Abstract

The success of deer (Cems spp.) breeding in captivity requires understanding of the basic reproductive characteristics of hinds and stags and factors affecting their performance.Birth-pulse breeding season is less pronounced in tropical regions than in artic and temperate regions. However, most ungulate species in semi-arid and arid tropical regions do show seasonality in breeding (birth-pulse breeding season) and there is also evidence that certain ungulate species, especially from the family Bovidae and Cervidae, in humid tropical regions tend to have more or less distinct breeding season. For example, Cervus timorensis has a breeding season in July - September and an onset of calving in May - June with the length of gestation period of 267 - 284 days.Little is known about the reproductive characteristics of Cems unicolor, but information about Cervus elophus in New Zealand possibly can be used as a comparative reference. The management of stags at mating is a crucial factor in reproduction and much of it is related to their competitive behaviour. When more than one stag is running with a group of hinds, a hierarchy will be established and one of them, usually the largest, becomes dominant and can control a large harem. With or without antlers, stags become extremely belligerent and dangerous to handle during the rut, so it is wise to introduce them into mating groups well before mating starts. Early introduction may result in unnecessary exhaustion of stags before mating actually starts, because stags reduce their feeding activities dramatically while defending a harem.

Abstract

At the end decade of 20 th century, the rate of world tourism development was related to "nature-oriented"  travelling so high. In tourism terminology, this travelling is conceived as ecotourism. Almost all countries  in the world respond to this new concept of tourism enthusiastically, in particular, developing countries which rich with natural areas with regard to foreign exchange from international tourists. Unfortunatelly, those natural areas are protected areas which designated as such because of intrinsically unique, beautiful, high biodiversity, and ecologically fragile. The use  of these protected areas are limited to conserve is natural conditions. This paper emphasize the need of us to guard against this new concept of tourism, review of ecotourism concept from ecological perspective; the relationship between conservation management authority and regional otonomy.

Abstract

The issue of land in Lokapurna caused by the determination of the area became a national park but there are communities in Lokapurna before there was an expansion of the National Park. This study aims to measure and compare the perception among stakeholders in Lokapurna, Measure and compare important value land tenure in lokapurna, formulated the strategies of land tenure conflict resolution at Lokapurna. The land tenure conflict in Lokapurna is caused due to a difference in perception between community with a national park management. The community was not involved when the expansion of the area because national park management feel did not have authority to conduct the review prior to the Minister of forestry Decree No. 175 in 2003. There are four alternative strategies for conflict resolution of land tenure in the Lokapurna, moving out the community as a whole from national park (relocation), developing tourism in Lokapurna, optimizing Lokapurna as a special zone and performing collaborative cooperation between TNGHS management with the  community. Keywords: conflict, land tenure, National Park, perception, strategies

Abstract

ABSTRACTGunung Ciremai National Park (GCNP) is one of the conservation areas that has been facing forest land coverchanges due to uncontrolled activities of people around the area. They have been  practicing shifting cultivation system for horticulture that can lead to forestdegradation in GCNP area. The aim of this research was to analyzesocio-economic factors that influence expansion in GCNP. Data on sosio-economic were taken in GCNP for one month in August 2010. Collected attributed data including socio-economic conditions, knowledge and attitude of people. The results of image processing were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively using the attribute data to determine its impact on land cover changes. Socio-economic factors that influenced expansion of land cultivation into the park areas were rate of income in outside area, knowledge especially on cover function and attitude of people to the existing forest. To anticipate expansion of land cultivation into the forest area, the national park should create alternative beneficial projects in order to improve people income outside national park zone, rehabilitation of zone of national park and supervise the activities to people about national park. Keyword: socio-economic, expansion, national park

Abstract

The Strategic Plan of the Ministry of Forestry for the period of 2010-2014 has mandated the revitalization of 12 national parks to become Public Service Agencies.  It would allow national parks to be self-financed.  Unfortunately, efforts which have been made have not shown an encouraging progress yet.  This research aims : (1) to identify the elaboration of main tasks and functions of national park, (2) to analyze the accuracy of the implementation of the Public Service Agency to the national park management, and (3) to formulate implications for the implementation of Public Service Agency to the Sustainable Self Financed National Parks management. The result shows that the elaboration of 8 out of 10 main tasks and functions of national park provide goods and services to the public and its performance can be promoted through Public Service Agency, while the other 2 are identified as government liabilities. The implementation of Public Service Agency models for Self-Financed National Park Manegement both at KNPO dan BTS NGPO meets the requirement substantially and technically. Furthermore, the KNPO Cost Benefit Ratio projection of 6 main tasks and functions for the coming 5 years shows the feasibility.  It can be concluded that national park can be self-financed through the implementation of Public Service Agency scheme. Therefore, it is suggested that in order to implement self-financed national park through Public Service Agency scheme, business development must be included as one of the main tasks and functions and its organization structure and management must be adjusted. Keywords: self-financed national park, public service agency, bromo tengger semeru national park, komodo national park
