Abstract

Abstract

Indonesia is widely recognized as a multicultural society in which religious and cultural diversity shapes everyday social relations. Medan City, a major urban center in North Sumatra, provides a concrete context for examining how diversity is nurtured and maintained through local cultural practices. This article analyzes the construction of relations between religion and local culture in Medan, focusing on how these relations contribute to social harmony in a plural urban setting. The study employs a qualitative descriptive-analytical method based on literature review, policy documents, and relevant previous studies. The findings indicate that religious diversity—encompassing Islam, Protestantism, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism—intersects with ethnic plurality in daily social practices such as communal celebrations, traditional rituals, and economic cooperation. These interactions demonstrate that local culture functions as a practical mechanism for fostering tolerance, mutual respect, national commitment, and non-violence. Despite ongoing challenges related to identity politics and disputes over houses of worship, the article argues that local cultural practices play a mediating role in sustaining interreligious harmony. This study contributes to urban pluralism scholarship by emphasizing diversity as a lived and negotiated process rooted in local cultural dynamics.

Abstract

This study examines the dynamics of political communication between national political parties and local political parties in Southwest Aceh Regency (Kabupaten Aceh Barat Daya) and South Aceh Regency (Kabupaten Aceh Selatan) leading up to the 2024 Legislative Election. The research employs a qualitative methodology, which seeks to uncover issues, conditions, or events (fact-finding) experienced by the research subjects, including behaviors, perceptions, motivations, and actions holistically. These findings are then described in words and language within a specific natural context using various natural methods. The study aims to describe the dynamics of political communication between national and local political parties, analyze the implications of these dynamics, formulate the concept of Islamic political communication as a strategy to strengthen political communication between national and local parties, and identify barriers to implementing Islamic political communication as a strategy in Abdiya and South Aceh regencies leading up to the 2024 Legislative Election. The research findings reveal: First, the dynamics of political communication between national and local parties in Abdiya and South Aceh leading up to the 2024 Legislative Election are quite dynamic, characterized by the development of both effective and ineffective political communication. If not managed properly, ineffective political communication is likely to become dominant. Second, the implications of political communication between national and local parties in Abdiya and South Aceh leading up to the 2024 Legislative Election are also dynamic, with various forms of political messages impacting the audience and becoming targets for other political media/channels. There are three types of communication effects: cognitive, affective, and behavioral, all of which are significantly observed in Aceh Abdya and South Aceh. Third, Islamic political communication as a strategy to strengthen effective political communication by national and local parties in Abdiya and South Aceh leading up to the 2024 Legislative Election is seen as a suitable solution, although it requires a long process.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the political communication of H. Syamsul Arifin, SE in building a positive image among cross-ethnic communities in North Sumatra. As a region with a high degree of ethnic diversity, politics in North Sumatra requires an inclusive communication approach capable of embracing various community groups. Within this context, H. Syamsul Arifin is recognized as a political figure who successfully developed a leadership image accepted by multiple ethnic groups, earning him the title Friend of All Ethnicities. This makes it compelling to further examine the political communication strategies he employed. The study adopts a qualitative approach using case study and discourse analysis methods, focusing on Syamsul Arifin’s political communication in diverse settings, including mass media, direct interaction with the public, and political campaigns. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, document analysis, and observation. The findings indicate that the success of Syamsul Arifin’s political communication was rooted in his ability to build interpersonal communication, sensitivity to local culture, and dialogical approaches that prioritized feedback from the community. His strategies reflect the two-way symmetrical communication model (James Grunig) and high-context communication (Edward T. Hall), which highlight the importance of cultural context in delivering political messages. Communication barriers such as ethnic differences, social stereotypes, and perception gaps were effectively addressed through participatory approaches, the use of local cultural symbols, and the involvement of community leaders. Indicators of success include cross-ethnic acceptance, increased political participation, and the establishment of public trust in his leadership. These findings reinforce the importance of culture-based political communication in plural societies.
