Abstract

AbstractThe implementation of various policies in response to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic around the world was carried out to prevent an increase in the number of positive COVID-19 patients from causing various kinds of impacts, one of which is increasing the number of internet addictions. The purpose of this research was to find out how social psychology considered the increasing number of internet addictions. The method is used for explanatory purposes with a qualitative approach. The analysis results show that the causative factors that correlate with the increase in the number of internet addictions are psychological factors and the purpose and motivation of using the internet. Other theories that can explain the increase are social exchange and interdependence theory, fearful attachment theory, and social comparison theory. We can prevent an increase in the number of Internet addictions by exercising self-control, both independently and with the assistance of others. If there is strong motivation and positive self-efficacy, these efforts will be maximized.

Abstract

Catcalling incidents are a form of street harassment that occurs in public spaces, conducted by strangers through verbal expressions and behavioral intentions with sexual nuances. This research investigates the psychological dynamics of catcalling events as women perceive them. A qualitative method involves a phenomenological approach and recruiting four participants using purposive sampling. Data were collected from semi-structured interviews, with thematic data analysis using the qualitative data management software NVivo 12. The trustworthiness strategy of the research includes reflexive journaling during the thematic analysis process and a participant-checking procedure. The findings show that catcalling incidents contribute to negative feelings and destructive self-perceptions. In the short term, the psychological impacts of catcalling include fear and worry, discomfort, anxiety, and increased alertness when facing unsafe situations, while the long-term impacts include feelings of guilt, criticism of one’s body shape and appearance, and feeling ashamed of one’s identity as a woman. The research argues that negative body images resulting from catcalling incidents contribute to the risk of low self-esteem.

Abstract

Phubbing, the act of ignoring others in social settings by focusing on one’s smartphone, has become a prevalent issue among adolescent K-Pop fans. This behavior is closely linked to social media addiction and Fear of Missing Out (FoMO), as these fans often seek constant updates about their idols and social networks. The excessive use of social media to satisfy their curiosity and avoid missing out on information can lead to a significant increase in phubbing behavior. This study aims to investigate the effect of FoMO and social media addiction on phubbing behavior among adolescent K-Pop fans. Using a quantitative correlational approach, 193 adolescents aged 10-21 years were surveyed. The study employed the Generic Scale of Phubbing (GSP), Online Fear of Missing Out Scale (ON-FoMO), and the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS) to assess phubbing behavior, FoMO, and social media addiction, respectively. The results indicate that the majority of participants have low levels of FoMO (48.7%) but high levels of social media addiction (46.1%), with 53.4% exhibiting low phubbing behavior. Multiple linear regression analysis shows a significant positive effect of both FoMO and social media addiction on phubbing behavior, with FoMO contributing 36% and social media addiction contributing 22.9% to the variance in phubbing behavior. Together, these variables explain 58.9% of phubbing behavior among the participants. The study supports the Usability and Satisfaction Theory, emphasizing the role of FoMO and social media addiction in promoting excessive smartphone use during social interactions. Practical implications include the need for interventions to manage adolescents' social media usage and mitigate the psychological effects of FoMO to enhance healthy social engagement. Future research should explore longitudinal relationships and consider socio-environmental factors to better understand the causes of phubbing behavior in adolescents.

Abstract

Emerging adults who are identical in their search for self-identity are prone to impulsive buying behavior. Body image, with self-esteem as a mediator, may influence the tendency to buy impulsively. Therefore, this research aims to determine how the dimensions of body image influence the tendency of impulsive buying mediated by self-esteem in 100 people aged 18–25 in Malang City. This research uses a quantitative approach with the incidental sampling technique. There are three scales used that have been adapted previously, namely the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), Impulse Buying Tendency (IBT) Scale, and Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire–Appearance Scale (MBSRQ–AS). The analysis technique used is mediation analysis with the bootstrapping method with the help of PROCESS V4.3 for SPSS software. The results show that self-esteem has a fully mediating role in the influence of one of the dimensions of body image, namely the appearance evaluation dimension, on the tendency of impulsive buying in emerging adults in Malang City. This means that emerging adults with low appearance evaluations tend to have low levels of self-esteem. Likewise, emerging adults with low self-esteem tend to engage in impulsive buying behavior. This also applies vice versa.
