the rapid development of social media? How does religious authority within Indonesian Muslims experience fragmentation and the massive use of social media? This study is a netnographic research based on qualitative research. Two types and sources of data are used: primary data in the form of text, visual videos, and images obtained from several social media, especially Instagram and YouTube. In addition, there is also secondary data in the form of statistical data and literature. After analysing field data based on the perspective of Max Weber’s authority theory, this study found that the massive use of social media among Indonesian Muslims today has triggered the birth of various new religious realities, one of which is the division of religious authority. In Indonesia, this fragmentation is marked by the weakening of the existence and influence of earlier Islamic clergy groups and, simultaneously, the emergence of contemporary clergy members with stronger allure and influence. The latter are popular as millennial ustadz, have a populist style, and are known to be quite active in campaigning for religious activities on online-based social media channels.

Abstract

This study examines the resistance behavior of conservative Islamic organizations to regional tourism development in Madura, especially entertainment-based tourism. There are three research questions in this study: how is the reality of conservative Islamic organizations in Madura to the religious dynamics of the local community? How is the existence of conservative Islamic organizations to the dynamics of tourism development in Madura? How is the resistance of conservative Islamic organizations towards tourism development in Madura? Qualitative data were collected through observation, interview, and literatures study. The findings show: First, the conservativism values of Islamic organizations in Madura were born and spread widely from local traditions and religions; Second, the tradition of conservatism of Islamic organizations in Madura seen in several Islamic organizations, mainly right-wing Islamic organizations such as AUMA, FKM, and GUIP; Third, the conservatism of Islamic organizations in Madura is related to their resistant behavior towards tourism development in Madura, which reflect in their thinking and religious paradigms which tend to be traditionalist, puritanical, and reactionary. They use anarchism approaches that lead to violence, for instance burning the Bukit Bintang tourist site in Pamekasan Regency.

Abstract

This article discusses the notions of conservatism and religious moderatism through case studies of two contemporary Islamic organizations in Madura, Indonesia, namely Forum Kiai Muda Madura (FKM) and the Gerakan Santri-Pelajar Rahmatan Lil'alamin (GESPER) in Madura, Indonesia. These two mass organizations are part of the contemporary religious reality that significantly influences the religious dynamics of the Madurese community in Indonesia. This article uses qualitative research methods and Michel Foucault's theory of power relations. This study finds three findings. First, FKM and GESPER are local Islamic organizations in Madura that were both born and driven by a pesantren community consisting of Kiai, Lora, and santri. Second, based on its understanding and thoughts, the Islamic mass organization FKM's conservative religious view tends to be textual and exclusive. This mass organization is filled by the pesantren community outside the organizational structure of Nahdhlatul Ulama (NU), but culturally identify as adherents of NU. Meanwhile, the Islamic mass organization GESPER is an Islamic group that puts forward the values of moderation and tends to be dynamic and inclusive. Included in this line are the Islamic boarding schools, which are active in the organizational structure of NU in Madura. Third, although both were born in Islamic boarding schools, the two are often involved in friction due to differences in addressing contemporary Islamic social issues. This friction includes socio-religious issues that are thought-provoking, such as the discourse of Islam Nusantara, and practical socio-religious issues that are related to political themes, both at local and national levels
