Abstract

The Hadith about Jahimah, who sought the Prophet Muhammad’s permission to participate in battle but was instructed instead to stay with his mother because “Paradise lies beneath her feet,” underscores the noble value of devotion to one’s mother. This virtue is also reflected in Surah Luqman (31:14–15), where God describes the mother’s struggle during pregnancy and weaning as wahnun ‘alā wahnin (“weakness upon weakness”) and commands children to show gratitude to their parents. This study aims to examine the psychological foundation of the Qur’anic injunction of birrul wâlidain (devotion to parents) in Surah Luqman 31:14–15 through the perspectives of maternal psychology and humanistic psychology. Employing a library research method and a descriptive-analytical approach, the study explores two main aspects: first, the maternal psychological perspective, which highlights the emotional and physical challenges experienced by mothers during pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding as formative factors in developing empathy and moral awareness in children; and second, the humanistic perspective, which emphasizes consciousness, empathy, and unconditional love as the essence of filial devotion. The findings reveal that the Qur’anic command to honor one’s parents—particularly the mother—constitutes not only a moral obligation but also an acknowledgment of maternal psychological resilience as the foundation for a harmonious parent–child relationship. Consequently, the moral message of Surah Luqman 31:14–15 transcends ethical instruction, reflecting an emotional and spiritual reciprocity between mother and child and reaffirming the relevance of birrul wâlidain in fostering familial affection and the cultivation of virtuous character.

Abstract

The manuscript of the mushaf al-Qur'an produced by the Surakarta Sultanate represents an intellectual heritage of Nusantara Islam possessing significant historical, philological, and cultural value. This research aims to identify the characteristics of the manuscript, examine the nature of the scribal anomalies contained within, and analyze its implications for the meaning and interpretation of the Qur'an. The research uses a qualitative method with a tahqiq approach of the manuscript combined with codicological analysis, paleography, and text comparison against the standard Ottoman rasm. The object of research is focused on the mushaf  manuscript of the mushaf coded MAA.001 which is stored in the Library of the Great Mosque of Kasunanan Surakarta. The results of the study show that the manuscript is estimated to have been written in the period 1780–1820 AD and functions as a liturgical, educational, and symbolic medium of religious legitimacy in the palace environment. The tahqiq analysis reveal several writing errors in the QS. al-Taubah verses 81, 83, and 84, in the form of changes in letters and harakat that cause a significant shift in meaning, but are not related to the variation of authentic qira'at. In addition, there was a tendency to use the rasm imlā'ī mixed with the rasm 'Utsmānī as well as orthographic inconsistencies in some parts of the manuscript. These findings show that the variation in writing is more caused by technical factors of copying and uneven standardization of mushaf in the archipelago than by differences in qira'at traditions. This study emphasizes the importance of tahqiq studies on the Nusantara mushaf manuscripts as an effort to maintain the accuracy of the Qur'an text, reconstruct the history of Islamic scientific transmission in Java, and support the preservation of the heritage of Indonesian Islamic manuscripts.

Abstract

This study discusses the concept of obedience according to Bakri Syahid in Tafsir Al-Huda, a Javanese interpretation. This study examines how Bakri Syahid interprets and defines obedience in various speech and Javanese vocabulary levels, from Ngoko to krama. This interpretation shows the importance of obedience, as obedience is passive and involves deep appreciation and sincerity. Through a qualitative approach and library research method, the author examines 54 verses of the Qur'an containing the word and its derivations ṭā‘ah and identifies five levels of obedience, from the lowest (Ngrujuki) to the highest (Ngestokaken Dhawuh). The author also examines the meaning of each interpretation of ṭā‘ah in Javanese through several dictionaries and books on Javanese grammar. In addition, in studying the verses, the author considers the Asbabun Nuzul verses and Ibn Kathir's interpretation as a comparison to make this research as objective as possible. This research concludes that obedience, according to Bakri Syahid, involves seriousness, conformity between words, heart, and deeds, sincerity, conformity to the rules, readiness in all circumstances, consistency, love, and respect in carrying out Allah's commands.

Abstract

Environmental degradation has become one of the most critical global challenges in contemporary society, primarily driven by excessive human consumption and the exploitative use of natural resources. Islam addresses this issue through ethical teachings that emphasize moderation and balance in human behavior. One of the key Qur'anic principles related to this issue is the prohibition of isrāf (extravagance), as stated in QS. Al-A'rāf verse 31: “Eat and drink, but do not be excessive. Indeed, Allah does not like those who are excessive.” This study aims to analyze the concept of isrāf in the Qur’an and to examine its relevance to environmental preservation using a thematic interpretation (tafsīr maudhū‘ī) approach. The research adopts a qualitative library-based method by collecting Qur’anic verses related to isrāf and analyzing them through classical and contemporary tafsir as well as Islamic environmental ethics perspectives. The findings indicate that isrāf in the Qur’anic worldview refers to any form of behavior that exceeds proper limits, including excessive consumption and irresponsible use of natural resources. QS. Al-A‘rāf verse 31 highlights moderation as a fundamental Islamic value and provides an ethical foundation for sustainable living. The prohibition of isrāf is therefore not merely a moral injunction but also a practical framework for addressing contemporary environmental crises. This study concludes that Islamic teachings on moderation and balance are highly relevant to modern sustainability efforts and can contribute significantly to the development of environmentally responsible behavior.

Abstract

The urgency of this study is driven by the dynamics of wife-initiated divorces in Ngemplak, Boyolali, which recorded the highest rate five times during the 2015-2024 period based on data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS). The peak of this escalation occurred in 2024, recording 538 wife-initiated divorces compared to 21 husband-initiated divorces, reaching a ratio of 25:1. This study aims to examine the extent to which religious understanding and practices influence this high rate of wife-initiated divorces. Employing a qualitative method with Annemarie Schimmel's phenomenological framework, this research attempts to observe and analyze the occurring sociological phenomena. The analysis of 30 court decision records and interviews, employment data, gender profiles, and religious infrastructure indicates that the high rate of wife-initiated divorces is predominantly driven by women's increasing financial independence. This independence acts as a catalyst for women's agency to file for divorce when confronted with the degradation of responsibility and the diminishing role of husbands in the household. During such marital crises, religion undergoes a functional shift within the wives' religious experiences. Religion is no longer interpreted as a passive obligation to maintain a marriage that has lost its ideal function; rather, it transforms into a source of religious coping that strengthens moral and spiritual legitimacy in the decision to separate, aiming to preserve psychological well-being and the integrity of faith values. This study recommends the necessity of strengthening pre-marital counseling curricula that emphasize gender equity relations in building family resilience.
