Abstract

As one of the English skills, writing should be developed well in the teaching-learning process. Writing needs to give continuously to the students because developing writing skills needs a process. It needs time. Shortly, having good writing skills can’t be reached spontaneously. How to write the idea is still a problem for some students even to develop their idea in a paragraph or an essay in writing class. So in this research, the researcher wants to know the students’ perceptions in their writing class. The researcher invited 31 students for participants to answer the survey. There were 13 questions to answer in the questionnaire. The questionnaire was about their opinion in writing class, their motivation in writing class, teaching-learning process in writing class, writing media, and paragraph genre. Generally, the result of the survey shows that they love writing, still have a good motivation in writing class, and wants to develop their writing skill better

Abstract

This study presents the description how to teach speaking through substitution drill technique. It uses qualitative description method. Speaking is as one of productive skills that needs to be improved. Through speaking, we can communicate each other and express our ideas. Even speaking is important in communication but learning how to speak fluently and correctly still seems to be difficult for students. Speaking still becomes a problem for the students at the class. There are some factors that make speaking becomes a problem to produce, for example lack of self confidence, lack of vocabularies and grammar knowledge. To answer this problem, the researcher suggests to use substitution drill technique at teaching speaking. Substitution drill is one of the techniques in speaking. In this technique, the researcher drilled the students by applying some key words in the model of the dialogue given. In this research, the researcher invited 14 students from the first semester of Bilingual Nursing Program in a private university in Banjarmasin as the subject of the research. The researcher did the research by observing the class activity, interviewed them and administering questionnaires to the subjects above.

Abstract

This research aims to determine what strategies students use Intensive English Class (IEC) non-English study programs to learn Listening skills. This research was conducted by asking 10 IEC students to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Data were collected through observation and interviews with five students with the highest TOEFL scores. Researchers conducted interviews based on six strategies in listening, which were divided into direct strategies (memory, cognitive, compensation) and indirect strategies (metacognitive, affective, and social). The result of this research is that some students use almost the same strategy in listening. Based on the results of the interviews, social strategies are more effective learning strategies used by students. Based on the results of the interviews, four students chose the social strategy, and one chose the memory strategy.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to delve into the emotional experiences of undergraduate English students, specifically focusing on their feelings of anxiety and nervousness. Furthermore, the study aimed to identify the various factors that contribute to these feelings among undergraduate English students while learning to speak English. This research was qualitative research conducted at a private university in Banjarmasin with four participants. In collecting the research data, researcher semi-structured interview techniques and the data were analysed using thematic inductive analysis. From the results of the research conducted, it was found that there were three undergraduate students who experienced dominant negative emotions during learning to speak English, while another student considered that negative emotions did not dominate him too much. There were two main factors that cause anxiety and nervousness, namely external factors (such as lack of confidence and the environment) and internal factors (such as lack of mastery of grammar and vocabulary)

Abstract

Nursing English is one of the branches of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) that require the instructors to take into account specific students’ learning needs. This is a Research and Development aimed: (1) to know the problems which are faced by the nursing students in studying English, (2) to develop nursing English materials by using simulation technique. There were 58 nurse students of the sixth semester at a private university in Indonesia invited to participate in the study. The data were garnered through questionnaires. Interviews were also conducted with students, teachers and subject specialist teachers. To enrich the data focus group discussions were carried out. The findings indicated that students’ speaking skill increased even though this method seemed challenging to them. Subject specialist teachers were familiar with this teaching technique since in the nursing field almost all the subjects need a simulation. This research contributes to the TESOL methodology and future research may expand the findings from another perspective.

Abstract

Teaching learning process mostly has used online method since Covid-19 pandemic. It happens also in language assessment. Language assessment must be given by online to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Giving online English Proficiency Test is one of the examples. HeadWay Test is as one of English Proficiency Tests designed to answer this needs. Actually, HeadWay Test has been used for language assessment since 2010. It was before this pandemic happens. This research is qualitative research. It describes teachers’ perception of the using of online HeadWay Test. It invited 58 English teachers from teacher association in South Kalimantan as the participants. In this case, they were given online HeadWay Test firstly. Then, the researcher gave them the questionnaires. There were 12 questions to answer in the questionnaire. The question asked about what their perception after they took online Headway Test. Generally, the result of this questionnaire showed that they have good perception of online HeadWay Test. They claimed that online HeadWay Test can be used as an alternative of online English Proficiency Test.

Abstract

This is classroom action research. The objective of this research is to find out the effectiveness of outlining in improving students’ paragraph writing skill for English Department Students, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, University of Muhammadiyah Banjarmasin. There are 6 students as the respondent of this research. The researcher took them as the respondent when they studied Writing 2 subject. The researcher got the data from the treatment in 2 cycles that were conducted in this research, the questionnaire that was distributed to the respondents above and also the observation during the cycles. The descriptive analysis in cycle 1 shows that the mean score is 71.3333, the minimum score is 63.00, the maximum score is 80.00 and the standard deviation is 5.85377. Meanwhile cycle 2 shows that the mean score is 76.6667, the minimum score is 70.00, the maximum score is 85.00 and the standard deviation is 5.16398. The research result explains that there is significant improvement in students’ paragraph writingskill by using outlining. The student’s paragraph writing skill is improved. Beside that the result of questionare and observation shows that outlining really works to improve students’ paragraph writing skill.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyse non-English teacher strategies in implementing Merdeka Curriculum at elementary school. The research was conducted for fourth-grade students at an elementary school in Banjarbaru. This research was a qualitative research method with case study approach, within classroom observation analysis and in-depth interview collecting data. The subjects of this research were a the fourth-grade teacher and the headmaster. The findings showed in the implementation of the strategies, the teacher did not make any differences both of Merdeka Curriculum and K13 Curriculum while teaching English. The findings also showed that the teacher used more than two strategies from the interview results. Beside of using discovery learning and cooperative learning as the teacher mentioned, most of the criteria that the teacher did in the classroom have several specific strategies such as expository learning, contextual teaching learning, and inquiry-based learning. Based on this result, both of Merdeka Curriculum and previous curriculum did not make any difference for the teacher to use the other strategies in the classroom. In fact, the teacher facing several obstacles while teaching Englsih in the classroom, such as the lack of english skill because did not have english background study, and the lack of understanding in the use of teaching strategies. The researcher suggested for being more aware of every strategy which use in the classroom and improving the english skill to make it easier while teaching English in the classroom.
