Abstract

Throughout the ages, humans have processed and produced food and beverages by applying the principles of biotechnology. In Indonesia, foods produced through biotechnology—such as tempeh and bread—are commonly found across different segments of society. However, due to a lack of information, many people remain unaware that these foods and drinks are the result of conventional biotechnology processes. Therefore, the aim of this activity was to introduce biotechnology and its role in the food industry, as well as to train students of Madrasah Aliyah Al-Jihad Pontianak in producing biotechnology-based products such as bread and tempeh. This activity was divided into two stages: the preparation stage and the implementation stage. During the implementation stage of the community service program, three main activities were carried out: first, a presentation of the socialization materials; second, hands-on training in making bread and tempeh; and third, the evaluation process. Monitoring and evaluation of the activity outcomes were conducted using questionnaires. Based on the results of the pre-test and post-test, it was found that there was an 83% increase in knowledge among female students at Al-Jihad regarding biotechnology-based food products. Sejak ribuan tahun lalu, manusia telah mengolah dan menghasilkan makanan dan minumannya dengan menerapkan prinsip bioteknologi. Di indonesia, berbagai macam makanan yang merupakan produk bioteknologi dapat dengan mudah dijumpai pada berbagai kalangan masyarakat seperti tempe dan roti. Masih banyak yang tidak mengetahui bahwa makanan dan minuman tersebut merupakan produk yang dihasilkan dari proses bioteknologi karena kurangnya informasi. Oleh karena itu pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dilakukan dengan tujuan untuk mengenalkan kajian ilmu bioteknologi dan peranannya dalam industri pangan serta melatih siswa Madrasah Aliyah Al-Jihad Pontianak dalam menghasilkan produk bioteknologi seperti roti dan tempe. Kegiatan ini dibagi menjadi menjadi dua tahapan yaitu tahap persiapan dan tahap pelaksanaan kegiatan. Dalam tahap pelaksanaan PKM dilakukan 3 rangkaian kegiatan yaitu tahapan pemaparan materi sosialisasi, tahapan kedua adalah pelaksanaan pelatihan pembuatan roti dan tempe, dan tahapan terakhir adalah proses evaluasi. Monitoring evaluasi hasil kegiatan dilakukan melalui pengisian kuesioner. Berdasarkan hasil pre-test dan post didapatkan hasil bahwa terjadi peningkatan pengetahuan sebesar 83% di kalangan santri Al-Jihad putri mengenai produk pangan berbasis bioteknologi.

Abstract

Since endophytic bacteria are known to generate bioactive substances with possible antibacterial qualities, they present a viable substitute for antibiotics in the fight against antibiotic resistance, especially in harmful bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus. This study aimed to isolate and identify potential endophytic bacteria from red caladium plants (Caladium bicolor L.) and evaluate their antimicrobial activity against S. aureus, a Gram-positive bacterium notorious for its antibiotic resistance. The research was conducted using the disc diffusion method to assess the inhibitory effects of endophytic bacterial isolates on S. aureus growth. The results revealed varying levels of antimicrobial activity among the isolates, with isolate CLB242 demonstrating an average inhibition zone of 16.33 mm, isolate CLB244 showing an average of 17.6 mm, and isolate CLB245 showed an inhibition zone of 4 mm. Meanwhile, other isolates did not produce any inhibition zones, suggesting possible resistance or undetectable active compounds. Certain endophytic bacterial isolates from Caladium bicolor L. exhibit promising antimicrobial activity against S. aureus, highlighting their potential as sources of novel antimicrobial agents. Further research is recommended to identification of the active isolates molecular profiles and characterization of their bioactive compounds responsible for the observed antimicrobial effects, as well as to explore their mechanisms of action and potential applications in pharmaceutical development.

Abstract

This community service initiative aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of wound care nurses in the assessment and early detection of diabetic foot ulcers (DFU). The program was a collaborative effort between the Institut Teknologi dan Kesehatan Muhammadiyah Kalimantan Barat and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS). The methodology included lectures, discussions, hands-on practice, and evaluation using a one-group pre-test and post-test design to measure the intervention's effectiveness. Results demonstrated a significant increase in nurses' knowledge, with the average pre-test score improving from 75 to 88 after the intervention. This indicates that international collaboration is effective in improving the knowledge and skills of wound care nurses. Furthermore, regular, scheduled training sessions are recommended to maintain and enhance nurses' competency in diabetic wound management.

Abstract

BPS data for Mempawah Regency shows that aquaculture production in the Anjongan District is 163 tons/year. This production result is still lower compared to other sub-districts. One of the factors causing the not-yet-optimal effects of aquaculture production in the Anjongan District is the limited mastery of aquaculture technology. Biotechnology in the field of fisheries offers sustainable technology to increase fishery resources. This Community Service aims to conduct a Focus Group Discussion on plans to apply biotechnology in fish farming. In this activity, several applications of biotechnology in aquaculture were presented. The results of the discussion activities revealed several problems, including limited sources of clean water for fish farming, high costs for feed, and limited resources for implementation in the field of biotechnology. Feed is a top priority and an essential factor because fish can grow in a healthy, optimal, and quality manner.

Abstract

The direct causes of stunting include inadequate nutritional intake and infectious diseases. Lack of awareness and knowledge of women of childbearing age, especially pregnant women, regarding the importance of nutritious food and types of nutritious food during pregnancy, can contribute to stunting. The solution offered is the provision of health education, this activity will be aligned with the government. Activities were carried out synergistically in one of the villages, namely Bange Village with the participation of the Community Health Center, District Head, Village Head, and nutrition practitioners. The objective of this study is to increase the knowledge and understanding of pregnant women about the importance of consuming nutritious food during pregnancy to prevent stunting in their babies. Beside it, to conduct the health promotion at the community base by providing health education about the importance of nutritious food and nutritious foods for pregnant women and their processing. Before the activity was carried out, a pre-test was carried out and after that a post-test was given to evaluate the results of the health education carried out. Evaluation of activities by assessing the comparison of pre-test scores and post-test scores. After the health education activities are completed, pregnant women are given additional food packages. Health education about the importance of nutritious food and nutritious foods for pregnant women and their processing is proven to increase knowledge.

Abstract

Antibiotic resistance is a global problem in the health sector. The level of antibiotic resistance that occurs can be caused by several influencing factors, including 6 isolates of rhizosphere bacteria that were successfully isolated from the rhizosphere of the Avicenia marina plant. The purpose of this study was to isolate and determine the best minimum inhibitory concentration of rhizosphere bacteria of the A. marina plant and its effectiveness in inhibiting pathogenic bacteria S. aureus. This study is a quantitative research method using the isolation and characterization of rhizosphere bacteria, antagonistic test of rhizosphere bacteria and test of the results of the extraction of filtrate of rhizosphere bacteria culture of A. marina plants. The results of this study were (1) five of the isolates of bacteria that were successfully isolated were included in the Bacilus type and 1 isolate of bacteria included in the Cocobasil type; (2) there were 3 of the 6 isolates that could inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria S. aureus with an inhibition range of 10.04-4.42 mm; (3) Rhizosphere bacterial isolate (TN 1) is an isolate with the best inhibition diameter and is categorized as strong, namely 10.04 mm; (4) ethyl acetate extract of Rhizosphere bacterial isolate culture filtrate (TN 1), has a minimum inhibitory concentration of 0.50% against pathogenic bacteria S.aureus with an inhibition diameter of 7.18 mm which is better when compared to the positive control using chloramphenicol.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the diversity of sponge symbiont bacteria and the effectiveness of active compounds of bacteria that are symbiotic with marine sponges from Lemukutan Island waters. The methods in this study are isolation of sponge symbiont bacteria, characterization of sponge symbiont bacteria, antagonistic tests, activity tests of the best sponge symbiont bacterial isolate extract culture filtrate, and GCMS/MS tests. The results showed that nineteen isolates of sponge symbiont bacteria were successfully isolated from sponge types from Theonella cylindrica and Hyattella intestinalis sponges in Lemukutan waters. Seven isolates of sponge symbiont bacteria are included in the Gram-positive bacteria genre. While the other twelve are included in Gram-negative bacteria. Ten of the nineteen isolates of sponge symbiont bacteria have antibacterial activity for S. aureus. Isolate Sp4 10-6 B, based on the results of antagonistic tests, has an inhibition diameter of 10.28 mm, which is categorized as solid inhibition. Ethyl acetate extract of Sp4 10-6 culture filtrate has a minimum inhibitory concentration value of 0.5% against pathogenic bacteria S.aureus. The active compound with the potential for antibiotic development is the Tetradecane compound, which has the highest peak area of the eight other types of compounds. This shows that the concentration of the compound contained is higher than the other compounds. This compound is included in the aliphatic hydrocarbon and alkane groups.

Abstract

Poor nutritional status of the community leads to weak human development index (HDI) values. Increasing interest in fish consumption, which is rich in diverse nutritional sources, can be a solution to improved people nutritional status in coastal communities whose livelihood marine-dependent. Fish is known as a good source of a high quality protein. This nutritional source plays an important role to provide the nutrition of pregnant women and the development of toddlers. Food diversification by using aquaculture products is expected to be one solution to increased public interest in consuming fish and also could be away to increase the selling value of fishery products. This social service aims to provide information in utilizing the fishery products (i.e Catfish) as a food diversification materials to prevent stunting in the Pak Bulu village community, Anjongan sub-district, Mempawah Regency. The stages of this activity include 1) Survey and analysis of community conditions, 2) Stunting education and introduction to the process of food diversification fish based. This community Service activities are expected to increase knowledge and skills in processing fishery products. Therefore, it can increase fish consumption in the community and become one of the solution to prevent stunting and also could be a way to improve the community's economy.
