Abstract

Background: Pain is a major clinical issue in both acute and chronic patients, affecting quality of life and causing psychological distress. Pharmacological therapy, particularly opioids, remains widely used but has limitations in the form of side effects and the risk of dependence. This has spurred the development of nonpharmacological interventions, one of which is Benson’s Relaxation Technique (BRT), which triggers a relaxation response and has the potential to reduce pain perception. Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness of BRT in reducing pain intensity across various clinical populations. Method: A literature search was conducted using three databases—PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science—for articles published between 2015 and 2025. Included studies comprised randomized controlled trials and quasi-experimental designs assessing the effectiveness of BRT. Risk of bias was analyzed using the Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tools. Results: Of the 705 articles identified, nine studies met the inclusion criteria, involving a total of 644 participants from India and Iran. Most studies demonstrated a significant reduction in pain intensity following BRT intervention, either as a standalone treatment or in combination with other therapies such as aromatherapy and psychoeducational interventions. Implementation protocols varied between 10–40 minutes per session with a frequency of 1–3 times per day, yet the results remained consistent. A risk of bias assessment indicated acceptable methodological quality. Conclusion: BRT has been proven to be an effective, safe, adaptable, and easy-to-practice complementary method for reducing pain. With its flexible and non-invasive nature, this technique has the potential to reduce reliance on pharmacological therapies. Large-scale, cross-cultural clinical trials are needed to confirm its long-term effectiveness.   Keywords: Benson's Relaxation Technique; Non-Pharmacological Therapy; Pain Intensity; Relaxation.

Abstract

Blood sampling is a mildly invasive medical procedure aimed at detecting diseases, assessing organ function, and evaluating the patient's overall health. It often causes pain, which can affect patient comfort. Pain perception during this procedure is influenced by both physiological and psychological factors. Therefore, safe and easily implemented non-pharmacological interventions are essential to alleviate pain intensity, and one such intervention is deep breathing relaxation. This descriptive observational study employed a quantitative one-shot case study design with a posttest-only approach. Pain intensity was measured after the deep breathing relaxation intervention was given, without any pretest. The findings revealed that after the deep breathing relaxation intervention, most respondents experienced mild pain (84 people, 70.6%), moderate pain (32 people, 26.9%), and severe pain (2 people, 1.7%). The results indicate that deep breathing relaxation significantly reduces pain intensity during blood sampling and can be effectively used as a non-pharmacological intervention to enhance patient comfort during medical procedures.

Abstract

Hypertension is a condition characterized by systolic blood pressure ≥140 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure ≥90 mmHg. In Indonesia, the prevalence of hypertension showed an increasing trend in 2018, reaching 34.1% based on national survey data. Effective control of hypertension is essential to prevent long-term complications and acute cardiovascular events. Non-adherence to antihypertensive medication can increase cardiac workload. In addition to adherence to pharmacological therapy, unhealthy dietary patterns also contribute to the rising prevalence of hypertension. Therefore, adequate health literacy is required to support patients with hypertension in maintaining regular medication use and adopting healthy lifestyle changes, particularly in dietary management. To determine the relationship between health literacy and dietary patterns, as well as medication adherence among patients with hypertension. This study employed a non-experimental descriptive analytic design with a cross-sectional approach involving 113 respondents. Data were collected using questionnaires with ordinal scales and analyzed using the Gamma test. The results showed a p-value of 0.00 (<0.05) with correlation coefficients of R = 0.982 and R = 1.000, indicating a positive and very strong relationship between health literacy and dietary patterns, as well as medication adherence. There is a positive and very strong relationship between health literacy and dietary patterns and medication adherence among patients with hypertension.

Abstract

Background: Family members who wait for patients in intensive care units frequently experience anxiety due to uncertainty, emotional burden, and fear related to critical illness. Non-pharmacological interventions such as Qur’anic murottal therapy and lavender aromatherapy have been increasingly explored because both approaches may promote relaxation, emotional comfort, and psychological stability in stressful clinical situations. However, evidence regarding their combined effectiveness for reducing anxiety among families in ICU waiting rooms remains limited and scattered across different clinical contexts. Objective: This systematic review aimed to examine the effectiveness of combined Ar-Rahman murottal therapy and lavender aromatherapy for reducing anxiety among family members in intensive care unit waiting rooms. Methods: This study used a systematic review design and followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA 2020) guideline. Literature searches were conducted in ClinicalKey for Nursing, SAGE Journals, ProQuest, and Google Scholar using combinations of keywords related to murottal therapy, lavender aromatherapy, anxiety, ICU, and family health. Studies published in English or Indonesian within the last 10 years were considered. Experimental and quasi-experimental studies were included, while irrelevant studies, methodologically weak articles, grey literature, and studies outside the review focus were excluded. Study selection, quality appraisal, and data extraction were conducted independently by two reviewers. Of 1,942 records initially identified, 12 full-text articles were assessed, 2 were excluded because of high risk of bias, and 10 studies were included in the final synthesis. Results: The included studies showed that the combination of Ar-Rahman murottal therapy and lavender aromatherapy was associated with reduced anxiety across several clinical contexts. The strongest evidence came from studies involving family members in ICU waiting rooms, where the combined intervention significantly reduced anxiety levels. Indirect evidence from preoperative, inpatient, and waiting-room populations supported the anxiolytic potential of both therapies. Overall, the findings suggested a consistent positive direction of effect, although the evidence remained heterogeneous in terms of population, setting, intervention duration, and measurement instruments. Conclusion: Combined Ar-Rahman murottal therapy and lavender aromatherapy appears to be a promising complementary intervention for reducing anxiety among family members in ICU waiting rooms. Nevertheless, further rigorous studies focusing specifically on ICU family populations are needed to strengthen the evidence base and support wider implementation in family-centered critical care nursing.
