Abstract

Abstrak. This study focuses on English and non-English students' perspectives on their experiences with global English, along with their perceptions of the current status of English (CSE), varieties of English (VE), strategies for multilingual/multicultural communication (SMC), and English speakers' identities (ESI). There were a total of 75 participants in this survey. We used IBM SPSS Statistics 22 to perform an EFA on the collected data. Varimax rotations and principal components analysis (PCA) were used to extract data. We examined three factors: eigenvalues more than 1, factor loadings less than 0.5, and communality less than 0.5. Cronbach's alpha and composite reliability might be used to determine the sample's reliability with a value of 0.7. (CR). Cronbach's alpha values for each structure varied between 0.71 and 1.00, whereas CR values ranged between 0.79 and 0.99. Using the average variance extracted (AVE), we determined that the convergent validity varied from 0.57 to 0.97 with a 0.50 threshold. Each construct used 3 CSE items, 4 VE items, 4 SMC items, and 3 ESI items. The pooled mean and standard deviation were used to calculate descriptive statistics for the four constructs. We conducted a t-test on separate samples to see if English and non-English students' perspectives on global English varied substantially. The results suggested that neither group saw differences in their perception of the current status of English, varieties of English, strategies for multilingual/multicultural communication, and English speakers' identity. The implications of using worldwide English teaching materials and approaches are underlined.

Abstract

When communicating with others, people may be unable to distinguish between speaker and hearer, yet the dialogue can continue. As a result, a pragmatic role is required. Nonetheless, many pragmatic examples may fail for various reasons, including cross-cultural comprehension and even grammatical form misinterpretation. This situation occurs not just in real life but also in the classroom. This essay aims to examine the pragmatics of English students' dialogue in speaking class. The conversation in speaking class begins with a definition of the Pragmatic and Speech Act and Pragmatic Failures. It will be followed by examining several pragmatic failure dialogues in an EFL speaking class. According to this study, there are ten pragmatic failure discussions. The researchers discovered the following situations based on those conversations: first, there are different types of speech acts in English students' conversations in the speaking class, such as directive, assertive, and proclamation, which are all based on Levinson's theory. Furthermore, pragmatic failure occurs in English students' conversations in speaking class and is referred to as pragmalinguistics failure.

Abstract

The rising prominence of remote speaking practice in education and professional development underscores its critical significance. Enabled by advancing technology, remote platforms offer unprecedented convenience and accessibility for individuals to refine speaking skills. Research explores the efficacy of remote speaking practice, drawing on previous studies that have examined technology-mediated communication for language learning and public speaking training. Building on this foundation, this study investigates students' perceptions of remote speaking tasks' impact on pronunciation, speaking skills, and confidence. Through a qualitative approach involving open-ended surveys distributed to 19 English students at one of the Islamic private universities in Indonesia, attitudes and motivations shaping students' perspectives are explored. Analysis using NVivo 12 highlights the pivotal role of remote speaking tasks in improving pronunciation skills and fostering English speaking proficiency. Moreover, students' recognition of confidence as integral to successful language learning underscores the importance of supportive learning environments. The findings underscore the necessity of integrating remote speaking tasks into language curricula to enhance pronunciation and speaking proficiency effectively while emphasizing the pivotal role of confidence in facilitating language acquisition. These insights hold significant implications for language education, advocating for the incorporation of remote speaking practice to empower learners in developing fluency and proficiency in virtual environments.

Abstract

This research is based on the problems teachers have faced. where teachers must be able to create a more effective and active learning atmosphere. In the independent curriculum, the teacher is a facilitator who helps students to achieve learning goals. In this case, a learning strategy is very necessary to support learning achievement. The urgency of this research raises existing problems at this school this problem will be followed up later That. the main aim of this research is to explain the method used in special learning for teaching English with the Merdeka curriculum in junior high schools and also the challenges as an English teacher in the Merdeka curriculum. This research will utilize descriptive qualitative research. This research will later be carried out at one of the junior high schools in Bojonegoro in the 2023-2024 academic years. In this research, the researcher will use observation, an interview instrument to collect the data. In this research, the researcher will analyze the data using three concurrent flows including data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion/verification. the result of previous chapter, there are six challenges faced by teachers, namely method do teachers, mother tongue, motivation, lack of vocabulary, facilities, learning material. All of these challenges have been overcome well, namely by providing vocabulary since sitting in the seventh grade class, then providing student motivation during learning, using strategy group discussions to develop interaction between friends. In learning, of course, it is not always as expected, there are many obstacles faced by teachers. By providing motivation when learning, it is hoped that students will be able to be more active in studying

Abstract

In the complex tapestry of human interaction, spoken communication remains an essential and timeless aspect of our social fabric. The study of spoken communication holds deep significance, exploring the core of human connection and interaction. The ability to express thoughts, emotions, and ideas verbally is fundamental for identity expression, relationship building, and navigating social complexities. While numerous researchers have contributed valuable insights to the study of spoken communication, a notable gap exists in strategies for English speaking tailored to diverse learner profiles. Existing studies offer general strategies for improving English speaking skills, yet they often neglect individual differences, learning styles, and cultural backgrounds. The proposed research seeks to address this gap by investigating and identifying personalized methodologies that enhance language acquisition for individuals with diverse linguistic backgrounds, learning styles, and cultural contexts. Conducted at Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Sunan Giri, Bojonegoro, the study involved 40 student participants from the English language department, utilizing semi-structured interviews for data collection. Employing a descriptive qualitative research approach, the investigation found that sequential speaking learning strategies used by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners to enhance self-efficacy in an English classroom. These strategies encompass cognitive, affective, memory, social, and metacognitive approaches, revealing a notable absence of the compensation strategy among EFL learners. The research contributes to the understanding of nuanced approaches to spoken English, shedding light on effective strategies personalized to individual needs and addressing a crucial gap in existing studies.

Abstract

This article discusses community service activities aimed at training teachers of SMP IT Insan Permata Bojonegoro in utilizing learning technology, especially in making e-books using AI. This training aims to improve teachers' understanding of e-book applications, create teaching materials that can be accessed by students without being constrained by time and place, and provide better material visualization alternatives. The teachers are divided into groups to create e-books with relevant subject matter, involving hands-on practice in the creation of e-books. The comprehensive reflection and evaluation stage is an important step to ensure that community service goals are maximally achieved and provide sustainable benefits for teachers at SMP IT Insan Permata. This training is expected to open up new opportunities for a more modern and inclusive learning approach, as well as increase teachers' active involvement and participation in the learning process.

Abstract

This development research aims to develop Eco-ELT textbooks for young learners. This research uses the Research and Development (RD) method with the 4-D (Four D) model. The development steps carried out by researchers are 1). Define, 2). Design, 3). Develop, and 4). Disseminate. The participants in this research were 31 fourth-grade elementary school students, 14 students from SDN Glagahwangi 1, and 17 students from SDN Glagahwangi 2. Data collection techniques used interviews and Likert scale questionnaires to obtain responses. Validation is carried out by material expert and media expert. To determine the suitability of the product is obtained from the results of trials and responses from educators and students. The media developed was tested on 14 fourth-grade students at SDN Galagahwangi 1 Sugihwaras Bojonegoro. The results of material expert validation produced a score of 122 with a percentage of 97.6%, including very valid criteria related to contextual evaluation factors, practicality, and suitability of content. With very valid criteria, the average score for graphic feasibility elements obtained in media expert validation was 95% with a total score of 129. In limited-scale testing, students at SDN Glagahwangi 1 Sugihwaras Bojonegoro obtained an average score of 92.5% of the total score of 972 is a very worthy criterion. Meanwhile, the average answer score from educators is 94% with a total score of 141 which is in the very worthy range. From these results, it is concluded that Eco-ELT-based textbooks for young students are adequate and appropriate for use to support the English language learning process in the fourth-grade elementary school independent curriculum.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of peer teaching in reducing public speaking anxiety among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. Public speaking anxiety is a prevalent issue among EFL learners, hindering their language development and performance. This research employs an evaluative survey design to assess the impact of peer teaching on public speaking anxiety among 67 EFL students. The results show a statistically significant reduction in public speaking anxiety after participating in peer teaching sessions, with a mean anxiety score decreasing from 64.23 to 54.44. The qualitative data further supports the quantitative findings, indicating that peer teaching fosters a collaborative learning environment, reduces fear of judgment, and provides constructive feedback, leading to increased confidence and reduced anxiety. The study highlights the pedagogical value of peer teaching in EFL classrooms, suggesting that it can be a useful tool in addressing public speaking anxiety and improving language learning outcomes.

Abstract

Each language, including English, uses deixis differently due to various distinct settings, such as grammatical restrictions and cultural or customary backgrounds in society. Descriptive qualitative research is the method used to analyze the data. As data-gathering instruments, human instruments and text analysis were used. All of which are used in written form to refer to the speaker, recipients, and references who are not speakers or recipients. According to the research, the personal pronoun deixis is most commonly used in the human subject's second, third, and possessive plural forms. Additionally, deixis with a temporal focus is used in CNN International articles as speech moments, and there are two different times: the "coding" and "receiving" times (the time of recovering information by the listener who is informed). Abstract

Linguistics is divided into two categories: macro linguistics and micro linguistics. Macro linguistics is divided into three categories: psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, and ethnography. Micro linguistics is divided into several categories, including morphology, phonetics, phonology, syntax, semantics, sociolinguistics, and pragmatics. The goal of this study is to discover and analyze the many types of conversational implicature and maxim violations in Raya and The Last Dragon. Don Hall and Carloz López Estrada directed Raya and The Last Dragon, which was released in 2021. The descriptive qualitative method was employed to perform this research. The authors used Yule's theory (1996) to examine the different types of conversational implicature and the maxim of politeness. In cooperative principles, there are four maxims and two types of conversational implicature. The findings of this study show that: (1) In Raya and The Last Dragon, there are two types of conversational implicature; generic and particularized. Generalized conversational implicature is the most common type of conversational implicature seen in Raya and The Last Dragon. (2) There are six maxims as seen in Raya and The Last Dragon: maxim of wisdom, award, generacy, sympathy, consensus, and humility.
