Abstract

Farmers in Lieue Village, Darussalam District, Aceh Besar still use the handweeding method to control weeds in vegetable crops. This method takes a long time, making the weed control process less effective. In addition, the small amount of labor is not proportional to the area of vegetable crops, so the weed control method is less efficient. To overcome this, the partner community is offered a solution to the mechanical weed control method, namely by using a cultivator power weeder. The weed control tool offered is an engine-driven tool mounted on an iron frame with two iron wheels equipped with blades that function as soil cultivators and weed cutters. When the machine is turned on and running, the soil will be processed while cutting weeds and controlling weeds. The cultivatorpower weeder offered is an innovation developed by the Weed Management Laboratory of the Agrotechnology Study Program and the Agricultural Equipment and Machinery Laboratory of the Faculty of Agriculture, Syiah Kuala University. It is hoped that with this weed control tool, the weed control process in vegetable crops can be more effective and efficient and ultimately can increase the yield of vegetable crops of farmers in Aceh Besar. The results of the service showed that the service team had succeeded in making a power weeder cultivator as a mechanical weed controller using a driving machine. However, the tool that has been made turns out to be rather difficult to move. Therefore, wheels were added to the front to make it easier to move. This tool can be used for weed control in horticultural and food crops. To date, farmers have tried and used the power weeder cultivator as a mechanical weed controller to control weeds in vegetable crops in various target villages.

Abstract

The Effect of Temperature Variation on the Quality and Cost of Drying Lime Slices (Citrus aurantifolia Swingle)Abstract. Dried lime has the potential to be used as an alternative ingredient in the preparation of infused water, offering greater safety compared to fresh lime due to its longer shelf life and lower risk of microbial growth. The drying process also plays an important role in maintaining the quality and nutritional value of lime, ensuring that it remains beneficial for consumption. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different drying temperatures on the quality of lime slices as well as to analyze the economic aspects of the drying process. The experiment was arranged using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with five levels of drying temperature: 40C, 50C, 60C, 70C, and 80C. The quality parameters observed included moisture content, drying rate, and vitamin C content. The economic analysis covered fixed costs, variable costs, total costs, unit cost of drying, and the B/C ratio. The results showed that drying temperature had no significant effect on the final moisture content but significantly affected the vitamin C content. Drying at 80C produced the highest drying rate with the shortest processing time (420 minutes) but resulted in a greater reduction of vitamin C. Conversely, drying at 40C retained higher vitamin C content, although it required a longer drying time (25 hours). The economic analysis indicated a B/C ratio greater than 1, demonstrating that the lime drying process is financially feasible and has the potential to be developed on a small- to medium-scale agroindustry.

Abstract

The peel of gadung tuber (Dioscorea hispida Dennst), abundantly found in Riting Village, Aceh Besar, represents a local natural resource with potential use as an environmentally friendly botanical insecticide. Until now, gadung peel has been treated merely as waste from tuber processing and has no economic value, even though it contains bioactive compounds such as diosgenin and saponin, which are known to be toxic to insects. This community service program aimed to produce a nanoemulsion-based botanical insecticide sample derived from gadung peel extract, evaluate its effectiveness against Crocidolomia pavonana larvae, and enhance local community knowledge and skills in utilizing gadung peel waste as a raw material for botanical insecticide production. The program was carried out in two stages: (1) sample preparation and bioassay testing, and (2) knowledge transfer and hands-on training through workshops. The results showed that gadung peel extract significantly affected larval mortality, with LC₅₀ and LC₉₅ values of 0.682% and 1.469%, respectively. The workshops successfully improved participants’ understanding of gadung’s potential as a natural insecticide source, technical skills in handling raw materials, and the ability to formulate and apply simple botanical insecticides using local ingredients. Outputs of the activity included a training module, a technical guideline, and prototype products for further development. Overall, this program positively contributed to enhancing community capacity in sustainable agricultural innovation and promoting the utilization of local natural resources with economic and environmental benefits.
