Abstract

This community service program was implemented to optimize the use of an environmentally friendly oyster opening tool named Ecosmart Oyster as a solution to issues of efficiency, work safety, and the low economic value of traditional oyster processing carried out by coastal communities in Lajari Village, Barru Regency. Currently, the oyster opening process still relies on manual knives that require great effort, considerable time, and pose a high risk of injury. Furthermore, traditional methods often damage oyster shells, thereby reducing the potential utilization of shell waste as economically valuable products. Through the Ecosmart Oyster innovation, this program aims to improve the effectiveness of the oyster opening process, minimize the risk of workplace accidents, and encourage the transformation of oyster waste into an additional source of income for the community. The program was carried out through several main stages: preliminary study to identify community needs, socialization of the tool to fishermen and oyster processing entrepreneurs, implementation and intensive assistance in tool usage, monitoring and evaluation of tool effectiveness, and dissemination of results to the village government and wider community. A participatory approach was employed throughout all activities to ensure active community involvement in the learning process and enable independent tool operation. Program results demonstrate that the use of Ecosmart Oyster can increase oyster opening efficiency by 45–50% compared to manual methods, with average opening time decreasing from 30 seconds to only 15 seconds per oyster. Additionally, no injuries were reported during the training and implementation process, indicating a high level of tool safety. The integrity of oyster shells was also better maintained, thereby opening opportunities for their utilization as craft materials, planting media, animal feed, or calcium fertilizer. Community enthusiasm, ease of tool use, and low maintenance costs further support the sustainability of this program. In conclusion, this community service program successfully enhanced the community's capacity to process oysters more productively, safely, and sustainably.

Abstract

Teaching science through STEAM projects is increasingly popular in Indonesian elementary schools, yet one persistent challenge is the lack of psychometrically validated assessment instruments that match what actually happens in those classrooms. This study developed and validated a three-part STEAM-based assessment package—a conceptual post-test (17 items), a project performance rubric (15 criteria), and a student response questionnaire (25 Likert items)—for use across three hands-on projects: a Stick Bridge (Grade 4/Force), an Energy-Efficient House (Grade 5/Energy), and a Simple Flashlight (Grade 6/Electricity). Two expert validators assessed content validity using Aiken's V, and 102 students from SDN 2 Tapa and SDN 3 Batudaa in Gorontalo completed the instruments as part of an empirical field trial. Results showed strong content validity (V̄ = 0.812), acceptable reliability for the 16-item valid questionnaire scale (α = 0.732), and a positive student response rate of 76.9%. Rasch Rating Scale Model analysis revealed that all items fell in the negative logit range, indicating a person-item gap that points toward a need for more challenging items in future revisions. A significant difference between schools was found for individual post-test scores (p = 0.018). These findings confirm that the instruments are content-valid, reliable, and practically usable in Indonesian elementary science classrooms, while also providing clear directions for refinement.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze student perceptions of the implementation of a three-phase learning model (trigger questions and discussion, lecturer explanation, and practice exercises) in English courses. This research contributes to the pedagogical discourse on active learning approaches by providing empirical evidence of how non-English major students perceive structured, phase-based instruction that combines discussion, direct explanation, and practice. The findings offer insights into which instructional elements resonate most with learners and which require refinement, thereby informing evidence-based improvements in English language teaching for teacher education programs. This study employed a survey method with a quantitative descriptive approach. The research sample consisted of 72 students from the Primary School Teacher Education Program, divided into three classes (A, B, and ICP). The research instrument was a questionnaire with 32 statement items using a 1-5 Likert scale. The instrument reliability was very high, with a Cronbach's alpha of 0.928. The results showed that student perceptions of the three-phase learning model were in the good category, with a mean score of 3.68. The aspects receiving the highest appreciation were the delivery of learning objectives at the beginning of the session (mean score of 4.25) and the relevance of examples to the exercises (mean score of 4.12). Meanwhile, the pace of material delivery (mean score of 3.25) and transitions between phases (mean score of 3.32) require improvement. ANOVA tests showed no significant difference in perceptions among classes (p=0.260), nor did t-tests based on gender (p=0.533).

Abstract

The conventional process of opening oyster shells using manual knives has various limitations, including low work efficiency, high risk of worker injury, and damage to oyster meat integrity that impacts the economic value of the product. This development activity aims to design and implement an appropriate technology-based oyster opener that is efficient, safe, and sustainable. The implementation method adopts a Research and Development approach through five systematic stages: needs analysis through literature study and field observation; design based on ergonomic principles and lever mechanics; prototype fabrication using local teak wood and mild steel materials; technical performance testing; and evaluation and design finalization. The Ecosmart Oyster prototype was designed applying first-class lever principles with load-fulcrum-force configuration that produces a mechanical advantage of 3.5. Testing results on 50 oyster samples showed significant improvements in opening time efficiency of 50 percent with an average duration of 15 seconds per unit, reduction of meat damage up to 70 percent with 90 percent producing intact high-quality products, and zero work injury incidents during the testing process. This tool offers an innovative solution that increases the productivity of local oyster processors, minimizes occupational safety risks, and supports the sustainability of the fisheries industry through the use of environmentally friendly materials.
