Abstract

This study was conducted to analyze the students 'initial and final understanding after the application of JITT with 3D animation, to identify students' responses and arguments, and to determine the impact of using JITT with 3D animation. This research involved 43 students of the 6th semester of the 2019-2020 academic year of the Physics Education study program of the Universitas PGRI Kanjuruhan Malang who took solid state physics course. Students' initial and final understanding was analyzed through responses and arguments presented during the pretest, while the impact of JITT application with 3D animation was analyzed based on the results of the pretest and posttest as well as student responses during the learning process expressed through short interviews and discussions. The qualitative and quantitative data generated from the mixed-method approach were analyzed simultaneously. The results show that the students understand that the atomic radius for all the different crystal lattices is the same, namely a/2. This was awakened by an early understanding of the general definition of the radius. However, after following the JITT stages with 3D animation, their understanding changed that the atomic radius of each crystal lattice is different in length. In addition, the results of statistical analysis showed that there was a very significant increase in the students' mastery of concepts from an average of 26.9 to 96.7. Meanwhile, the N-gain value is very high, namely 0.96 in the very effective category, which illustrates that JITT with 3D animation has had a high impact on students' understanding of atomic radius in the concept of crystal geometry.

Abstract

This research aims to optimize the critical thinking skills and information communication technology (ICT skills) of students regarding temperature fluctuations material through the implementation of a hybrid discovery learning method. The hybrid discovery learning method provides the efficacy and efficiency of the physics learning process at three Malang Junior High Schools. The type of research used was quasi-experimental with a post-test only group design. There were 143 students enrolled in this research, divided into six study groups. The experimental class consisted of 74 students, while the control class comprised 69 students. The data were collected using a multiple-choice test instrument that evaluated critical thinking skills at the cognitive level. The experimental group achieved an average score of 71.1, while the control group achieved 60.1. Furthermore, data pertaining to ICT skill was gathered through the utilization of observation sheet and questionnaires during the learning process. The Wilk’s Lambda in the Manova test gave results of Sig. (0,000) < (0,05). This demonstrates that the hybrid discovery learning model influences students' critical thinking and ICT skills. Therefore, the implementation of the hybrid discovery learning to temperature fluctuations material can optimize the learning process on the critical thinking and ICT skills.

Abstract

This research aims to develop an instrument for assessing understanding distance and displacement concepts. Distance and Displacement Inventory (DDI) is an instrument constructed in multi-representations, including picture, table, graphic, mathematical, and verbal representations. This instrument is in multiple-choice format with ten questions to assess students' understanding of distance traveled and displacement. DDI development refers to R&D design by Borg&Gall and test development flowchart by Beichner. DDI was applied to 357 students in Indonesia who had taken introductory physics courses. Student answers were analyzed to determine the DDI's psychometric properties and structural analysis. The analysis results show that the DDI is adequate for assessing students' understanding of travel distance and displacement concepts. Meanwhile, the structural analysis of students' knowledge results shows that students have different perceptions of each question item according to their representation. Furthermore, students who understand the concept of distance traveled and displacement in one representation may need help understanding it correctly in another representation. This research implies the necessity of designing learning designs based on multi-representations and teaching students about the changes between these representations.
