Abstract

Purpose -The digital era poses both challenges and opportunities for Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) in Indonesia. This study investigates the strategic role of pesantren in fostering digital literacy to shape a generation of Muslims who are both critical and productive. The research aims to analyze how digital literacy is integrated into pesantren education and the strategies employed to align technological use with Islamic ethical values. Methods -Adopting a qualitative library research method, the study draws from a wide range of primary and secondary sources, including academic literature and documented case studies. Findings –The findings reveal several key strategies: integration of digital subjects into curricula, training and workshops for students and teachers, policy reinforcement on technology use, ethical digital education, and collaboration with external institutions. Research implications / limitations -Case studies from pesantren such as Nurul Jadid, Darunnajah, and Al-Muayyad demonstrate successful implementations through e-learning platforms, digital preaching programs, and content creation training. Despite notable challenges such as limited infrastructure, cultural resistance, and a lack of digital competence among educators the study affirms the potential of pesantren to serve as centers of ethical digital literacy. Originality -The research contributes new insights by highlighting a rarely explored intersection between Islamic education and digital transformation, thus offering a valuable model for integrating religious values with technological advancement in education.

Abstract

The highest authority in an Islamic boarding school organization is the leadership or commonly called Kiai. There are various types of Kiai leadership, including charismatic, transformational and autocratic. The object of this research is the Rafah Islamic Boarding School, where the Kiai at this object plays a role as a central figure in building the Islamic boarding school's organizational culture of discipline. The research method used was descriptive qualitative by conducting observations, interviews and documentation of a number of informants including the Education Bureau, the student organization and several other students outside the organization. The research results obtained were that Kiai Rafah agreed to the rules and prohibitions in student discipline by positioning himself as that party, such as the obligation to pray in congregation at the mosque. When implementing these rules, he also set an example by carrying out this habit at all times, namely praying in congregation. Likewise with other rules. This habit is what generates a culture of discipline among organizational members in the Islamic boarding school, both the Islamic boarding school management and the Islamic boarding school organization. Apart from being an exemplary example in implementing discipline, Kiai Pondok Pesantren Rafah's other roles are as an educator, as a religious leader, as a social servant, as a caregiver and guide, and as a Koran teacher. Kiai Pondok Pesantren Rafah also involved members of the Islamic boarding school organization in deliberations with considerations for the future progress of the Islamic Boarding School, he listened to suggestions from the staff under him. If the suggestion is good for the Islamic boarding school, then he will consider the suggestions from his subordinates. He did this solely to achieve what had been the goal of this Pondok since its inception.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the implementation of Senge’s Learning Organisation model within the context of Islamic boarding school (pesantren) management, with a specific focus on Pondok Pesantren Darunnajah Jakarta. Employing a qualitative case study methodology, data were collected through in-depth interviews with key informants, including institutional leaders, senior teachers, and administrators, supplemented by participant observation and document analysis over six months. The findings reveal that Darunnajah has effectively operationalised the five subsystems of Marquardt’s learning organisation framework: learning dynamics, organisational transformation, people empowerment, knowledge management, and technology application, while preserving its core Islamic identity. The pesantren demonstrates continuous learning through formal and non-formal pedagogical approaches, systematic organisational transformation from a traditional to a modern governance structure, strategic human resource empowerment through professional development and international partnerships, knowledge management through structured information dissemination, and technology integration across all educational levels. Currently operating 23 branch campuses across Indonesia, Darunnajah exemplifies how learning organisation principles can drive sustainable institutional expansion. The study concludes that the successful synthesis of Western organisational learning theory with Islamic educational philosophy at Darunnajah provides a replicable model for pesantren modernisation. This research contributes to the literature by bridging the gap between learning organisation theory developed in corporate settings and its application in faith-based educational institutions.
