Abstract

Background: The involvement of husbands in the health of pregnant women is very important; adequate knowledge supports their role as good companions. Antenatal classes aims to reduce the knowledge gap between couples by involving husbands. However, the participation of husbands remains low. Objective: The study aims to analyze the correlation between the demographic, structural and psychological dimensions of husband's involvement and to identify the different reasons for low husband's involvement in antenatal classes. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study using a mixed methods approach. The study population consisted of the husbands of pregnant women who attended antenatal classes during the period December 2021 to May 2022 (6 months), totaling of 254 people. The sample siza was determined using the sample size formula for a known population, resulting in 168 people selected through a proportional sampling technique. Data collection was conducted through interview. Bivariate data analysis was performed using Chi-Square test, and multivariate analysis was conducted using Multiple Logistic Regression test. Qualitative data collected through in-depth interview based on interview guidelines with 5 (five) husbands as main informants, 3 (three) pregnant women and 1 (one) health worker (midwife) as triangulation informants. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis approach. Results: Partially, education and occupation variables were significantly associated with husband's participation in antenatal class (p<0.05). Simultaneously, education and perceived barriers were shown to jointly influence husband's involvement in antenatal class (p<0.05). The odds of husband's participation in antenatal class increase by 5.6 times as education increases. Additionally, the odds of involvement would be 3.266 times greater if there were no perceived barriers. Conclution: The use of educational technology as a medium of communication and information is an alternative to reduce perceived barriers related to time and work constraints.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: The prevalence of stunting in Indonesia has generally experienced a decline, although not significantly. The issue of stunting is not solely caused by a single, simple factor; rather, it is influenced by complex factors. This study aims to analyze the factors associating with stunting in urban areas across Indonesia. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional survey approach. The data were from the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey. The sample in this study were children aged 6 to 23 months residing in urban areas across Indonesia. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to examine the associate between the independent variables and the dependent variable. Results: This study found that male (PR = 1.37), history of stunting at birth (PR = 1.41), low birth weight (PR = 2.13), history of tuberculosis (TB) (PR = 4.53) and family wealth status (PR = 2.28) were significantly associated with stunting status among children in urban areas. These factors were identified as key determinants, with their respective prevalence ratios indicating a substantial association with the prevalence of stunting in the population under study. Conclusions: In the urban context, there are predictive factors of stunting prevalence that require serious attention, such as having a history of TB illness and poor environmental health conditions

Abstract

Background: Breast milk is an important source of nutrition for the growth and development of infants. It is highly susceptible to the accumulation of lipophilic compounds such as heavy metals. Breast milk can become a route through which infants are exposed to toxic substances like heavy metals. This study aimed to identify variations of trace elements and their associated factors contributing to the existence of trace elements in breast milk. Methods: This research employed a systematic literature review methodology utilizing PubMed, Scopus, and Science Direct databases. The search strategy followed specific English keywords to align with the PRISMA Extension for Systematic Reviews guidelines. Data synthesis involved a narrative approach, summarizing the main findings and interventions outlined in the chosen studies. The included articles consisted of full-text primary research published between 2013 and 2023. To mitigate potential language bias, only publications in English were considered for inclusion. Results: Our systematic review, comprising nine articles, revealed the presence of toxic metals including lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), aluminum (Al), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), mercury (Hg), and arsenic in human milk. Associated factors contributing to this presence include food intake (such as seafood, fruit, and canned fruit), water and canned drink consumption, smoking and exposure to smoke, regional location, and medical conditions. Conclusion: Heavy metals, including lead, cadmium, aluminum, copper, chromium, mercury, and arsenic are present in breast milk, influenced by factors like diet, water consumption, smoking, regional zones, and medical conditions. These findings underscore the urgent need for public health policies to monitor environmental exposure in lactating mothers and to develop dietary guidelines minimizing toxic exposure.

Abstract

Background: The family planning program (Keluarga Berencana or KB) is one of the Indonesian government’s efforts to suppress population growth. The program focuses on contraceptive usage. However, in practice, the level of continuity of contraceptive use are still low. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of sources of information and access to health facilities on the continuity of contraceptive use.Method: This quantitative study with a cross-sectional design had 1,195 respondents with an age range of <20 years to >35 years. Data were collected through structured interviews and questionnaires. Univariate data analysis was conducted with frequency distribution; bivariate data analysis utilized crosstabs, and the multivariate analysis used logistic regression. Results: The continuity of contraceptive use was 91.9% among respondents who received information about the family planning program, either orally, on mass media, or electronically, and it was 82.8% among respondents who accessed family planning services. This study found that factors that influence the continuity of contraceptive use were sources of electronic media information (OR = 0.6633; 95% CI = 0.4852 – 0.9067; p = 0.010) and access to family planning services (OR = 2.677; 95% CI = 1.652 – 4.337; p = 0.001). These findings suggest that the sources of information and access to health facilities affect the continuity of contraceptive use.
