Abstract

Syzygium polyanthum (Salam) leaves are widely utilized as both a culinary spice and a traditional medicinal plant in Indonesia. They are rich in phenolic compounds, which are known to exhibit potent antioxidant properties. This study aimed to quantitatively evaluate the in vitro antioxidant activity of the ethanolic extract of S. polyanthum leaves. The antioxidant capacity was determined using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay via visible spectrophotometry. The extract was tested at concentrations ranging from 12.5 to 200 ppm, with ascorbic acid serving as the positive control. The median inhibitory concentration (IC50) was calculated using linear regression analysis. The DPPH radical exhibited a maximum absorption wavelength (lmax) at 517.8 nm. The ethanolic extract of S. polyanthum leaves demonstrated a concentration-dependent radical scavenging activity, achieving 95.27 ± 0.17 % inhibition at 200 ppm. The calculated IC50 value for the extract was 36.37 ± 6.02 ppm, whereas the ascorbic acid standard exhibited an IC50 of 1.36 ± 0.08 ppm. According to the standard antioxidant potency classification, the ethanolic extract of S. polyanthum leaves falls into the "very strong" antioxidant category (IC50 < 50 ppm). These findings suggest that S. polyanthum leaves represent a highly promising natural source for the development of functional antioxidant products.

Abstract

Bernas SM, Fitriana M, Wijaya A, Fitri SNA. 2020. Effect of the seedling age and compost to the growth of palm date lulu (Phoenix Dactylifera L.) nursery and investigation of female seedling. Jurnal Lahan Suboptimal : Journal of Suboptimal Lands 9(2): 199-207.Indonesia imported very high amount of date palm fruits about 9.99 million kg or US$ 13.18 M, because of that it is necessary to develop a research about date palm seedling nursery and investigation of female date, since this is a dioecious plant. The aim of this investigation was to find out characteristics of female date seedling and the effects of seedling age and compost on seedling growth. There were 2 steps in this research: the first was application of compost on seedling (without and plus compost treatments) and the age of seedling (15 and 30 days old) for transplanting into polybag, the growth ability of plant was monitored. The second step was transplanting seedling at 30 days old into pan for investigation female date, which 20 seedlings were planted in one pan and replicated 3 times.  Results showed that compost increased roots and leaves growth on seedling.  Transplanted at 30 days old seedling had the ability to grow about 95% compared to 15 days old was only 45%. It was found that female seedling was about 25% and the rest (75%) was male or sterile. It is needed further investigation on growing female seedling in the field and can it produce fruit.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to study and cluster of Jatropha germplasm belonging to University of Sriwijaya. This research was conducted from September 2007 until July 2008. The research used 14 accessions of Jatropha taken from some regions in Indonesia, namely: Komering, Palembang, Yogyakarta, Indralaya, ATP2, Pontianak, Lahat, Pagaralam, Curup, Lampung, Medan Aceh Besar, Pidi and Gorontalo. Accessions of Jatropha curcas L. were planted at Agro Techno Park (ATP) Bakung village, Indralaya Utara district Ogan Ilir, South Sumatera using Randomized Complete Block Design. RAPD analysis using 20 primers was done at RGCI (Research Group on Crop Improvement), Bogor Agricultural University. Dendrogram based on RAPD analysis produced five groups that were: the first group was Komering, Lahat, Pidi, Indralaya, Aceh Besar, Pontianak and Curup. The second group was Palembang and ATP2. The third group was Pagaralam, Gorontalo, and Medan. Lampung was included in to fourth group. The fifth group was Yogyakarta. Dendrogram from morphological marker had also five groups. First group was: Komering, Indralaya, Pontianak. Lahat, and Pagaralam. Second group was: Palembang, Lampung, Pidi, Medan, and ATP2. Third group was: Curup. Fourth group was: Yogyakarta and Gorontalo. Fifth group was: Aceh Besar. The difference of member from each groups between dendrogram using RAPD and morphological markers indicated that the bands resulted from RAPD did not have relation with characters observed. Key words: Jatropha curcas L, RAPD analysis, Morphologycal marker, cluster analysis
