Abstract

Climate change causes an increase in waves and abrasion, damage to mangrove forests on the coast of Labu due to abrasion has an impact on the balance of coastal ecosystems. Mangrove forests function as breakwaters and abrasion resistance, spawning areas for marine life. This condition has an impact on the productivity of marine biota, the environment so that it will affect the community's economy. This community service aims to increase knowledge, skills and awareness of coastal communities in environmental management, especially mangrove conservation in overcoming abrasion, improving community values and changing behavior so that they can take an important role in climate change mitigation efforts. The method used is socialization, community development, mentoring and community organizing in environmental management through community service "Climate Change Mitigation through Real Actions of Restoration Generation for Mangroves on Pantai Labu". The expected target and outcome is the improvement of environmental quality, knowledge and skills of the community as coastal environmental managers. Publications in journals, videos and mass media, produce processed mangrove products as well as IPR drafts. Community service activities include planting mangroves on coastlines that have experienced heavy abrasion, maintaining and restoring coastal areas with coastal reforestation mitigation activities, processed food products from mangrove plants and the formation of youth organizations that care about the environment

Abstract

Bogak Village is a coastal village with a waste problem that can contribute to climate change. Instilling waste management knowledge needs to be done with the appropriate method. The purpose of the activity was to apply the Atteropoly game as an early education means regarding waste management for elementary school-age children in efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change in Bogak Village. The stages were planning and preparation (gathering information on partner problems and compiling educational game instruments), implementation of service activities, and monitoring evaluation. Educational activities through the Atteropoly game were directly carried out on July 6, 2022 to 30 participants of elementary school-age children and two teachers from the Rumah Qur’an Miftahul Jannah. Measuring the success of Atteropoly media used pre-test and post-test, it was found that there was an increase in participants’ knowledge and the average score of 38,33 (pre-test) to 53,00 (post-test). It can be concluded the Atteropoly game increases the elementary school-aged children’s knowledge in Bogak Village. The community service team also gave a set of Atteropoly game tools and segregated trash bins to the village. It is hoped that the Atteropoly game tool can be used to educate the public, especially elementary school-age children in Bogak Village.

Abstract

Health issues are a concern of the current government. Health issues are in line with the economic development that the government is aggressively prioritizing. This economic improvement certainly requires a variety of supporting infrastructure. One of them is road infrastructure. Adequate road infrastructure will certainly increase traffic activity. Traffic activity is one of the sources of heavy metal pollution in soil. The contents of motor vehicle emission gases is lead. Lead (Pb) is one of the metal elements that can cause poisoning in humans. This research is important to determine the concentration of soil which is an area of agricultural land that is overgrown with rice. This research was conducted to investigate lead concentration in roadside farmland soils according to roadside distance in the street of Lubuk Pakam – Medan km 32.  A total of 13 topsoils samples were collected with a distance of 0 m, 5 m, 20 m, 40 m, 50 m, 60 m, 80 m, 100 m, 120 m, 150 m, 200 m, 250 m, and 300 m from the roadside. The study found that the consentration  of lead in the soil was in the range of 2.33-11.40. There is no correlation of lead concentration  in soil with distance from highway  with r =0.093 and  p=0,762. The land farm lead-contaminated if used to grow crops that will be consumed is at risk of lead-contaminated Keyword: Lead concentration, Traffic activity, Pollution

Abstract

The number of dengue cases in Tebing Tinggi, North Sumatra province has fluctuated. The number of DHF cases in 2021 was 87 cases, then it was increase in 2022 to 175 cases. This number is still relatively high considering that the indicator for DHF morbidity is 20/100,000 population. Efforts to control the DHF vector have been carried out but have not been maximal in reducing cases. One House One The Larvae Observer Movement as the effort to optimizing Mosquito Nest Eradication (MNE) and 3M Plus in the Community has been carried out but determining the larvae free index (LFI) and larval density using a house survey requires time and The Larvae Observer's accuracy in seeing the type and presence of mosquitoes. Utilization of technology with digital images can address this imbalance in The Larvae Observer's tasks. LFI data can be directly reported along with a map of the location of the house with positive larvae so that time is more efficient and the presentation of information is more accurate. This study aims to determine the zoning of potential DHF areas using digital images technology in monitoring the presence of larvae. This type of research was an analytic survey with a cross-sectional design. The population of this study were all houses located in endemic areas, a sample of 500 houses representing 5 districts was taken by purposive sampling. Data collection uses the kobotoolbox which contains questions about the condition of the house, TPA and its type. Larvae application with digital image to identify the presence of larvae and map positive larvae houses. Spatial analysis was used to map the zoning for the presence of Aedes aegypti larvae and larvae free index (LFI), HI, CI and BI. The results showed that the maps of 5 sub-districts representing 5 sub-districts in the city of Tebing Tinggi, all of them have potential risks because LFI <95%, HI 13-35%, Ci 6.5 -13.4%, BI 20-50%, LFI 65-87% .

Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever, a disease caused by Aedes aegypti, can be prevented by reducing larval density using natural larvicides. This research aimed to investigate the natural larvicide effectiveness in reducing the Aedes aegypti larvae density in Medan City in 2023. This quasi-experimental research conducted a pre-test and post-test on the Container Index (CI). The population in this study was 1,057 houses in Ladang Bambu Village, the sample being 150 houses. The treatments were control and Ricinus communis-seed powder at 40 mg, 80 mg, 100 mg, and 120 mg/l doses in ovitraps, placed next to the water reservoir. Consider specifying the unit of measurement for the container index. The container index was calculated before (day 0) and after treatment (day 7). Data were analyzed using paired T-test, one-way ANOVA, and LSD. The results were that the modified ovitrap with the seed of Ricinus communis was effective in reducing the Aedes aegypti mosquito larvae density. The analysis showed a significant difference in the mean CI between the control and the modified ovitrap, the most effective dose in reducing CI being 100 mg/l of water. The community can use the 100 mg/l seed of Ricinus communis in ovitraps as an eco-friendly vector control.

Abstract

Nowadays, buying food from outside is one of the choices people make when busy. Satai is one of the culinary favorites of many people. Many people are not aware and do not know that the process of burning satai involving carbon materials in the form of charcoal can produce smoke containing carbon monoxide which is risky for buyers and sellers. The smoke produced from burning satai contains carbon monoxide, making satai sellers a profession that is very at risk of subjective respiratory complaints. A preliminary survey found that 6 out of 10 satai sellers in Duri City experienced subjective respiratory complaints due to smoke from burning satai. The purpose of this study was to analyze the exposure to carbon monoxide concentrations with subjective respiratory problems among satai sellers. This research uses a cross-sectional approach. Sampling was utilized using a research sample of 40 respondents. The study found that the variables associated with subjective respiratory complaints were carbon monoxide concentration (p=0.010) and work period (p= 0.023). The unrelated variables are body mass index (p= 0.412), length of exposure (p= 0.182), and smoking behavior (p= 0.608). The recommendation offered to satai vendors is to get used to using Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), take out lung health checks, implement shifting tasks, eat lots of drinking water, and pay attention to working hours and the distance between the seller and the satai burning location.

Abstract

The high cases of DHF highlights the importance of identifying factors that contribute to the breeding of mosquito larvae. This study aims to examine the relationship between environmental conditions and human behavior related to the presence of Aedes spp larvae. A quantitative research method with an analytical approach and a cross-sectional design was used. The sample consisted of 150 households in the Baru Ladang Bambu Subdistrict, Medan Tuntungan District, Medan City. The results indicate that the habit of hanging clothes is significantly associated with the presence of Aedes larvae (p-value = 0.010). Other variables such as house type, occupancy density, ventilation, wire screens, opening ventilation, clutter, closing and draining landfills, burying used items, using abate powder, keeping larva-eating fish, and receiving fogging showed no significant relationship. In conclusion, the main risk factor identified is the indoor practice of hanging clothes. Based on these findings, it is recommended that mosquito control programs be enhanced through educational efforts, focusing on changing community behavior particularly discouraging the habit of hanging clothes indoors—as a preventive measure to reduce the presence of Aedes spp larvae.
