Abstract

Fresh foods rich in minerals, fiber, vitamins, and water such as fruits and vegetables can help clean teeth by increasing saliva production and chewing ability. There are many types of fruit that can be consumed to help maintain oral hygiene, including cucumber and pineapple. This study aims to determine the difference in the effectiveness of chewing cucumber fruit with honey pineapple fruit on dental plaque in students of class VIII A and VIII B SMP Negeri 13 Banjarbaru. This type of research is a quasi experimental with pretest posttest two group design. The number of samples was 45 respondents using total sampling technique. Data analysis using Paired and Independent Sample T-Test. The results showed that the plaque value before chewing cucumber was 2.74 and after chewing cucumber was 1.40 with a difference value of 1.34 while before chewing honey pineapple was 2.75 and after chewing honey pineapple was 0.90 with a difference value of 1.85. Paired test shows that the probability value (p=0.000 <0.05). Independent test shows that the probability value (p=0.004 <0.05) then H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. The conclusion that honey pineapple fruit is more effective for reducing dental plaque means that there is a difference in the effectiveness of chewing cucumber fruit with honey pineapple fruit on dental plaque in students of class VIII A and VIII B SMP Negeri 13 Banjarbaru. It is recommended for students and teachers to be able to utilize fruits such as cucumber and honey pineapple as natural alternative ingredients to clean teeth by chewing.

Abstract

Caries is a disease of the hard tissue of the teeth caused by bacteria adhering to the surface of the teeth in the form of plaque. The formation of dental plaque can be prevented by plaque control including mechanical control and chemical control, one of which is gargling using natural ingredients, namely young coconut water (Cocus Nucifera L Var. Viridis). Pure coconut water has antimicrobial activity due to its high lauric acid content and has been used as a remedy for several oral infections. This study aims to determine the effect of young coconut water gargling (Cocus Nucifera L Var. Viridis) on dental plaque. The type of research used was quasi-experimental with a pretest and posttest one group design. The sample in this study was taken by means of purposive sampling totaling 44 people. Measurements were made before and after consuming 100 ml of young coconut water (Cocus Nucifera L Var. Viridis). Plaque was measured using the Personal Hygiene Performance (PHP) method. Data analysis used the Mann-Whitney test. The results of the study gargling young coconut water (Cocos Nucifera L Var. Viridis) 1.31 and after decreasing 0.47. There was a significant difference between before and after gargling young coconut water (Cocos Nucifera L Var. Viridis) p=0.000. The conclusion in this study was that gargling with young coconut water (Cocos Nucifera L Var. Viridis) had an effect on reducing the dental plaque index

Abstract

South Kalimantan has seen a significant rise in dental and oral health issues, particularly periodontal diseases, which are prevalent among diabetic patients. This research aimed to analyze the periodontal status and the corresponding treatment needs of the Prolanis group, consisting of diabetic mellitus (DM) patients, at Sungai Ulin Health Center and South Banjarbaru Health Center, Banjarbaru City, during the second year of the study. A descriptive-analytical approach was employed to assess the periodontal tissue condition using the Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs (CPITN). A total of 65 respondents were examined, and the results indicated that 49.23% of the participants had tartar, while 30.78% displayed healthy periodontal conditions. Counseling on oral hygiene and scaling treatments were provided. The study emphasizes the importance of regular dental check-ups and proper oral hygiene practices, particularly in diabetic patients, to prevent further complications. Recommendations include brushing teeth twice daily and reducing the intake of cariogenic foods.

Abstract

Dental caries remains a major public health concern, particularly among children, with various factors influencing its development, including nutritional statusThis study examines the relationship between stunting and saliva pH as a risk factor for dental caries in children. Conducted in Hulu Sungai Utara District, South Kalimantan Province, it involved 121 elementary school students through total sampling. Data collection included height-for-age measurements to classify stunting and saliva pH analysis using a digital pH meter. Statistical analysis via the Mann-Whitney U test revealed that stunted children had significantly lower saliva pH (mean: 5.794) compared to non-stunted children (mean: 6.927), with a p-value of 0.000 (p<0.05). These findings suggest that stunting may impair salivary gland function, leading to decreased saliva pH and increased susceptibility to dental caries. This study underscores the need for targeted interventions to improve dental health and nutrition in stunted populations.

Abstract

Periodontal disease is more prevalent and severe in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This study aimed to describe periodontal status and examine its association with gender and age among diabetic patients enrolled in the Prolanis program. A cross-sectional analytical survey was conducted on all 65 Prolanis participants with confirmed type 2 diabetes mellitus at Banjarbaru Selatan Community Health Center, Indonesia. Periodontal status was assessed using the Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs (CPITN). Severity was dichotomized as not severe (score 0–2) and severe (score 3–4). Associations with gender and age groups were tested using chi-square tests (α = 0.05). Participants were predominantly female (84.6%) with a mean age of 58 years. Severe periodontitis (pocket ≥4 mm) was found in 63.1% of patients. No significant association was observed between periodontal disease severity and gender (p = 0.733) or age group (p = 0.114). A high burden of moderate-to-severe periodontitis exists among diabetic patients in the Prolanis program, irrespective of gender or age. Regular periodontal screening and integrated diabetes–oral health management are strongly recommended.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic, incurable disease associated with a reduced life expectancy of approximately 10 years due to cardiovascular complications such as ischemic heart disease and stroke. According to the International Diabetes Federation and WHO, the number of people with diabetes in Indonesia is projected to rise from 8.4 million in 2000 to 21.3 million in 2030. Data from the 2018 National Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) indicated an increase in prevalence from 6.9% in 2013 to 8.5% in 2018, with higher rates in urban (2.0%) compared to rural (1.0%) areas, and the highest prevalence observed up to the age of 65. South Kalimantan ranks second nationally in periodontal disease prevalence, which is significantly associated with diabetes. If left untreated, periodontal disease in diabetic patients may lead to severe infection and even death. This study aimed to analyze factors influencing blood glucose levels and periodontal disease in patients with diabetes mellitus. It employed an observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach, involving 30 diabetic respondents. Bivariate analysis revealed significant associations between stress level (p = 0.013) and periodontal disease (p = 0.004) with blood glucose levels (p < 0.05). The study concludes that stress level and periodontal disease are significantly related to blood glucose control in diabetic patients. It is recommended to provide greater attention through curative efforts, including non-pharmacological therapies such as relaxation techniques, diabetes exercise programs, and proper tooth-brushing education for patients with diabetes mellitus.
