Abstract

This research investigates the phenomenon of code-mixing and code-switching used by a teacher and fourth-semester students in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) speaking class at a university in Bandung. The study is grounded in the fact that while learning a new language influences communication choices, excessive reliance on code-switching (CS) and code-mixing (CM) may hinder the mastery of English grammatical rules. This study aims to identify the specific types of CS and CM that occur during classroom interactions. Using a descriptive qualitative case study design, data were collected through online observations via Zoom meetings and audio recordings, which were then transcribed and analyzed using Poplack’s (1980) and Muysken’s (2004) frameworks. The results reveal that only specific types of linguistic shifts occurred: intra-sentential and inter-sentential switching were the primary forms of CS used by the teacher to ensure student understanding. Meanwhile, CM was manifested through insertion—such as adding Indonesian affixes to English base words—and alternation. The findings and discussion highlight that students frequently reverted to Indonesian or their mother tongue during group discussions due to vocabulary limitations and a lack of direct teacher monitoring. The study concludes that while these phenomena facilitate material comprehension, teachers should implement strategic rules to limit dependency on non-English codes to optimize students' speaking proficiency.

Abstract

With the establishment of the Merdeka Curriculum, education in Indonesia is stepping into a new chapter, aiming to place students at the center of the learning process, encourage differentiated instruction, and strengthen essential 21st-century skills. Despite its promising vision, most existing studies focus mainly on descriptive accounts of policy implementation, offering little empirical evidence on how curriculum implementation relates to learning outcomes remains limited, particularly in senior high school English classes. This study addresses that gap by applying the CIPP evaluation model to explore the relationships among Context, Input, Process, and Product components. Using a mixed-methods approach, data were collected from students and teachers in four senior high schools in Kabupaten Bandung through a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The results indicate that, among the three components, process exhibits the strongest relationship with product, followed by input and context. Qualitative findings further indicated that effective classroom practices play a central role in supporting student learning. Overall, the results suggest that the successful implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum in English classes is closely related to supportive learning environments, adequate instructional resources, and well-managed teaching–learning processes.

Abstract

Reading Comprehension is the skill or ability to comprehend what is read. When reading, students sometimes have difficulty understanding what the author is conveying from a text that has been prepared. Through this ability, a person can understand what the author means, then construct their own meaning and understanding of the reading. For example, someone reading an article online about the health benefits of drinking coconut water. In the article, the reader encounters several difficult-to-understand texts. This could be new vocabulary or the meaning behind the text. Through reading comprehension, the reader can gradually understand it well and rewrite the article according to their understanding. As previously mentioned.

Abstract

in recent years, there has been a significant decline in the use of the Javanese language, particularly among younger generations living in urban areas. This phenomenon is influenced by various factors, such as the dominance of the Indonesian language in the education system and media, the impact of social environments, and the decreasing role of families in transmitting local languages. This study aims to examine the language shift from Javanese to Indonesian and its impact on the linguistic identity of young people. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, involving ten participants aged 20–25 years residing in Central Java and the Special Region of Yogyakarta. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and documentation, then analyzed thematically to identify patterns of language use and shifts in linguistic identity. The findings indicate that most participants prefer using Indonesian because it is perceived as more practical, modern, and suitable for cross-cultural communication. Javanese is still used, but it is limited to specific contexts, such as interactions with parents or traditional events. Nevertheless, participants continue to show emotional attachment to their Javanese identity. Their linguistic identity is flexible and constantly negotiated depending on the social context. This study concludes that language shift is a complex phenomenon that involves not only linguistic aspects but also reflects changing values, attitudes, and identities within society.
