Abstract

The constellations originating from Arab civilization were still very little known and studied. Al-Ṣūfi's book, al-Kawākib al-Thābitah, contains the record of coordinates, approximate magnitudes, and star details with graphs. This study examines the difference of stars in the sample constellation, compares the visual appearance of the illustrations on the Stellarium software, and studies the differences between the western constellations and the Arabic constellations. The result shows some differences between the constellations of the almagest and al-Kawākib al-Thābitah in the number of stars in the sample constellations, differences in illustrations from the orientalized figures, and the star magnitude in al-Ṣūfi's work that similar to Ptolemy's works. Al-Sufi identified a total of 134 additional stars, 65 stars located in the Northern constellations, 41 stars in the Zodiac constellation, and 28 stars in the Southern constellations. His observations showed that the magnitude values of 520 stars out of a total of 1022 stars were identical between al-Sufi and Ptolemy. Stellarium provides an excellent visual presentation of the Arabic constellations according to Al-Sufi's book that shows position, illustration, and mapping in the night sky.

Abstract

The technology used in hilal observation continues to develop. Most recently, using filters has become one of the options in hilal observation. Several filters can be used, ranging from low wavelengths like ultraviolet to high wavelengths like infrared. In some ideas, there needs to be a limit to the use of filters, the human eye's ability as a benchmark for the filter used. The human eye is sensitive to light with visual wavelengths, and one type of filter in this range is the LRGB filter. In this study, hilal observations were made on four filters and compared to find out which filter is better at increasing the contrast of hilal against the background. Using Michelson and Weber contrast as the definition of contrast to determine the comparison of the brightness value of the object with the background.  From the observations made, it is found that the R filter will produce higher contrast values at low altitudes, followed by the L, G, and B filters. However, at higher altitudes, the contrast values of the L and R filters are similar, while the G and B filters remain low.

Abstract

This study traces the spirit of tolerance of 5 Malay-Nusantara scholars about conception or early standards of dawn (Subuh). The five figures are Ahmad Khatib Minangkabau (d. 1334 H/1915 AD), Muhammad Mukhtar bin 'Atharid Bogor (d. 1349 H/1930 AD), Hasan bin Yahya Jambi (d. 1940 AD), and Muhammad Thahir Jalaluddin (d. 1376 H/1956 AD). Of the 5 figures, four of them set the standard of the beginning of Subuh time 19 degrees, while one figure namely Sheikh Muhammad Thahir Jalaluddin set 20 degrees. This 20-degree standard is commonly used by Muslims in the Southeast Asian region today. Eventhough they disagreed in some aspects, but they aprreciated the different methods they used, but they had the same goal

Abstract

Light pollution is a worldwide problem that affects fewer stars that can be seen at night. This study aims to measure the brightness of the sky in the zenith direction to minimize the effect of light pollution in observing celestial bodies. The research used the observation method of sky brightness level with SQM. Measurement of sky brightness was carried out in two places, namely in Medan and Serdang Bedagai. The SQM is mounted in a zenith direction and set to retrieve data every two seconds. Observations were made on November 10-13, 2018, during the new moon phase. The average value of sky brightness obtained in Medan is 18.05 mpsas and the NELM value is 4.00. Based on the Bortle scale, Medan is included in the ninth class area, namely the inner-city sky. Meanwhile, the average value of sky brightness obtained in Serdang Bedagai is 19.69 mpsas and the NELM value is 5.26. Based on the Bortle scale, Serdang Bedagai belongs to the sixth class area, namely bright suburban sky.

Abstract

Based on the results of observations and preliminary studies, it was found that students' ability to understand religious subjects at the Sungai Buloh Guidance Studio, Kuala Lumpur, was still low, this was evidenced by the process and learning outcomes. This activity is usually held once a week at the Sungai Buloh Guidance Studio. In the activity of conveying religious learning material, there were educators who delivered religious subjects using non-cooperative methods. It was found that when students received religious subject matter, there was a delay. Then there has been no maximum effort to use the cooperative method to increase students' understanding of religious subject matter by educators. The solution offered to the Sungai Buloh Guidance Center is to provide training to educators using the Sing A Song Method in delivering religious subject matter to students. The Sing A Song method is a way of teaching and introducing religious subject matter with a singing method that uses certain lyrics that are sung. Usually the lyrics of the songs are adjusted to the subject matter that will be taught to students which is done repeatedly in this training. Initially, educators were given the opportunity to make song lyrics adapted to the subject matter and then also adapted to the tunes of songs that were easy for students to memorize. Then educators practice how to deliver and teach directly to students, and later will be accompanied by mentors provided. After that an evaluation was carried out, by means of which the participants read one verse of the Koran, so that they could find out the level of understanding that had been achieved.

Abstract

Mosque plays a vital role in supporting the performance of prayer comfortably and solemnly. However, one of the most crucial elements in mosque construction is the accuracy of the qibla direction facing the Kaaba. In cities far from the Kaaba, such as Medan, determining the qibla direction cannot be done visually and requires precise astronomical calculations and technical approaches. The problem that arises is the continued presence of mosques with qibla directions deviating from the correct orientation, which can affect the quality of worship for Muslims. This study uses a specially reduced mosque Qibla measurement sample data in Medan city. This paper analyzes data from 38 mosque samples with Qibla direction errors, which were re-measured by the UMSU OIF team. The data were then processed using a frequency distribution method to provide an overview of the error distribution in mosque Qibla directions across the city of Medan. This study found that the error often seen is a deviation of 9-12 degrees from the Qibla direction, and the mistake factors. This study also found that the misalignment of Qibla directions in Medan is mainly due to prioritizing land efficiency over directional accuracy during mosque construction, as well as relying on general assumptions and previously heard fatwas rather than precise astronomical calculations.

Abstract

The use of robotic telescopes in the practice of observing the Hilal in Indonesia is quite widespread. One type of telescope that is widely used by observers is the iOptron Cube. Telescopes with an alt-azimuth mounting type with GPS features can be used easily by observers who observes Hilal on a portable basis. The effectiveness of using this telescope needs to be studied more deeply because pointing accuracy and alt-azimuth tracking mounting capabilities require good computational ability to obtain the expected results. After being tested with two configurations (narrow and wide field of view) and seeing the various supporting features embedded in this telescope, it can be concluded that the iOptron Cube is quite effective for observing Hilal.

Abstract

An analysis of light pollution has been carried out based on the reading of a photometercalled Sky Quality Meter (SQM) which shows the level of light pollution expressed in the MPASSreference. This study aims to determine the increase in light pollution in the city of Medan and to findout the implications for astronomical observations there. Light pollution distribution maps data andradiance quantity data are obtained through a platform that presents light pollution mapping and isfurther analyzed with literacy studies. Its Found that the radiance value is proportional to the level ofpollution and is influenced by the population of civilization in Medan from 2017 to 2022 soastronomical observations and phenomena are also decreasing to be visible.
