Abstract

Increasing bacterial resistance to antibiotics has become a serious threat to global public health. In this context, this study aims to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPS) synthesized using the sol-gel method. TiO2 NPS samples were prepared and characterized for morphology via field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method was used to test the antimicrobial activity of TiO2 NPS against Gram positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, Gram negative bacteria Escherichia coli, and pathogenic fungus Aspergillus penicillioides. The results showed that TiO2 NPS effectively inhibited the growth of microorganisms, with significant inhibition zones especially against fungi. The antimicrobial mechanism of TiO2 NPS involves the formation of hydroxyl radicals and superoxide ions that damage the cell membrane of microorganisms. The implications of this study are the development of potential antimicrobial nanomaterials for biomedical and environmental applications, as well as the importance of considering the physical and chemical properties of TiO2 NPS in designing effective infection treatment strategies.

Abstract

Radar-absorbent materials (RAMs) have become essential technologies in fields that require them, such as the military. Their working principle is that they absorb electromagnetic waves and prevent their reflection. In developing the manufacturing of RAMs, high-performance materials are needed for effective use as RAMs. In general, RAMs possess two essential properties: magnetic and dielectric. This research reports the author’s successful synthesis of an Fe2.75Mn0.25O4/rGO nanocomposite as an anti-radar material using the coprecipitation method. Interestingly, the main precursors used were natural materials, namely iron sand and corn cob waste. XRD, FTIR, and SEM-EDX characterized the research samples to determine the nanocomposite’s structure and phase, functional groups, and morphology after doping. XRD characterization results showed that Fe2.75Mn0.25O4/rGO nanoparticles had a cubic crystal structure and that there were no new peaks, which indicates that Mn had been successfully substituted into Fe. FTIR test results showed that the Fe2.75Mn0.25O4/rGO nanocomposite had Mn and Fe-O functional groups in octahedral and tetrahedral positions at wave numbers of 418 480 cm-1 and that there were C=C functional groups at the wave number of 1629 cm-1. SEM results showed that the nanocomposite comprised Fe2.75Mn0.25O4/rGO particles in agglomerated spheres and corn-cob-based rGO in sheet form, with a grain size of around 26–31 nm. EDX test results showed the appearance of Fe, Mn, O, and C elements. It was also found that the 3-mm-thick Fe2.75Mn0.25O4/rGO nanocomposite sample achieved the highest reflection loss (RL) value of -43.6 dB at a frequency of 8.5 GHz, indicating a significant radar wave absorption capability.

Abstract

Dolphinear is an instrument for monitoring sound wave signals underwater. This study aims to see how the results of sound recording by Dolphinear type DE200 based on variations in distance and frequency of the sound source using the Audacity Software. In this study, the sound source will be generated through a waterproof speaker with a frequency variation of 100 Hz to 20 kHz. The distance between the sound source and the dolphinear is also varied from 1 to 5 meters. Audacity software is used to generate, record, and obtain the spectrum of the recorded audio sound signal. Based on the spectrum of the sound recorded by the DE200 dolphinear, frequency peaks close to the source frequency can be detected in recording using a 500 Hz sound source, but the main frequency peaks in the spectrum are difficult to detect in recording using sound sources above 500 Hz. In this study, it was also found that there is a limit to the recording ability of the dolphinear DE200 for frequencies above 18 kHz which is indicated by a decrease in intensity at that frequency.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of interactive poster-based physics learning for biology students through a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis approach. Learning is designed to integrate physics concepts that are relevant to biology, such as fluid mechanics, optics, and thermodynamics, with attractive visualizations using interactive posters. The research method uses a quantitative-descriptive approach involving 60 biology students as research subjects. Data were collected through distributed questionnaires, then analyzed using the SWOT framework to identify the advantages, disadvantages, opportunities, and challenges of interactive poster-based learning. The results showed that using this interactive poster was able to improve students' understanding of physics concepts by 61.1% compared to conventional learning, mainly because the visualization helped improve information retention (making them remember the material better). The SWOT analysis showed that the main advantage of this learning is the relevance of the material to the needs of biology students, as well as its ability to simplify complex concepts. However, the main weakness is the limited time available for in-depth discussions. Great opportunities lie in the potential for developing more interactive digital posters, while the main challenge is the lack of supporting facilities.  Overall, interactive poster-based learning is effective as an innovative alternative in supporting the understanding of physics concepts for biology students.

Abstract

Physics is one of the basic courses taught in the Biology study programme at Mataram University. Despite its important relevance in understanding biological phenomena, physics learning is often considered less interesting and relevant by biology students. This study aims to identify criticisms of physics education faced by biology students and propose solutions to improve the effectiveness of physics learning in the context of biology. This research uses descriptive quantitative method with data collection technique through questionnaires distributed to 70 first semester students from Biology study programme. Measurement indicators include learning effectiveness and level of satisfaction with physics courses. The results showed that the majority of respondents (76%) considered understanding physics as important or very important in the study of biology, especially because many biological phenomena are explained using physical principles. However, 42% of respondents stated that the physics material taught was only moderately relevant, with the main challenges being teaching methods that were not integrated with biological applications and limited mastery of basic mathematics by students. Based on these findings, the use of cooperative learning approaches and the integration of physics material with real examples of applications in biology are suggested to improve students' learning motivation and understanding.
