Abstract

Abstract The creativity of the community in processing various types of porang-based foods is needed. Porang is a local Indonesian commodity that has enormous potential to be exported and sold in the international market. Porang tubers are the raw material for making shirataki rice which has a very high selling price. To achieve this goal, training in making processed food from porang is required. This community service programme focuses on training assistance in porang-based food processing. To see how much the community understands after receiving training, on the third day a porang-based food cooking competition was held to motivate residents to make new innovations related to porang food recipes that they develop. The target location for this community service programme is in Karangpatihan Village, Pulung District, Ponorogo Regency by targeting PKK mothers in four hamlets including Jurugan, Selodono, Krajan, and Dungus. This community service activity was closed with a focus group discussion (FGD) to listen to the aspirations of PKK women and see the future of porang in the region. As is the case in several other areas, the constraints of the community in processing porang are related to the processing of porang which is still quite complicated. In addition, the itchiness caused by holding porang in the hand.

Abstract

Gunungkidul is one of the livestock-producing regions in Indonesia. Anthrax poses a significant threat to both livestock health and human well-being in the area. Various risk factors contribute to Anthrax transmission, including sociocultural factors, especially the Brandu Tradition. Brandu is a tradition in Gunungkidul where a group of community members collect funds to buy dead or sick cattle (usually cows) owned by one of the community members, at a meager price. The funds then were given to the cattle owner as a collective support for losing his cattle. The sick or dead cattle being slaughtered and the meat were distributed among the community members who participate in the funding. The tradition of distributing dead cattle meat has significantly contributed to the spread of zoonoses diseases, including Anthrax. This research aims to analyze the factors that underpin the Brandu tradition; to explore the role of this tradition in spreading Anthrax; as well as to propose an appropriate recommendation for the strategy to eliminate the Brandu tradition in Gunungkidul which fits within the local socio-cultural context. This research applies a qualitative ethnography approach. Findings of this research suggest that lack of knowledge about Anthrax disease as well as some socio-cultural, psychological, and economic factors underpin the Brandu tradition. However, other traditions of collecting funds, such as Jimpitan, to relieve economic burden due to cattle loss could be promoted to gradually replace the tradition of slaughtering sick or dead cattle.

Abstract

Pregnancy and childbirth bring significant biological and psychological changes, requiring the body to adapt. These changes, particularly in body shape, often lead some women to prioritize regaining or maintaining an ideal physical shape after giving birth. Despite the availability of modern biomedical care, Javanese women continue to practice traditional postpartum beauty treatments. This study examines the meanings of beauty and health for postpartum women through traditional practices.Using a qualitative ethnographic approach, the research was conducted in Yogyakarta with three informants—mothers who consistently practice traditional postpartum care. Data were collected through observations, interviews, field notes, and document analysis to understand the cultural practices, behaviors, habits, and interactions of the informants. The findings highlight that traditional postpartum care is instrumental in helping these women maintain physical attractiveness, strengthen their relationships with their husbands, and preserve family traditions. Key practices identified include the use of a gurita, stagen, corset, pilis, jamu beras kencur, and betel leaf decoction. These practices are regarded by the informants as essential for maintaining health and beauty after childbirth.

Abstract

Abstract

Modernization has shifted the meaning of the philosophy of mikul dhuwur mendhem jero or filial piety of children caring for parents or the elderly in rural Java. Changes in family structure have led to fewer children being able to care for their parents, although the value of filial piety remains in the hearts of children. It is important to explore the shift in meaning in local wisdom-based elderly care mechanisms in the context of modernization. This article aims to describe the importance of redefining the Javanese philosophy of parental care due to changes in family structure and relationship patterns.  The research used qualitative approach. The study was conducted in Bantul, Yogyakarta between May and July 2023. There eight informants involve in this study who are either elderly or caregivers. Data was collected using in-depth interview and observation. The findings show that even though there are four pattern of elderly care (family care, paid care, self-care, and social care), family care is still favor by members of the family. Material becomes a benchmark for the level of devotion to parents that they recognize together, and the role of social mechanisms is still running well, although limited. The level of filial piety of children to their parents is reflected in the quality of care and how well they pay attention. This research emphasizes the adaptation of traditional values to modern realities while maintaining the essence of children's filial responsibilities in the Javanese cultural context.

Abstract

Breast cancer is still one of the leading causes of death in Indonesia. The multifactorial causes of breast cancer, including heredity, carries a risk for the sufferers’ relatives. Vigilance in female relatives of breast cancer patients increases due to hereditary risk factors for having the same disease. This anthropological study aimed to reveal the mosaic of breast cancer patients’ female relatives’ knowledge of such a risk and their efforts to prevent it. Qualitative data collection through interviews was conducted with 13 female family members of breast cancer patients in Yogyakarta aged 17-65 years. The data analysis was done through an emic approach by examining the informants’ views on the situation and their solutions. All of the informants believed that breast cancer is a malignant and deadly disease if it is not detected early and not properly treated. They were all fully aware of their risk as a family member to have the same disease. Their preventive measures included medical (early examination, breast self-examination, laboratory check, or consultation with the doctor) and non-medical (changes in eating and drinking behavior, reducing stress, exercising, and wearing masks). Besides, they also made religious efforts by praying to God to be given a healthy life and for the patients to be healed and their offspring to be free from this disease.
