Abstract

Algebraic thinking has the important role to improve the students' understanding in solving real-world problems, especially in algebraic forms. The aim of this study is to explore the students' algebraic thinking in terms of intuitive cognitive style. This research used the qualitative approach with case study method. 61 Grade-8 students in one of public secondary schools in Ngawi District, East Java, Indonesia were participated in this study. Three intuitive subjects were selected for interviewed. This study used algebraic thinking test, questionnaires, and interview protocol for collecting the data. Researchers adopted ten questions from TIMSS 2011 8th-Grade to examine the students algebraic thinking abilities. All questions were validated by three experts in mathematics education and piloted before used. In this study, three algebraic thinking components: generalization, analytic thinking, and dynamic thinking were used to analyze the students algebraic thinking abilities.  The finding showed that the intuitive students can solve number pattern problems using picture and number patterns in generalization component. In analytic thinking component, students can solve problems related to equations using trial-error strategies and substitution methods. The students can also carry out dynamic thinking component about equivalent proportion by determining the median value and proportion concept. Thus, it can be concluded that the intuitive students are able to demonstrate the three algebraic thinking components properly

Abstract

The algebraic thinking is very important for students to be able to abstract and generalize a mathematical problem. The purpose of this research is to reveal students' algebraic thinking processes in solving math problems based on reflective-impulsive cognitive styles. The method used is a qualitative with a case study approach. The research subjects consisted of 55 students who were then selected six students based on the reflective-impulsive cognitive style. The research instrument used consisted of an algebraic thinking test that adopted from TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study), MFFT (Matching Familiar Figure Test) and an interview guide. In this paper, researchers are focus on the exploration of students' algebraic thinking ability in solving problems on generalization and abstraction components. The finding showed that the reflective subjects and impulsive subjects are able to solve generalization and abstraction problems. The reflective and impulsive subjects are able to use patterns to solve problems related to generalizations. In addition, reflective and impulsive subjects are able to use symbols as an abstraction of the relationship between concepts and mathematical properties. However, the reflective subjects used the solution problem steps more systematic than impulsive subjects. The implication of the finding is that the individual differences such as cognitive style should be facilitated by the teachers so that students are more successful in learning mathematics.

Abstract

In the era of independent learning, there was a low interest in and understanding of Natural Sciences (IPA) subjects among students. The project-based learning model emerged as an alternative to overcoming these constraints. So researchers want to know the impact of project-based learning in primary schools. The method used is pre-experimental quantitative, with the design as follows: taking samples, pretest, providing guidance, post-test after guidance, looking for the average value of the pretest and post-test, and T test results. The research was conducted at Surakarta Basic School with a 30th grade student. Types of bound variables are the values and understanding of students in the V class of Natural Sciences (IPA) and project-based free learning variables. Collecting techniques with post-test and post-test as well as data analysis with pairs of T tests. Research finds that project-based learning models have an influence on elementary school students in the fifth grade in natural science subjects (IPA). Based on the analysis, results show that t hitung > t table (2.977 > 1.6991) means there are significant differences, so the project-based learning model has an influence on value and understanding. Abstract

Education influences students to be innovative, creative, and productive individuals. The study aims to find out the impact of gamification media use on educational activities in schools in Surakarta. Quantitative Research Methods with Survey Approaches to Higher Secondary Schools in Surakarta. Measurements in using SPSS 25 with Cronbach’s alpha variable learning media gamification and pupil activity, normality tests, heterocadastisity tests, deviations, correlation values, and determination coefficients (R square) The collection shows that H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted because the regression factor has a value of significance < 0.05, so some suggest that there is a significant influence between the use of gamified media and activation. The study results show that the correlations or relations values table (R) is 0.335 and a determination factor (R square) of 0.112 means that the influence of the gamifying media (X) on the activity (Y) is 11.2%, partially suggesting that there are significant influences between the usage of gamification media and student activity.
