Abstract

This qualitative study examines ninth-grade students’ perspectives on the Competence and Professionalism of English teachers at SMP WR. Supratman 1 Medan during the 2024/2025 academic year. The study addresses three central questions: (1) How do students perceive professional and competent English teachers? (2) How are these traits demonstrated in teachers’ practices? (3) What are the reasons behind these perceptions? The primary data collection method involves administering surveys and questionnaires, consisting of both closed-ended and open-ended questions. Preliminary thematic anaylsis reveals that students highly value teachers’ pedagogical adaptibility and emotional support, while also recognizing the influence of contextual factors, such as the classroom environment, on their perceptions. This study highlights the dynamic interaction between teacher competence and student learning experiences, providing recommendations for teacher training programs to better meet the needs of learners.

Abstract

This study addresses how biotic ecolexical items are represented in the Gotilon ceremony discourse of the HKBP Pardomuan Congregation and how these linguistic elements reflect ecological meanings, cultural values, and theological perspectives toward nature. The study aims to: 1) Identify biotic ecolexical items related to living beings in the Gotilon ritual discourse, 2) Interpret their ecological significance from an ecolinguistic perspective, and 3) Explain their functions within the ceremonial and cultural context. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method grounded in Arran Stibbe’s ecolinguistic framework. Data were collected through Participant observation of the Gotilon ceremony, documentation of ritual texts, in-depth interviews with church members and community elders. Data analysis focuses on identifying, classifying, and interpreting ecolexical items within their ecological and cultural contexts. The findings reveal a diverse range of biotic ecolexical items referring to plants, animals, and agricultural products, such as rice, buffalo, chicken, banyan tree, and mango tree. These lexical items function beyond literal meanings and carry deeper ecological and symbolic significance. They represent ecological values and collective memory, reflect theological beliefs about nature as a divine gift, serve as symbols of gratitude and prosperity, act as sacrificial elements in ritual practices, and function as a bridge connecting humans, nature, and God. Overall, the Gotilon ceremonial discourse reflects an integrated ecological worldview combining spirituality, agricultural traditions, and environmental responsibility.

Abstract

The low mastery of English vocabulary among ninth-grade students at SMP Negeri 16 Medan became the main problem in this study, as reflected in the students’ difficulties in understanding, remembering, and using vocabulary appropriately in communication contexts. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Duolingo application in improving students’ vocabulary ability. This study employed a quantitative method, with data collected through a pre-test and a post-test, which were then analyzed using SPSS through a paired-samples t-test. The results showed that the students’ mean score increased from 59.87 on the pre-test to 72.57 on the post-test, with a significance value of 0.000, which was lower than 0.05. These findings indicate that the use of the Duolingo application had a significant effect on improving the students’ mastery of English vocabulary. Thus, this study confirms that the use of digital learning media can be an effective alternative for supporting the improvement of students’ vocabulary ability in English language learning.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine student teachers’ and teacher educators’ perceptions of an effective English teacher in terms of content, pedagogical, and personal knowledge in the English study program at Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI). To achieve this objective, this study was designed as a mixed-methods study. To achieve this objective, this study was designed using a mixed method to look for the perceptions of 82 student teachers and 10 teacher educators. Data were collected through a 36-item Likert-type questionnaire and follow-up interviews. The results indicate that both groups agree that combining all the components is important for an effective teacher. Comparing both groups’ perceptions, the results showed a statistically significant difference (p ≤ 0.05) for 11 out of 36 items. It was found that student teachers place higher importance on some effective attributes than teacher educators do and vice versa. Additionally, the study found that pedagogical and personal knowledge was equally, if not more, important than content knowledge in defining an effective English teacher. This study highlights the significance of balancing content, pedagogical, and personal knowledge in teacher effectiveness, particularly in the EFL context of Indonesia, and discusses its pedagogical implications and limitations. This study was small due to a lack of participants. Future research should include more participants for comparison.
