Abstract

This research aims to analyzed the types of grammatical cohesion and analyzed the function of grammatical cohesion of speaker's utterance in Venom: "Let There be Carnage" Movie Script. Grammatical cohesion is one part of cohesive devices. Grammatical cohesion is very important to format the sense of sentences. Grammatical cohesion can be in the form of words, utterances, phrases that exist in the text to correlate one element to the other element. This study used Qualitative method to analyzed the data. Then, the data were collected from every character's utterance which contains grammatical cohesion in Venom: "Let There be Carnage" Movie Script. From the result of the analysis, it was discovered all types of grammatical cohesion. Then, the function of the grammatical cohesions are to indicate reference pronoun, addition, time order, spatial order, concession in argument, cause and effect, comparison, and contrast. They are used to join sentences together to make ideas more understandable to the reader.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine and interpret the swearing words in the "Euphoria" series, as well as the series types and functions. The study used descriptive qualitative techniques, such as data analysis and narrative presentation of the findings. The data was taken from the “Euphoria” television series season one. The results of the study are There are 100 data found in the “Euphoria” television series. There are types of swearing words are related to Sex (50data), 50% and then it serves five functions, related to Excrement (22data), 22% and then it serves five functions, related to Animal (10data), 10% and then it serves three functions, related to Personal Background (7data), 7% and then it serves one functions, related to taboo or religion or oath (3data), 3% and then it serves one functions, related to Mental Illness (6data), 6% and then it serves two functions and types of swearing words related to Racism (2data), 2%. and then it serves two functions Additionally, there are five functions of swearing words that are represented by a type of swearing word in the “Euphoria” tv series. Cathartic Swearing 16%, abusive swearing 32%, emphatic swearing 12%, idiomatic swearing 32%, and Dysphemistic Swearing 6%. As a result, this data is dominated by related to sex for types of swear words by 50 % and the same result in the function of swear words, namely abusive and idiomatic at 32%

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze the types and the functions of hyponymy used in Oliver Twist’s novel by Charles Dickens. In the books, Charles Dickens tells the life story of Oliver Twist that has a lot of moral stories in it. However, hyponymy is widely used in the novel as an explanation to the words so the readers can understand clearly about every word in the novel. The method used in carrying out the study was a descriptive qualitative method. Therefore, the results of this research that were taken from Oliver Twist, a children's novel by Charles Dickens (1838) are 38 data that are qualified as 5 types of hyponymies such as 10 data hyponymy of the body part (26%), 7 data of hyponymy object (18%), 9 data of hyponymy family (23%), 6 data of hyponymy feelings (15%), and 5 data of hyponymy of buildings (13%) as the least frequent relation in the novel.

Abstract

This research aims to determine what type of ambiguity and meaning are found in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. The study's data was gathered from a 2019 American fantasy film titled Maleficent: Mistress of Evil that was made by Walt Disney Pictures. Film is a form of visual art that uses moving images to simulate experiences or otherwise convey ideas, narratives, perceptions, feelings, beauty, or atmosphere. The study's theoretical framework is based on Stephen Ullmann's (1977) theory. The researcher used a qualitative approach because the data in this study is delivered in the form of words or sentences. The researcher discovered data on homonymy, homograph, homophones, polysemy, and structural ambiguity. Due to a lack of data, the results of this study revealed six data points. The lexical data (66.7%) dominates this analysis out of the six. Following the phonological data (16.7%) and structural data (16.6%).

Abstract

Discourse analysis studies how sentences and utterances (speech) combine to form texts and interactions and how those texts and interactions fit into our everyday sphere (Jones, 2012). This study aims to measure the lexical density in The Novel “Mrs. Dalloway” by Virgina Woolf. Descriptive qualitative were used to conduct the study. The data were taken by collecting and identifying the lexical items in that novel and then calculating the lexical density in the novel Mrs. Dalloway. A novel is a literary work that reflects a story about a specific human experience with a certain length, including a complex plot, a variety of settings, and several characters (Soemardjo, 1989). The result of this research from 10 Data was obtained that the lexical density of this research was reaching (51%).  The lexical items or content words found in this study were: noun 22 (40%), verb 13 (23,6%), adverb 8 (14,6%), adjective 12 (21,8%), and the highest lexical density was noun standing for (40%).

Abstract

This research titled Figurative Language in Joko Widodo Speech. The purpose of this research is to analyze and describe the figure of speech in Joko Widodo speech, the types of figurative language and its meaning of his speech. A qualitative method was used to classify and analyze the data. The technique used in collecting the data was searching videos of Joko Widodo speech. The data used Perrine (1963) and Taylors theories (1981: 167) that many types of figurative language that divide into three classifications namely comparison and substitution, representation by substitution, and contrast by the discrepancy. The data was taken from Joko Widodo Speech in Annual Meeting International Monetary Fund-World Bank in Bali, World Economic ASEAN Forum in Hanoi and US-ASEAN Forum. The author found 9 figurative languages in Joko Widodo speech in the international event; there were 7 allusions, 1 metaphor, and 1 assonance. The conclusion of this research, the using of figurative language is an alternative to implied the literal meaning which can attract the readers or listeners attention and evoke their imagination.

Abstract

This study focus on analysis of translation used in translating usage instruction of beauty products. The purpose of this research are (1) to identify translation method which are used in translating usage instruction of beauty products. (2) to identify translation technique which are used in translating usage instruction of beauty products. (3) and to identify the shift in meaning that occurs in translating usage instructions of beauty products. Data sources used are several beauty products that use English and Indonesian translations. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive approach. The theoretical basis of this research is Newmarks (1988) translation method theory, Molina & Albirs (2002) translation technique theory, and Nida (1975) shift in the translation process theory. The results of this study show that there are: (1) 3 translation methods used are 40% of data using the free translation method, 40% of the semantic method, 20% of the adaptation method. (2) 4 translation techniques used are 40% using adaptation techniques, 20% transposition, 20% linguistic amplification, and 20% amplification. (3) there was a shift in translation in the translating usage instruction of beauty products, namely 40% Changing information (skewing of information), 40% Information gain, and 20% Loss of information.
