Abstract

Abstract

Waste is something that is always produced daily. Therefore, its management is a challenge, both on a micro and macro scale. Human activities related to household waste management contribute to climate change and this is a concern for farmers, including urban farmers. Climate change that occurs can have a negative impact on agricultural activities. On the other hand, farmers also need to manage their urban agricultural land efficiently. This extension aims to increase public understanding of how to process household waste into liquid organic fertilizer independently. The method used is quantitative, using a questionnaire during the extension to assess community knowledge. The extension also demonstrated the processing of waste into liquid organic fertilizer, by showing simple tools, materials, and procedures. In addition, post-extension assistance was also provided to increase community capacity in managing waste into liquid organic fertilizer. The results showed that there was an increase in community knowledge regarding waste management. Ultimately, this initiative provides ongoing support to the community, helping them successfully process household organic waste into liquid organic fertilizer. Thus, the efforts made by the community in processing waste can potentially mitigate climate change.

Abstract

This study analyzes the traditional gender conceptions within the Sundanese community in Cikembang Village, West Java, explores the factors that shape these conceptions, and examines their impact on the community’s post-disaster management. Indonesia is prone to disasters, especially in West Java, where most of the Sundanese community resides. In 2021, a flash flood disaster occurred in one of the rural areas of West Java, namely in Cikembang Village. Gender as part of the socio-cultural structure influences how communities experience and respond to disasters, therefore, it is very important to study disaster events from a gender perspective. The research method used in this study is qualitative with a case study approach, and the data was collected through in-depth interviews and observations. This study shows that the Sundanese community has traditional gender conceptions, assigning distinct responsibilities to men and women. Men are seen as leaders and providers, while women are expected to nurture and fulfill reproductive roles. These gender conceptions are shaped by socio-cultural values and Islamic religious teachings. The rural context of Cikembang further solidifies the dominance of these traditional gender conceptions. These traditional gender conceptions greatly affect labor division in community post-disaster management. Men's dominance in leadership results in women's underrepresentation in decision-making, minimizing their contributions. It is essential to understand gender dynamics in disasters and recognize women's roles in resilience, as this can reveal how socio-cultural factors influence disaster-related social dynamics.

Abstract

In the domain of sustainability, urban agriculture is recognized as a key instrument for confronting critical global challenges including but not limited to food security, climate change, and environmental degradation. As an integral component of sustainable practices, urban agriculture offers a comprehensive strategy for addressing these concerns concurrently. The primary aim of this systematic review is to delineate the methodologies implemented for sustainable urban agriculture in Indonesia. Additionally, it assesses the foremost opportunities and challenges in leveraging urban agriculture to achieve environmental, social, and economic objectives. This review used the PRISMA technique to assess 25 articles investigating the relationship between urban agriculture (UA) and sustainability. The studies were selected from the Scopus database, and the aim was to present a comprehensive summary of the current knowledge in this field. Results indicate that urban agriculture offers significant economic, social, and environmental benefits in sustainable urban environments. Realizing its full potential requires coordinated efforts through policy development, community involvement, and overcoming existing obstacles. This study addresses the urgent need for sustainability in cities by integrating farming practices within urban areas, promising food security, reduced environmental impact, and increased urban resilience. With cities facing challenges such as population growth, resource scarcity, and climate change, urban agriculture is key to creating sustainable cities for the future.

Abstract

Abstract

Agroforests in many tropical countries have long been acknowledged as substantially necessary to contribute to biodiversity conservation and community livelihood. The importance of agroforest biodiversification is now overlooked and replaced by a simplified structure due to the impact of agricultural commercialization. Land use changes have occurred in the Upper Citarum Watershed over time, converting traditional agroforests into monoculture plantations at the expense of their socio-ecological function. This paper aimed to analyze land use change dynamics and the effect of biodiversity loss on the socio-economy aspect of the rural agricultural landscape in the Upper Citarum Watershed. We conducted a survey of 95 respondents of community farmers in the agricultural landscape in Sukapura and Resmi Tingal Village using questionnaire guidelines and direct interviews to gather information. There was a significant decrease in plant diversity in some plot agroforests, which, in the previous study, was dominant to be reduced even to local extinctions. The results also show that the farmer poverty index according to BPS criteria is 12.63% of respondents who are below the poverty line. Our results imply that preserving mixed-garden (talun) patches in a landscape dominated by cash-crop gardens is one of the strategies that could conserve landscape biodiversity and increasingly a sustainable livelihood. Abstract

Abstract: This study shows the use of Toba Batak Moslem kinship relations as a livelihood strategy for land control in the changing space of power since the Malay-Islamic era in Asahan through the perspective of Bourdieu's theory of practice. The research was conducted using ethnographic methods. The analysis units are determined in stages starting from the family, descent group, clan association, and the Toba Batak community in the hinterland areas of Bandar Pulau, Bandar Pasir Mandoge and Buntu Pane. The results of the study found that adaptation strategies have expanded alliances and increased the practical function of the Toba Batak kinship in an effort to control land as the most important source of livelihood as a corporate kinship unit. Contestation of land is getting more complicated as the influence of plantation corporate capital and state power enters the village. When dealing with the interests of other larger institutions such as plantation companies and the state in terms of land disputes, it appears that the use of clan networks or descent groups is limited in function, when compared with the competition for resources among Toba Batak families.   Keywords: kinship practices, livelihood strategies, migration, Toba Batak Moslem
