Abstract

Community-based conservation is a strategic approach to biodiversity conservation, especially in areas with strong social and cultural ties to natural resources. However, the effectiveness of collaborative governance within this approach is often not fully understood, particularly in relation to the dynamics of power relations and interdependence between actors. This study aims to analyze the roles, influences, and relationships among key actors in supporting the performance of sea turtle conservation programs at the Turtle Conservation and Education Center (TCEC) in Serangan, Bali. Using a mixed-method approach, this study combines MACTOR analysis to map the influence-dependence structure of eight key actors and quantitative descriptive analysis to assess management performance based on the perceptions of 30 respondents. The results show that Bandesa Adat Serangan has the highest influence as the holder of socio-cultural legitimacy, while TCEC Management is the most central actor with the highest level of dependence on multi-actor support. TCEC management performance is generally rated as Good to Very Good, with the highest scores for Sea Turtle Population Conservation (4.60) and Education (4.55). These findings confirm that synergy between customary institutions and formal managers is a key factor in the success of conservation governance. The resulting policy implications encourage the strengthening of community-based collaborative mechanisms in the design and implementation of sustainable coastal conservation programs.

Abstract

Research on social forestry governance in supporting sustainable forest management continues to grow along with increasing attention to the issues of deforestation, climate change, and empowerment of forest communities. However, this research development is still scattered across various themes, so an analysis is needed to map the structure of knowledge and the direction of the study's development comprehensively. This study aims to analyze publication trends, dominant themes, and the conceptual structure of research related to social forestry governance using a bibliometric approach. Research data was obtained from the Scopus database with a publication range of 2014–2024 using the keywords social forestry, community forestry, forest governance, and sustainable forest management. A total of 294 publications were analyzed using Bibliometrix, Biblioshiny, and VOSviewer software through co-occurrence analysis, thematic maps, and Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA). The results show that the trend of scientific publications has experienced a significant increase, especially after 2018. Dominant themes in the research include forest management, community forestry, forest governance, sustainability, ecosystem services, and conservation. The analysis also shows that social forestry research is developing in a multidisciplinary manner, focusing on collaborative governance, community participation, environmental sustainability, and institutional strengthening in forest management. Thus, social forestry governance plays a crucial role in supporting sustainable forest management through the integration of social, economic, and ecological aspects.

Abstract

Abstract. Anshor M, Basuni S, Arief H, Sunarminto T. 2023. Stakeholders and network analyses in Tambora National Park, Sumbawa Island, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 5446-5463. The complexity of managing Tambora National Park (Tambora NP), West Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia poses a challenge to be overcome effectively by Tambora NP Office alone, thus the involvement of broader stakeholders is needed. These stakeholders have their respective levels of influence and interests which affect the relationship between them and Tambora NP Office. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the stakeholders related to the management of Tambora NP, and investigate their interests and influence using social network analysis. A stakeholder analysis was conducted by the following steps: (i) identifying the stakeholders, (ii) mapping the stakeholders, and (iii) assessing the relationship among stakeholders. The analysis identified 38 stakeholders related to Tambora NP management. Tambora NP Office is the primary stakeholder with the highest level of influence and interest. The relationship established in the management network of Tambora NP is still weak and centralized among several stakeholders in which Tambora NP Office is the most central stakeholder. The relationship among stakeholders is dominated by five stakeholders, namely Tambora NP Office, Natural Resources Conservation Agency of West Nusa Tenggara (BKSDA NTB), Executive Board (DP) of Geopark Tambora, Forest Management Unit (KPH) Tambora and the Environment and Forestry Provincial Service of West Nusa Tenggara Province (Dinas LHK NTB). These five institutions also dominate the proximity between stakeholders, so the information flow is not evenly distributed to all stakeholders. The weak relationships among stakeholders could be overcome by enhancing the flow of information and communication which could be facilitated by Tambora NP Office, BKSDA NTB, and DP Geopark Tambora.

Abstract

Abstract. Lesmana Y, Basuni S, Soekmadi R. 2024. Ecosophy as a form of protection for the Tapanuli Orangutan (Pongo tapanuliensis) in the Batang Toru Landscape, North Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 25: 4535-4542. Forest clearing for economic development often conflicts with saving biodiversity. Forest clearing by humans to date has been anthropocentric in its utilization of forest resources, which are still classified as exploitative in the Batang Toru Landscape, South Tapanuli District, North Sumatra, Indonesia. As a result, the Tapanuli orangutan (Pongo tapanuliensis) become alienated in its own home and migrates to community gardens for get food. The community considers orangutans to be very cruel by stealing and destroying their plantation products, which results in a decrease in economic income, triggering human-orangutan conflict. Local communities carry out evictions in various ways based on their initiatives and experiences. This study aims to analyze the concept of ecosophy (ecological philosophy)and factors of human-orangutan conflict as an alternative conservation of wild and endangered species protection. The research location focused on six sub-districts of the Tapanuli orangutan range in the other-use forest area of South Tapanuli District. This research used qualitative methods through interviews and discussions with communities living around the forest. The results showed that the concept of ecosophy can integrate intellectual, spiritual, and emotional dimensions at all levels of education for public awareness of the importance of protecting the Tapanuli orangutan. Higher levels of education showed positive results towards saving the Tapanuli orangutan. This study suggests that a long-term solution to human-orangutan conflict requires a comprehensive approach that emphasizes the ecosophy between humans and nature.

Abstract

Watershed management in developing countries often faces persistent implementation gaps, despite the existence of sound environmental policies. This study investigates how stakeholder structure and coalition dynamics contribute to governance challenges in the Paguyaman Watershed, Gorontalo, Indonesia. Using a descriptive-exploratory approach, the MACTOR method was applied to analyze the relational structure among 15 key actors and 22 strategic objectives, based on a structured questionnaire, focus group discussions, and influence mapping. The results reveal a polarized stakeholder network divided into two coherent coalitions: a Government-Academic coalition oriented towards technocratic goals and a Civil Society coalition focused on socio-ecological justice. Divergence scores between the coalitions ranged from 0.81 to 0.87, indicating a high significant ideological conflict. Industry actors are found structurally isolated, with low convergence scores (<0.3), undermining collaborative efforts. The influence-dependence analysis identified four Driving Actors, seven Linking Actors, one Dependent Actor, and three Autonomous Actors. These imbalanced relational explain the failure of institutional coordination and the limited policy legitimacy. These findings emphasize that technical solutions alone are insufficient; effective watershed governance requires strategic interventions to bridge polarized coalition, engage isolated industry sectors, and strengthen coordinating actors to promote inclusive, and collaborative governance.
