Abstract

This paper investigates how English as a foreign language (EFL) learners construct their cultural identity and how globalisation influences this construction. It also explores studies on globalisation and English language learning in EFL contexts, focusing on students living in peripheral areas. 44 EFL learners aged between 18 and 25 years old were the participants in the study. The study utilized a mixed-method descriptive approach as the foundational framework for this research. The quantitative data consists of questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. They were collected using open-ended questions and then supplemented with semi-structured questions. The qualitative approach is further supported by previous research on cultural identity, such as cultural identity projection analysis and the influence of globalization on education. The study revealed that EFL English learners express their cultural identity through various aspects, such as their interactions with others, self-perception as students in a globalized world, and the impact of globalization on their identity. Students' cultural identity in peripheral areas is influenced by nationality, lifestyle, language, local community, education, cultural shock, mass media, and political beliefs. These elements influence the construction of an individual's cultural identity

Abstract

A typical organizational change management issue is organizationalresistance to change. This paper looks at literature on sources of resistance basing it on individual, group and organizational factors. At individual level, the following variables were found to be the reasons for resistance; perceived risk by not knowing what to expect next in the course of implementing change, insecurity of their jobs, and perceived that leaders cannot be trusted. Other factors include: The interaction between people in as group since this leads to peer pressure and maintaining of standards that have been set, therefore leading to resistance of change. Institutional factors such as ineffective communication, inadequate resources and rather more set organizational culture also contributeto resistance. The recommendations are derived from a review of the coping strategies with clear directions of invoking communication, engaging the employees, leadership involvement, and procuring more competent training and support. Lacking proper attention to the concerns and requirement of the employees at the workplace can be the major hurdle in the path of proper implementation of change management. Indeed, the outcomes show that resistance cannot be regarded as an only negative factor, but it is the possibility to discuss and develop. By adopting and applying all these points, an organization can therefore learn how to manage change and embed change in order to bring about the Right Change successfully and sustainably.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the cognitive and metacognitive strategies implemented by an English teacher at a Senior High School in Jakarta to understand the cognitive and metacognitive processes used in translating English text into Indonesian text, and vice versa, within a time frame of about 25-30 minutes. This qualitative study aims to explore how cognitive and metacognitive activities may impact students' translation process and help them develop sub-competencies by guiding them through the translation process and identifying strategies used to complete the task. The translation tasks involve translating English text into Indonesian text and vice versa. The tasks provide source text (ST) and Google translation (GT) output as references to assist in translating the texts that are put in post-editing. Each ST consists of 10 sentences that are translated using cognitive and metacognitive activities. The analysis used was the Think Aloud Protocol (TAP) based on Waden’s theory (1991). TAP was used to analyses the taxonomy of cognitive and metacognitive strategies. As the results of the study revealed, the frequency of cognitive strategies used in the Source Text (ST) is higher, indicating a higher complexity that requires additional cognitive effort. On the other hand, the use of cognitive activities decreased, affecting cognitive knowledge and reading strategies that influence cognitive activities. Additionally, metacognitive strategies were found to be more frequently associated with translational problems.

Abstract

Students learn English with different educational backgrounds at university level. Through this course, students can get the opportunity to develop their English competence for their learning success and future professional needs. To maximise the attainments of the goals, ESP teachers need to design ESP courses relevant to the students’ needs and conditions. This study surveyed 180 non-English major students to investigate their needs in learning English, learning attitude, and language learning strategies. The results reveal students still lacking in all English skills and language use. Therefore, ESP teachers should provide learning materials and inputs that can develop students’ English competence. ESP teachers need to struggle to make non-English major students hold a positive attitude toward English language learning. This finding showed that even though the students had confidence and motivation in learning English, they felt anxious and insecure during the teaching and learning process. Since this study involved non-English major students from different educational backgrounds, it was found that students’ language learning strategies were various. The results did not show certain strategies used by the students in learning English in higher education. ESP teachers should provide a variety of teaching techniques that can help students maximise their English language learning.

Abstract

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has prompted a global shift towards remote learning in education systems worldwide. This study aims to assess the impact of remote learning on student engagement by examining global educational responses to the crisis. Through a qualitative approach and extensive literature review using library research methods, this research explores the lessons learned from various countries' experiences with remote learning during the pandemic. The analysis focuses on key factors influencing student engagement, including access to technology, teacher-student interaction, curriculum adaptation, and socio-economic disparities. Findings reveal both challenges and opportunities associated with remote learning. While technological limitations and digital divide pose significant barriers to student engagement, innovative teaching strategies, collaborative efforts, and flexible curriculum adjustments have emerged as effective solutions. Furthermore, the study identifies the importance of teacher support, parental involvement, and student motivation in enhancing engagement in remote learning environments. The insights gained from this research provide valuable lessons for policymakers, educators, and stakeholders in designing effective strategies to improve student engagement in remote learning settings, both during crises and beyond.

Abstract

Article 875 of the Civil Code stipulates that a will expresses the testator’s wishes regarding beneficiaries and becomes effective after death. However, such provisions must not contravene Article 913, which guarantees the absolute rights (legitieme portie) of heirs. This study examines two issues: the legal consequences of a will addressed to a specific legitimary and the legal protection afforded to a legitimary when a will favors another beneficiary. The research employs a normative juridical method, using statutory, conceptual, analytical, and case study approaches, with data drawn from legal literature and legislation. Analysis was conducted through grammatical interpretation, analogical construction, and legal refinement. The findings show that a will directed to a particular legitimary has no unique legal consequences, since a will may designate any person as beneficiary. Nonetheless, the legitieme portie must not be impaired, as it constitutes a protected right under Articles 913 and 914 of the Civil Code. This protection applies from the opening of inheritance. The study underscores that while testamentary freedom is recognized, it is limited by the inviolable rights of legitimaries, ensuring fairness and legal certainty in inheritance law.
