Abstract

Maritime English is recognized as the primary language of communication at sea, making its mastery crucial for cadets in maritime vocational education. While previous studies on technology-enhanced learning have explored general multimedia platforms and language tools, limited research has addressed applications specifically designed for VHF communication. This study developed and evaluated a web-based vocabulary application built with PHP, integrating situational dialogues aligned with the fourth-semester syllabus of the Ship Operation Engineering Technology program. A quantitative approach was employed by distributing questionnaires to 50 cadets to examine the application’s accessibility, usability, and effectiveness. The results showed that the application functioned well on both personal computers and smartphones, and cadets perceived it as engaging, user-friendly, syllabus-oriented, and beneficial for improving their Maritime English speaking skills. The study contributes novelty through the design and initial validation of a specialized VHF-focused web application, filling a gap left by prior research that emphasized more general digital learning platforms. Meskipun studi-studi sebelumnya tentang pembelajaran berbasis teknologi telah mengeksplorasi platform multimedia umum dan perangkat bahasa, penelitian yang membahas aplikasi yang dirancang khusus untuk komunikasi VHF masih terbatas. Studi ini mengembangkan dan mengevaluasi aplikasi kosakata berbasis web yang dibangun dengan PHP, mengintegrasikan dialog situasional yang selaras dengan silabus semester keempat program Teknologi Rekayasa Operasi Kapal. Pendekatan kuantitatif digunakan dengan mendistribusikan kuesioner kepada 50 kadet untuk memeriksa aksesibilitas, kegunaan, dan efektivitas aplikasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa aplikasi tersebut berfungsi dengan baik di komputer pribadi maupun ponsel pintar, dan para kadet menganggapnya menarik, ramah pengguna, berorientasi pada silabus, dan bermanfaat untuk meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara Bahasa Inggris Maritim mereka. Studi ini memberikan kontribusi kebaruan melalui desain dan validasi awal aplikasi web khusus yang berfokus pada VHF, mengisi celah yang ditinggalkan oleh penelitian sebelumnya yang menekankan platform pembelajaran digital yang lebih umum.

Abstract

This research investigated the impact of utilizing ChatGPT, an advanced artificial intelligence language model, on improving maritime English-speaking skills among students at a maritime polytechnic in Indonesia. Effective communication in maritime operations is critical for maintaining safety, preventing misunderstandings, and ensuring efficient coordination among multinational crew members. However, many maritime students face challenges in attaining adequate English-speaking proficiency necessary for these operations. This study adopted a classroom action research (CAR) design involving 69 students over two instructional cycles. Data collection methods included pretests and post-tests to quantitatively measured speaking performance, alongside questionnaires to gather qualitative insights into students’ perceptions of the learning process and their engagement. Quantitative data were analyzed using paired sample t-tests in SPSS 22, revealing statistically significant improvements in key areas such as vocabulary use, grammatical accuracy, and overall fluency after the introduction of ChatGPT-assisted learning activities. Additionally, qualitative findings from questionnaires indicated enhanced student confidence, motivation, and active participation in speaking tasks, suggesting positive attitudes toward this AI-supported learning approach. The study highlighted the potential of integrating ChatGPT as a supplementary instructional tool within maritime English curricula to support language acquisition more effectively. By fostering maritime English-speaking competence through innovative technology integration, this approach contributed to better preparation of students for real-world communication demands in the maritime industry. Ultimately, the findings demonstrated that ChatGPT can serve as a valuable resource for language instructors, promoting more engaging, interactive, and productive learning environments that align with the operational needs of global maritime professionals.

Abstract

Nautical students are required to have communicative competence in English that will be beneficial for their future careers. However, the teaching and learning implemented remain insufficient in terms of sources, learning topics, and learning materials. Therefore, the present study aims to investigate teacher’s and students’ preferences in teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and elaborate the learning needs. This study utilizes a mix-methods approach which involves fifty-three nautical students and an ESP teacher at a maritime polytechnic located in East Java. The needs analysis was conducted by distributing online questionnaires containing three sections, such as (1) students’ current level of English competency, (2) skills priorities, and (3) learning topics needs. The semi-structured interview was conducted virtually with the teacher. The results of the questionnaire and interview were synthesized and summarized. The findings demonstrate that students’ English proficiency is at beginner to low intermediate level. Furthermore, speaking is stated as the most imperative skill among the students. However, in order to maximize speaking ability, the development of listening topics and sources is required. In addition, some developments for other skills are also required due to the inadequacy and unavailability of learning topics in the syllabus. Future research is worth conducting aiming at developing the ESP syllabus for Nautical students. Kesesuaian materi pembelajaran bahasa Inggris untuk mahasiswa pelayaran Siswa pelayaran dituntut untuk memiliki kompetensi komunikatif dalam bahasa Inggris yang akan bermanfaat untuk karir mereka di masa depan. Namun, pembelajaran yang dilaksanakan masih belum memadai dari segi sumber dan bahan ajar. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki preferensi guru dan siswa dalam mengajar English for Specific Purposes (ESP) dan mengelaborasi kebutuhan pembelajaran. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan metode campuran yang melibatkan lima puluh tiga mahasiswa pelayaran dan seorang guru ESP di sebuah politeknik pelayaran yang terletak di Jawa Timur. Analisis kebutuhan dilakukan dengan membagikan kuesioner online yang berisi tiga bagian, yaitu (1) tingkat kompetensi bahasa Inggris siswa saat ini, (2) prioritas keterampilan, dan (3) kebutuhan materi pembelajaran. Wawancara semi-terstruktur dilakukan secara daring dengan guru. Hasil kuesioner dan wawancara disintesis dan dirangkum. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa kecakapan bahasa Inggris siswa berada pada tingkat pemula hingga menengah rendah. Selanjutnya, berbicara dinyatakan sebagai keterampilan yang paling penting di kalangan siswa. Namun, untuk memaksimalkan kemampuan berbicara, diperlukan pengembangan bahan dan sumber menyimak. Selain itu, beberapa pengembangan keterampilan lain juga diperlukan karena ketidakcukupan dan tidak tersedianya topik dan materi dalam silabus. Penelitian di masa depan perlu dilakukan dengan tujuan mengembangkan silabus ESP untuk siswa pelayaran.

Abstract

The Main Mover Diesel Engine or Main Engine on a ship is the main device responsible for moving the ship forward and backward. The diesel engine fuel system, which includes the Bosch Pump, is a critical component in maintaining the engine's performance by providing the fuel necessary for combustion and propulsion of the vessel. The injector, which is used to spray fuel into the engine cylinder, is an important part of the system that supports the efficient combustion process in the main engine. The method used is a quantitative method which includes the collection and analysis of numerical data. By conducting surveys, experiments, or secondary data analysis, researchers can find patterns or generalizations in a larger population. By using quantitative methods, it will be possible to determine the cause of the decrease in Bosch pump pressure on the ship MV.Tanto Bersinar. The analysis of running hoaurs of puncture valve on the fuel injection pump for cylinder 1-8 demonstrates that the wear of puncture valve especially in cylinder 2 with 4.970 hours approaching the planned maintenance system (PMS )limit of 5.000 hours significantly affects injection pressure stability ,combustion,quality ,and main engine officiency ,which can be restored throngh critical component replacement,inspections close to PMS and injection pump recalibration.

Abstract

: Air compressors serve as vital auxiliary engines on ships for starting main engines and operating valves, yet manual monitoring leads to inefficiencies and frequent failures, contributing to 20% of machinery downtimes globally. This study aims to design and build a prototype air compressor with ESP32-based microcontroller monitoring system for real-time electrical parameter tracking. Employing an experimental prototype development design, the research utilized laboratory-scale prototype as subject, with hardware including PZEM-004T sensor, LCD I2C, and Blynk app; data analyzed via comparative quantitative measurements against standard multimeter for accuracy assessment. Results demonstrate 100% consistency in voltage (230V), current (6.1A), power (1015W), and frequency (50Hz) readings across LCD and remote app during static/dynamic tests. In conclusion, the prototype enhances predictive maintenance and educational training for maritime students, although field testing in harsh conditions is recommended

Abstract

Overheating in the ship's main engine, often caused by suboptimal cooling and lubrication systems, poses a high risk to performance and safety. This study aims to design and build an Arduino-based detector prototype. Using a research and development (R&D) method with an experimental approach, the population of b diesel at the Surabaya Maritime Polytechnic, a purposive sample of one Mitsubishi S6B3-MPTA unit. Instruments include Arduino Uno, thermocouple and SW200D sensors, LCD, buzzer, and Wemos D1 Mini integrated with Blynk; quantitative descriptive data analysis through Arduino IDE, comparing readings with a thermogun and connectivity tests. The results show high accuracy of temperature detection (dynamic trend 30.75-34°C), vibration (2-7 mm/s), and IoT range up to 185 m non-obstacle. In conclusion, the prototype effectively provides real-time warnings, improving preventive maintenance.
