Abstract

This study aimed to determine the influence of social media scrolling habits on the learning concentration of students of Community Education at the Faculty of Education, Universitas Negeri Medan. This study employed a quantitative associative approach. The population of this study consisted of 331 students. The sampling technique used was proportionate stratified random sampling, in which the population was divided into several strata or groups based on certain characteristics. The sample consisted of 77 students from the Community Education Department, with an error tolerance of 10%. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using simple linear regression analysis. The results of the data analysis revealed that social media scrolling habits had a significant influence on students' learning concentration, with a t-value of 3.898 greater than the t-table value of 1.665, and an F-value of 15.195 with a significance level of 0.000 < 0.05. Since the t-value was greater than the t-table value, it could be concluded that H₀ was rejected and Hₐ was accepted. Furthermore, the coefficient of determination (R²) was 0.168, indicating that 16.8% of the variation in learning concentration could be explained by social media scrolling habits, while the remaining 83.2% was influenced by factors outside the scope of this study.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the strengthening of adolescents' creative character based on local wisdom at Sanggar Bunga Padi in Pematang Biara Village, Pantai Labu District. The research was motivated by various character-related issues among adolescents, including drug abuse, theft, declining discipline, and decreasing awareness of local culture. Sanggar Bunga Padi serves as a non-formal educational institution that utilizes arts and cultural activities as a medium for fostering adolescents' creative character through the internalization of local wisdom values. This study employed a qualitative approach using a case study design. The research participants consisted of one studio manager, one instructor, and two adolescent members selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data analysis followed the Miles and Huberman interactive model, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The trustworthiness of the data was ensured through triangulation, prolonged engagement, and persistent observation. The findings revealed that the strengthening of adolescents' creative character at Sanggar Bunga Padi was implemented through Thomas Lickona's three components of character education: moral knowing, moral feeling, and moral action. In the moral knowing component, adolescents developed an understanding of discipline, responsibility, cooperation, creativity, and local cultural values. In the moral feeling component, they demonstrated increased self-confidence, empathy, appreciation of local culture, and motivation to create. In the moral action component, these values were reflected in disciplined behavior, responsibility, teamwork, the courage to express creative ideas, and active participation in artistic and cultural activities. Therefore, Sanggar Bunga Padi plays an effective role as a non-formal educational institution in strengthening adolescents' creative character through the internalization of local wisdom. Abstract

This study aimed to describe the efforts made by volunteers to improve reading and writing literacy among learners at the Coastal Children’s Education House in Percut Village. The study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The research subjects consisted of two volunteers who actively participated in literacy mentoring activities. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data trustworthiness was established through prolonged engagement, technique triangulation, and member checking, while the data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings showed that the volunteers’ efforts included learning assistance, reading habituation, and writing guidance. These efforts contributed to the improvement of the learners’ ability to read and comprehend texts, process and use information, write and express ideas, and develop critical and evaluative literacy skills. Although several challenges were encountered, including differences in learners’ abilities, limited learning facilities and reading materials, and inconsistent attendance, literacy activities continued to be implemented through learning approaches tailored to the learners’ needs, creative teaching methods, and collaboration between the volunteers and the management of the Coastal Children’s Education House.
