Abstract

This study aims to document and analyze the form of woven fabric motifs produced in Sula'a Weaving Village, with the goal of contributing to the development of local culture-based art education. The study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with direct observation methods, in-depth interviews, and visual documentation. The analysis technique involves data reduction, data presentation in narrative and visualization forms, and drawing conclusions based on field findings. The study's findings show that geometric patterns and plant and animal patterns on woven fabrics have meanings that are related to tradition and social class. These meanings are aesthetic, educational, and symbolic. Motifs such as horizontal lines and checkered patterns reflect harmony, loyalty, responsibility, and relationships with nature. This research also found that traditional patterns have changed over time to use geometric ideas like shifting, mirroring, and rotation to make them look better without losing the original culture's features. It also suggests ways to bring back traditions by using these patterns in the creative and tourism industries. The study's findings show that woven fabrics should be kept as a cultural heritage and that people should value local cultural goods more, even as they become more modern. This can help with the growth of arts education that is based on local culture. In addition, the results of this study can be a medium for learning, local wisdom, and character building of students in schools.

Abstract

This study investigates how preservice English teachers at Universitas Negeri Makassar understand and implement the principles of the Merdeka Curriculum within the “Pedagogy of Writing” course. As a curriculum reform aimed at promoting student-centered, project-based learning and the development of 21st-century competencies, the Merdeka Curriculum requires significant pedagogical shifts, especially in writing instruction. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed to explore students’ conceptual and practical engagement with the curriculum. The participants included 210 fifth-semester students enrolled in the course during the 2022/2023 academic year. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis, focusing on three representative lesson plans. Thematic analysis revealed that while students generally grasped key curriculum concepts such as learner autonomy and the Profil Pelajar Pancasila, their classroom implementation varied widely. Common challenges included limited instructional resources, time constraints during school-based practicums, and difficulties in aligning creative writing tasks with standardized assessments. Despite these obstacles, many students demonstrated innovation in instructional design and a willingness to reflect critically on their teaching practices. The findings highlight the need for more structured pedagogical support within teacher education programs to strengthen curriculum understanding and implementation. This study contributes to the growing literature on curriculum transformation in Indonesian higher education and offers insights for policymakers and curriculum developers seeking to enhance teacher preparation for 21st-century education.

Abstract

As aspiring educators, pre-service students in the PPG Arts and Culture Program play a pivotal role in sustaining and innovating local artistic traditions. Yet, gaps in both theoretical and practical mastery remain evident. To bridge this divide, a specialized training program was implemented to elevate the professional expertise of PPG UNM students in local artistic creation—spanning dance, theater, and two- and three-dimensional visual arts. Post-intervention assessments revealed marked advancements in participants’ conceptual grasp and technical execution across diverse local art forms. Notably, the trainees exhibited an enhanced ability to produce works deeply rooted in local aesthetics, whether through visual compositions or performative expressions in dance and theater. This initiative underscores the transformative potential of structured pedagogy in fostering culturally anchored artistic proficiency among future arts educators.
