Abstract

Producing research articles requires clearly, logically, rationally, and empirically substantiating complicated ideas. Regarding that, many professors struggle to have their articles published in highly regarded publications and require references; for instance, the rhetorical move pattern. Many studies have analyzed the rhetorical structure of articles, but few have investigated the rhetorical move of the research articles produced by lecturers by specifically comparing their publications in high-impact versus low-impact Scopus-indexed journals. Using a descriptive-comparative qualitative design, this study seeks to investigate the moves of low-impact and high-impact articles of the two social humanities lecturers of a state university in Indonesia. Eight articles were analyzed through the move framework proposed by Maswana (2015). The results revealed that the rhetorical moves from each section were organized with significant conformities and minor non-conformities.Especially, the authorsemphasized the goals, procedures, and outcomes of the publications in the abstract section. Furthermore, the writers provided references to the existing literature and the goal of the research to assist the reader in understanding the theory applied in the papers. On the other hand, deviations from the norm are displayed in the methodology section due to variations in how the study was conducted, particularly the data processing phase. The authors’ attention to conveying the research’s specific findings and their significance was in the findings and discussion section. The results of this study can be used as a reference for Indonesian researchers who are striving to publish papers in international journals toward a more visible and impactful publication.

Abstract

Although there have been many studies that discuss meaning, both in Indonesian and in Minangkabau, no research has been found that examines the lexical meaning and cultural meaning of Minangnese archaic words in pasambahan. This is important to study because pasambahan contains advice, manners, cultural values, and educational values that have existed for a long time and must be passed down. Therefore, there is a need for research that explores the lexical meaning and meaning of the cultural context contained in archaized words in pasambahan. This research uses a qualitative design. The source of data comes from a study entitled Identification of Archaic Words in the Book of the Philosophy of Penghulu Clothing Jo Pidato Aluo Pasambahan of Minangkabau Custom. The data was tested in an interview with the author of the book. The results show that of the 34 archaic words studied, 26 words have lexical meaning and cultural meaning, and 8 words only have lexical meaning. The cultural meaning contains advice to tribal leaders, advice for daily life, a description of Minangkabau nature, a description of Minangkabau traditional houses, and manners, advice on religion, and advice on decision-making.

Abstract

This study discusses the vitality of the Tae’ language in Palopo city, South Sulawesi. Vitality of Tae’ language can be seen both from its use as a language of daily communication, the number of speakers, documentation, government policies  related  to  the language, and the inclusion of the language in the school curriculum. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method, in  which  interviews  and  observations  were employed. The subjects interviewed were government officials in Palopo city, as well as the people of Palopo. Findings reveal that the vitality of the Tae language in Palopo is vulnerable to extinction. This is characterized by two main indicators: i) very low use of Tae’ language even in the family domain which affects low language transmission as well ;) and the absence of  govermental  policies  in  preserving  and  maintaining  Tae’  language  as  the  identity  of  the Palopo people and the Indonesian.

Abstract

Abstract

AbstractThis research examines cultural reproduction strategies for maintaining local languages in elementary schools in Indonesia. The academic struggle for local language maintenance programs needs to be refined with alternative thinking and solutions. The study was conducted using a qualitative approach and a library research and outlines various findings regarding local language maintenance programs in elementary schools. Maintaining local languages in the management of elementary schools in Indonesia can be done through Pierre Bourdieu’s cultural reproduction strategies through programs orientated towards strengthening aspects of 1) Habitus, which focuses on externalizing awareness of the importance of preserving local languages; 2) capital, which focuses on resources and supporting capacity for local language preservation; and 3) arena, which focuses on educational and learning activities. The design of strengthening local language preservation through habitus is carried out in several steps: 1) applying linguistic knowledge; 2) promoting language loyalty, pride, and awareness of norms; 3) engaging in literature on language preservation and authenticity; and 4) fostering a positive language attitude. Meanwhile, the capital strengthening program through resources and carrying capacity is carried out: 1) the implementation of the Indonesian Language Policy; 2) the promotion of family, neighborhood, and religious values; 3) linguistic diversity. The strengthening program implemented through the arena includes: 1) strategies that include formal learning, extracurricular activities, and mandatory activities; and 2) technology, documentation, and revitalization. Keywords: habitus, capital, arena, cultural reproduction.AbstrakPenelitian ini mengkaji strategi reproduksi budaya dalam pemertahanan bahasa daerah pada sekolah dasar di Indonesia. Abstract

Medical terminology, previously reserved for professionals, has become increasingly prevalent in everyday discourse, particulary following the COVID-19 pandemic. The emergence of these terms is not spontaneous; rather, they are meticulously crafted by experts within their respective fields. This research examines the formation of Indonesian medical terms, with a specific focus on affixation. The purpose of this research is to find out the affixation process used in Indonesian medical terms. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative with the data source of medical terms found on the Halodoc platform. The choice of Halodoc is aligned with the rising popularity of health applications during the pandemic. The result shows that from 1492 medical terms data, 202 words (13.5%) are formed through affixation process. There are foreign language affixation processes (prefixes and suffixes) and Indonesian language affixation processes (prefixes, suffixes, confixes). Foreign language affixation shapes the term to be more complex, while the use of Indonesian affixation only changes the word class. The results of this study are also expected to represent the characteristics of the Indonesian language in forming words, especially medical terms.

Abstract

Publishing scientific papers, particularly research articles (RAs), has become a requirement and essential component for academics’ life. As a result, there is a growing need for academics to produce research articles for international publications. However, many writers, especially novice and inexperienced ones, still struggle to achieve this goal because they fail to adhere to the accepted conventions. This study attempts to look into the rhetorical moves in full-length English RAs written by reputable Indonesian lecturers from the hard and soft sciences disciplines in the early stage of their careers. This study employed a modified framework of analysis proposed by Maswana et al. in 2015. The findings showed that, in general, the papers’ rhetorical structures from abstract to conclusion were quite comparable, reflecting the universal writing rules of a research paper. However, the striking difference lies in the method section, specifically the absence of Move 5 in all soft sciences articles. This may be due to disciplinary conventions. The findings of the study may offer insightful instructional material that can assist students or researchers in honing their academic writing abilities. Keywords: early-career; full-length English RAs; hard sciences; move analysis; rhetorical structure; soft sciences.

Abstract

Producing quality research articles requires researchers to have a comprehensive understanding of move analysis, a structural approach that uses moves and steps to effectively present arguments and findings. Despite extensive research on move analysis structures, there remains a gap in frameworks addressing the move-step structures across all sections of highly cited research articles, particularly in the field of English Language Teaching (ELT). This study seeks to fill this gap by analyzing the structural patterns of move-step sequences in ELT research articles, providing a practical framework for novice researchers. Employing a multi-framework approach, Hyland's (2000) model was used for Abstracts, Swales' (2004) for Introductions, Cotos' (2017) for Methods, and Moreno and Swales' (2018) for Results and Discussion sections. A corpus of 30 highly cited ELT research articles indexed in Scopus was analyzed. The findings reveal that specific moves, such as presenting background, reporting the research method and results are consistent across Abstracts, and topic generalization, indicating a gap, and announcing present research across Introductions. Similarly, the Method sections exhibit two dominant moves: contextualizing study methods and describing the study, while the Results and Discussion sections highlight four key moves, including reporting background information, presenting and highlighting results, and interpreting and explaining results. This research underscores the importance of recognizing conventional and optional moves in crafting high-quality articles. The proposed framework is expected to serve as a comprehensive guide for novice researchers in producing impactful and well-structured ELT research articles, contributing to the field's scholarly discourse. Keywords: ELT research article; move analysis; research framework

Abstract

This study aims to explore the acquisition of English morphemes which is the second language used by children through their interaction in online games. English morphemes, which have different structures from Indonesian morphemes, are analyzed based on their types, especially on root, affixation, stem and base. This study uses a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis. The research sample consists of children aged 7 to 12 years old who have experience playing online games. Observations were made to identify the use of relevant English morphemes. The results show that children can understand and use roots both as content words and function words. However, not all lexical morphemes are found in children's speech, nor are bound roots as part of morphemes. The types of affixes used by children in playing online games are affixes at the beginning and end. There is no use of infixes. Root, stem and base which are word building elements have been used by children in the context of online games.
